Israel's Complaint

11 O God, we have heard with our ears, Our fathers have told us The work that You did in their days, In the days of old.

11 {To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil.} We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.

11 God, we have heard with our ears- our forefathers have told us- the work You accomplished in their days, in days long ago:

11 God, we heard it with our ears; our ancestors told us about what you did in their day a long time ago.

11 We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us [what] work You did in their days, in the days of old.

22 You with Your own hand drove out the nations; Then You planted them; You afflicted the peoples, Then You spread them abroad.

22 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

22 to plant them, You drove out the nations with Your hand; to settle them, You crushed the peoples.

22 With your hand you expelled the nations and established our ancestors. You afflicted nations and cast them out.

22 You drove out the nations with Your hand and it was Your power that gave [Israel] a home by rooting out the [heathen] peoples, but [Israel] You spread out.

33 For by their own sword they did not possess the land, And their own arm did not save them, But Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, For You favored them.

33 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

33 For they did not take the land by their sword- their arm did not bring them victory- but by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You were pleased with them.

33 It was not with their sword that they inherited the land, nor did their own arm deliver them. But it was by your power, your strength, and by the light of your face; because you were pleased with them.

33 For they got not the land [of Canaan] in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them; but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your countenance [did it], because You were favorable toward and did delight in them.

44 You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob.

44 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.

44 You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob.

44 You are my king, God, command victories for Jacob.

44 You are my King, O God; command victories and deliverance for Jacob (Israel).

55 Through You we will push back our adversaries; Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us.

55 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

55 Through You we drive back our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies.

55 Through you we will knock down our oppressors; through your name we will tread down those who rise up against us.

55 Through You shall we push down our enemies; through Your name shall we tread them under who rise up against us.

66 For I will not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me.

66 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

66 For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory.

66 For I place no confidence in my bow, nor will my sword deliver me.

66 For I will not trust in and lean on my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

77 But You have saved us from our adversaries, And You have put to shame those who hate us.

77 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

77 But You give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced.

77 For you delivered us from our oppressors and put to shame those who hate us.

77 But You have saved us from our foes and have put them to shame who hate us.

88 In God we have boasted all day long, And we will give thanks to Your name forever. Selah.

88 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

88 We boast in God all day long; we will praise Your name forever. Selah

88 We will praise God all day long; and to your name we will give thanks forever. Interlude

88 In God we have made our boast all the day long, and we will give thanks to Your name forever. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

99 Yet You have rejected us and brought us to dishonor, And do not go out with our armies.

99 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.

99 But You have rejected and humiliated us; You do not march out with our armies.

99 However, you cast us off and made us ashamed! You did not even march with our armies!

99 But now You have cast us off and brought us to dishonor, and You go not out with our armies.

1010 You cause us to turn back from the adversary; And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves.

1010 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.

1010 You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves.

1010 You made us retreat from our oppressors. Our enemies ransacked us.

1010 You make us to turn back from the enemy, and they who hate us take spoil for themselves.

1111 You give us as sheep to be eaten And have scattered us among the nations.

1111 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.

1111 You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations.

1111 You handed us over to be slaughtered like sheep and you scattered us among the nations.

1111 You have made us like sheep intended for mutton and have scattered us in exile among the nations.

1212 You sell Your people cheaply, And have not profited by their sale.

1212 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.

1212 You sell Your people for nothing; You make no profit from selling them.

1212 You sold out your people for nothing, and made no profit at that price.

1212 You sell Your people for nothing, and have not increased Your wealth by their price.

1313 You make us a reproach to our neighbors, A scoffing and a derision to those around us.

1313 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

1313 You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us.

1313 You made us a laughing stock to our neighbors, a source of mockery and derision to those around us.

1313 You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, a scoffing and a derision to those who are round about us.

1414 You make us a byword among the nations, A laughingstock among the peoples.

1414 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

1414 You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.

1414 You made us an object lesson among the nations; people shake their heads at us.

1414 You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the heads among the people.

1515 All day long my dishonor is before me And my humiliation has overwhelmed me,

1515 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

1515 My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face,

1515 My dishonor tortures me continuously; the shame on my face overwhelms me

1515 My dishonor is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face

1616 Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger.

1616 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.

1616 because of the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger.

1616 because of the voice of the one who mocks and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger.

1616 At the words of the taunter and reviler, by reason of the enemy and the revengeful.

1717 All this has come upon us, but we have not forgotten You, And we have not dealt falsely with Your covenant.

1717 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

1717 All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant.

1717 All this came upon us, yet we did not forsake you, and we have not dealt falsely with your covenant;

1717 All this is come upon us, yet have we not forgotten You, neither have we been false to Your covenant [which You made with our fathers].

1818 Our heart has not turned back, And our steps have not deviated from Your way,

1818 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;

1818 Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path.

1818 Our hearts have not turned away; our steps have not swerved from your path.

1818 Our hearts are not turned back, neither have our steps declined from Your path,

1919 Yet You have crushed us in a place of jackals And covered us with the shadow of death.

1919 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

1919 But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness.

1919 Nevertheless, you crushed us in the lair of jackals, and covered us in deep darkness.

1919 Though You have distressingly broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with deep darkness, even with the shadow of death.

2020 If we had forgotten the name of our God Or extended our hands to a strange god,

2020 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

2020 If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god,

2020 If we had forgotten the name of our God or lifted our hands to a foreign god,

2020 If we had forgotten the name of our God or stretched out our hands to a strange god,

2121 Would not God find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

2121 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

2121 wouldn't God have found this out, since He knows the secrets of the heart?

2121 wouldn't God find out since he knows the secrets of the heart?

2121 Would not God discover this? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

2222 But for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

2222 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

2222 Because of You we are slain all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered.

2222 For your sake we are being killed all day long. We are thought of as sheep to be slaughtered.

2222 No, but for Your sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

2323 Arouse Yourself, why do You sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not reject us forever.

2323 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

2323 Wake up, Lord! Why are You sleeping? Get up! Don't reject us forever!

2323 Wake up! Why are you asleep, Lord? Get up! Don't cast us off forever!

2323 Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arouse Yourself, cast us not off forever!

2424 Why do You hide Your face And forget our affliction and our oppression?

2424 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

2424 Why do You hide Yourself and forget our affliction and oppression?

2424 Why are you hiding your face? Why are you ignoring our affliction and oppression?

2424 Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and our oppression?

2525 For our soul has sunk down into the dust; Our body cleaves to the earth.

2525 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

2525 For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.

2525 For we have collapsed in the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.

2525 For our lives are bowed down to the dust; our bodies cleave to the ground.

2626 Rise up, be our help, And redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness.

2626 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.

2626 Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of Your faithful love.

2626 Arise! Deliver us! Redeem us according to your gracious love! To the Director: An instruction by the Sons of Korah. A love song to the tune of "Lilies".

2626 Rise up! Come to our help, and deliver us for Your mercy's sake and because of Your steadfast love!
