1 God, do not rest! Don't be silent! Don't stay inactive, God!

1 {A Song or Psalm of Asaph.} Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.

2 See! Your enemies rage; those who hate you issue threats.

2 For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.

2 For behold, Your enemies (C)make an uproar,And (D)those who hate You have (a)(E)exalted themselves.

2 See how Your enemies make an uproar;those who hate You have acted arrogantly.(a)(C)

2 For behold, Your enemies are in tumult,And those who hate You have raised their heads [in hatred of You].(A)

3 They plot against your people and conspire against your cherished ones.

3 They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.

3 They (F)make shrewd plans against Your people,And (b)conspire together against (G)Your (c)treasured ones.

3 They devise clever schemes against Your people;they conspire against Your treasured ones.(D)

3 They concoct crafty schemes against Your people,And conspire together against Your hidden and precious ones.

4 They say, "Let us go and erase them as a nation so the name of Israel will not be remembered anymore."

4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

4 They have said, “Come, and (H)let us wipe them out (d)as a nation,That the (I)name of Israel be remembered no more.”

4 They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nationso that Israel’s name will no longer be remembered.”(E)

5 Indeed, they shrewdly planned together, forming an alliance against you

5 For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:

8 Even Assyria joined them to strengthen the descendants of Lot. Interlude

9 Deal with them as you did to Midian, Sisera, and Jabin at the Kishon Brook.

9 Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison:

10 They were destroyed at En-dor and became as dung on the ground.

11 Punish their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,

12 who said, "Let us possess the pastures of God."

12 Who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession.

13 God, set them up like dried thistles, like straw before the wind.

13 O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind.

13 O my God, make them like the (h)(AC)whirling dust,Like (AD)chaff before the wind.

13 Make them like tumbleweed, my God,like straw before the wind.(R)

13 O my God, make them like (a)whirling dust,Like chaff before the wind [worthless and without substance].

14 Like a fire burning a forest, and a flame setting mountains ablaze.

14 As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire;

14 Like (AE)fire that burns the forestAnd like a flame that (AF)sets the mountains on fire,

14 As fire burns a forest,as a flame blazes through mountains,(S)

14 Like fire consumes the forest,And like the flame sets the mountains on fire,

15 Pursue them with your storm and terrify them with your whirlwind.

15 So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm.

16 Fill their faces with shame until they seek your name, God.

17 Let them be humiliated and terrified permanently until they die in shame.

17 Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:

18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
