Eternal God And Mortal Man

1 BOOK IV(Psalms 90–106)A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, You have been our refuge(a)in every generation.(A)

1 A Prayer of (a)Moses, the man of God.Lord, You have been our (b)(A)dwelling place in all generations.

1 {A Prayer of Moses the man of God.} Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.

1 Lord, you've been our refuge from generation to generation.

1 Lord, You have been our dwelling place [our refuge, our sanctuary, our stability] in all generations.

2 Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, You are God.(B)

2 Before (B)the mountains were born(c)Or You (C)gave birth to the earth and the world,Even (D)from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

2 Before the mountains were formed or the earth and the world were brought forth, you are God from eternity to eternity.

2 Before the mountains were bornOr before You had given birth to the earth and the world,Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are [the eternal] God.

3 You return mankind to the dust, saying, “Return, descendants of Adam.”(C)

3 You (E)turn man back into dustAnd say, “Return, O children of men.”

3 Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.

3 You return people to dust merely by saying, "Return, you mortals!"

3 You turn man back to dust,And say, “Return [to the earth], O children of [mortal] men!”

4 For in Your sight a thousand yearsare like yesterday that passes by,like a few hours of the night.(D)

4 For (F)a thousand years in Your sightAre like (G)yesterday when it passes by,(d)Or as a (H)watch in the night.

4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

4 One thousand years in your sight are but a single day that passes by, just like a night watch.

4 For a (a)thousand years in Your sightAre like yesterday when it is past,Or as a watch in the night.(A)

5 You end their lives;(b) they sleep.(E)They are like grass that grows in the morning—

5 You (I)have (e)swept them away like a flood, they (f)(J)fall asleep; In the morning they are like (K)grass which (g)sprouts anew.

5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

5 You will sweep them away while they are asleep by morning they are like growing grass.

5 You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep [forgotten as soon as they are gone];In the morning they are like grass which grows anew—

6 in the morning it sprouts and grows;by evening it withers and dries up.(F)

6 In the morning it (L)flourishes and (h)sprouts anew;Toward evening it (M)fades and (N)withers away.

6 In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

6 In the morning it blossoms and is renewed, but toward evening, it fades and withers.

6 In the morning it flourishes and springs up;In the evening it wilts and withers away.

7 For we are consumed by Your anger;we are terrified by Your wrath.(G)

7 For we have been (O)consumed by Your angerAnd by Your wrath we have been (i)dismayed.

7 For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.

7 Indeed, we are consumed by your anger and terrified by your wrath.

7 For we have been consumed by Your angerAnd by Your wrath we have been terrified.

8 You have set our unjust ways before You,our secret sins in the light of Your presence.(H)

8 You have (P)placed our iniquities before You,Our (Q)secret sins in the light of Your presence.

8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

8 You have set our iniquities before you, what we have concealed in the light of your presence.

8 You have placed our wickedness before you,Our secret sins [which we tried to conceal, You have placed] in the [revealing] light of Your presence.

9 For all our days ebb away under Your wrath;we end our years like a sigh.(I)

9 For (R)all our days have declined in Your fury;We have finished our years like a (j)sigh.

9 For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.

9 All our days pass away in your wrath; our years fade away and end like a sigh.

9 For all our days pass away in Your wrath; We have finished our years like a whispered sigh.(B)

10 Our lives last(c) seventy yearsor, if we are strong, eighty years.Even the best of them are(d) struggle and sorrow;indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away.(J)

10 As for the days of our (k)life, (l)they contain seventy years,Or if due to strength, (S)eighty years,Yet their pride is but (T)labor and sorrow; For soon it is gone and we (U)fly away.

10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

10 We live for 70 years, or 80 years if we're healthy, yet even in the prime years there are troubles and sorrow. They pass by quickly and we fly away.

10 The days of our life are (b)seventy years—Or even, if because of strength, eighty years;Yet their pride [in additional years] is only labor and sorrow,For it is soon gone and we fly away.

11 Who understands the power of Your anger?Your wrath matches the fear that is due You.(K)

11 Who (m)understands the (V)power of Your angerAnd Your fury, according to the (W)fear (n)that is due You?

11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.

11 Who can know the intensity of your anger? Because our fear of you matches your wrath,

11 Who understands the power of Your anger? [Who connects this brevity of life among us with Your judgment of sin?]And Your wrath, [who connects it] with the [reverent] fear that is due You?

12 Teach us to number our days carefullyso that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.(e)(L)

12 So (X)teach us to number our days,That we may (o)(Y)present to You a heart of wisdom.

12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

12 teach us to keep account of our days so we may develop inner wisdom.

12 So teach us to number our days,That we may cultivate and bring to You a heart of wisdom.

13 Lord—how long?Turn and have compassion on Your servants.(M)

13 Do (Z)return, O Lord; (AA)how long will it be?And (p)be (AB)sorry for Your servants.

13 Return, O LORD, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants.

13 Please return, LORD! When will it be? Comfort your servants.

13 Turn, O Lord [from Your fierce anger]; how long will it be?Be compassionate toward Your servants—revoke Your sentence.

14 Satisfy us in the morning with Your faithful loveso that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days.(N)

14 O (AC)satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness,That we may (AD)sing for joy and be glad all our days.

14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

14 Satisfy us in the morning with your gracious love so we may sing for joy and rejoice every day.

14 O satisfy us with Your lovingkindness in the morning [now, before we grow older],That we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

15 Make us rejoice for as many days as You have humbled us,for as many years as we have seen adversity.(O)

15 (AE)Make us glad (q)according to the days You have afflicted us,And the (AF)years we have seen (r)evil.

15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.

15 Cause us to rejoice throughout the time when you have afflicted us, the years when we have known trouble.

15 Make us glad in proportion to the days You have afflicted us,And the years we have suffered evil.

16 Let Your work be seen by Your servants, and Your splendor by their children.(P)

16 Let Your (AG)work appear to Your servantsAnd Your (AH)majesty (s)to their children.

16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.

16 May your awesome deeds be revealed to your servants, as well as your splendor to their children.

16 Let Your work [the signs of Your power] be revealed to Your servantsAnd Your [glorious] majesty to their children.

17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us;establish for us the work of our hands—establish the work of our hands!(Q)

17 Let the (AI)favor of the Lord our God be upon us;And (t)(AJ)confirm for us the work of our hands;Yes, (u)confirm the work of our hands.

17 And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

17 May your favor be on us, Lord our God; make our endeavors successful; yes, make our endeavors secure! A Davidic Psalm

17 And let the [gracious] favor of the Lord our God be on us;Confirm for us the work of our hands—Yes, confirm the work of our hands.
