Greeting
1 Paul, a slave of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to arouse faith in those whom God has chosen, and the comprehension of religious truth,

3 and revealed at the proper time in his message, through the preaching with which I have been intrusted at the command of God our Savior,

Instructions To Titus In Crete
5 I left you behind in Crete expressly to correct what defects there were, and to appoint elders in each town, as I directed you??6 men of irreproachable character, who have been married only once, whose children are Christians, free from any suspicion of profligacy or disobedience.
5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

5 The reason I left you in Crete(Q) was to set right what was left undone and, as I directed you, to appoint elders(R) in every town:

6 For as God's overseer a superintendent must be irreproachable, not arrogant or quick-tempered or given to drink or pugnacious or addicted to dishonest gain,
6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
6 namely, (W)if any man is above reproach, the (X)husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of (Y)dissipation or (Z)rebellion.

6 An elder must be blameless. He must be the husband of one wife and have children who are believers and who are not accused of having wild lifestyles or of being rebellious.
7 but hospitable, a lover of goodness, sensible, upright, of holy life, self-controlled,
7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
7 For the (d)(AA)overseer must be above reproach as (AB)God’s steward, not (AC)self-willed, not quick-tempered, not (AD)addicted to wine, not pugnacious, (AE)not fond of sordid gain,
7 For an overseer,(U) as God’s administrator, must be blameless, not arrogant, not hot-tempered, not addicted to wine, not a bully, not greedy for money,
7 Because an overseer is God's servant manager, he must be blameless. He must not be arrogant or irritable. He must not drink too much, be a violent person, or make money in shameful ways.
8 standing by the message that can be relied on, just as he was taught it, so that he may be qualified both to encourage others with wholesome teaching and to show the error of those who oppose him.
8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, righteous, holy, self-controlled,
8 Instead, he must be hospitable to strangers, must appreciate what is good, and be sensible, honest, moral, and self-controlled.
Correct Whoever Teaches What Is Wrong
9 For there are many undisciplined people, who deceive themselves with their empty talk, especially those of the party of circumcision.
9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
9 (AH)holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in (AI)sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
9 holding to the faithful message as taught,(V) so that he will be able both to encourage with sound teaching(W) and to refute those who contradict it.
9 He must be devoted to the trustworthy message that agrees with what we teach, so that he may be able to encourage others with healthy doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
10 They must be silenced, for such men upset whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach, for the sake of dishonest gain.
10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
10 (AJ)For there are many (AK)rebellious men, (AL)empty talkers and deceivers, especially (AM)those of the circumcision,
10 For there are also many rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially those from Judaism.(d)
10 For there are many people who are rebellious, especially those who are converts from Judaism. They speak utter nonsense and deceive people.
11 It was a Cretan, a prophet of their own, who said, "Cretans are always liars, savage brutes, lazy gluttons,"
11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.
11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting (AN)whole families, teaching (AO)things they should not teach (AP)for the sake of sordid gain.
11 It is necessary to silence them; they overthrow whole households by teaching what they shouldn’t in order to get money dishonestly.
11 They must be silenced, because they are the kind of people who ruin whole families by teaching what they should not teach in order to make money in a shameful way.
12 and that statement is true. Therefore correct them rigorously, to make them have a healthy faith,
12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

12 One of their very own prophets said, "Liars ever, men of Crete, savage brutes that live to eat."
13 and not study Jewish fictions or commands given by men who reject the truth.
13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

14 To the pure everything is pure, but to the evil-minded and unbelieving nothing is pure, but their very minds and consciences are unclean.

14 and not pay attention to Jewish myths or commands given by people who reject the truth.
15 They profess to know God, but they disown him by what they do; they are detestable, disobedient men, worthless for any good purpose.
15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
15 (AX)To the pure, all things are pure; but (AY)to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their (AZ)mind and their conscience are defiled.
15 To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience(AB) are defiled.
15 Everything is clean to those who are clean, but nothing is clean to those who are corrupt and unbelieving. Indeed, their very way of thinking and their consciences have been corrupted.
