1 Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired;
1 "Gather together! Yes, indeed, gather together, you shameless nation!
1 Collect your thoughts, yes, unbend yourselves [in submission and see if there is no sense of shame and no consciousness of sin left in you], O shameless nation [not desirous or desired]!
2 Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD'S anger come upon you.
2 Before the decree is carried out, before the day flies away like chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD visits you, before the Day of the LORD's wrath surprises you,
2 [The time for repentance is speeding by like chaff whirled before the wind!] Therefore consider, before God's decree brings forth [the curse upon you], before the time [to repent] is gone like the drifting chaff, before the fierce anger of the Lord comes upon you -- "yes, before the day of the wrath of the Lord comes upon you!
3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD'S anger.
3 seek the LORD, all you humble people of the land, who do what he commands. Seek righteousness! Seek humility! Maybe you will be protected in the Day of the LORD's anger."
3 Seek the Lord [inquire for Him, inquire of Him, and require Him as the foremost necessity of your life], all you humble of the land who have acted in compliance with His revealed will and have kept His commandments; seek righteousness, seek humility [inquire for them, require them as vital]. It may be you will be hidden in the day of the Lord's anger.

4 "For Gaza will be forsaken, and Ashkelon deserted Ashdod will be emptied at high noon; even Ekron will be uprooted.
4 For [hear the fate of the Philistines:] Gaza shall be forsaken and Ashkelon shall become a desolation; the people of Ashdod shall be driven out at noonday and Ekron shall be uprooted.

6 The seacoast will become pasturelandswith caves for shepherds and folds for sheep.

8 I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border.
8 "I've heard Moab's insults and the curses from those Ammonites by which they defame my people and boast about their territory.
8 I have heard the taunts of Moab and the revilings of the Ammonites by which they have reproached My people, and magnified themselves and made boasts against their territory.
9 “Therefore, as I live,” declares the Lord of hosts,The God of Israel,“Surely (Z)Moab will be like (AA)SodomAnd the sons of (AB)Ammon like (AC)Gomorrah—A place possessed by nettles and salt pits,And a perpetual desolation. The remnant of My people will (AD)plunder themAnd the remainder of My nation will inherit them.”
9 Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.
9 Therefore, as I live—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel—Moab will be like Sodomand the Ammonites like Gomorrah(H)—a place overgrown with weeds,a salt pit, and a perpetual wasteland. The remnant of My people will plunder them;the remainder of My nation will dispossess them.
9 Therefore as I'm alive and living," declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel, "Moab will surely become like Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a place overrun by weeds and salty marshes, unpopulated forever. The survivors of my people will confiscate their property, and those who remain of my nation will inherit what was theirs.
9 Therefore, as I live, says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Moab shall become like Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a land possessed by nettles and wild vetches and salt pits, and a perpetual desolation. The remnant of My people shall make a prey of them and what is left of My nation shall possess them.
10 This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts.
10 This they will have in lieu of their pride, because they have insulted and mocked the people of the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.
10 This shall they have for their pride, because they have taunted and boasted against the people of the Lord of hosts.
11 The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.
11 The Lord will be terrifying to themwhen He starves all the gods of the earth. Then all the distant coastlands of the nationswill bow in worship to Him,each in its own place.
11 The LORD will incite them to terror, because he will cause all the gods of the earth to waste away. They will worship him, every person in his own home, including even the coastlands of the nations."
11 The Lord will be terrible to them, for He will make lean and famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship Him, every one from his place, even all the isles and coastlands of the nations.
13 And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness.
13 "And the LORD will attack the north, destroying Assyria. He will turn Nineveh into a desolate ruin, as dry as a desert wilderness.
13 And [the Lord] will stretch out His hand against the north and destroy Assyria and will make Nineveh a desolation, dry as the desert.
14 Flocks will lie down in her midst,(m)All beasts which range in herds; Both the (n)(AO)pelican and the hedgehogWill lodge in (o)the tops of her pillars;(p)Birds will sing in the window,Desolation will be on the threshold; For He has laid bare the cedar work.
14 And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work.
14 Herds will lie down in the middle of it,every kind of wild animal.(c)Both the desert owl(d) and the screech owl(e)will roost in the capitals of its pillars.Their calls will sound(f) from the window, but devastation(g) will be on the threshold, for He will expose the cedar work.(h)
14 Flocks will lie down in her midst, along with animals of every kind. Desert owls and screeching owls will nest at the top of the pillars, hooting through the vacant windows, "Ruin sits at these doorsills,' for he will expose even the cedar framework.
14 Herds shall lie down in the midst of [Nineveh], all the [wild] beasts of the nations and of every kind; both the pelican and the hedgehog shall lodge on the upper part of her [fallen] pillars; the voice [of the nesting bird] shall sing in the windows; desolation and drought shall be on the thresholds, for her cedar paneling will He lay bare.
15 This is the (AP)exultant cityWhich (AQ)dwells securely,Who says in her heart,“(AR)I am, and there is no one besides me.”How she has become a (AS)desolation,A resting place for beasts!(AT)Everyone who passes by her will hissAnd wave his hand in contempt.
15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.
15 This is the self-assured(L) citythat lives in security, that thinks to herself:I exist, and there is no one else. What a desolation she has become,a place for wild animals to lie down!Everyone who passes by herjeers(i) and shakes his fist.
15 This is that carefree city that lived irresponsibly, that told herself, "Me first!' and, "There will be no one else!' How ruined she has become a habitat for wild animals! Everyone who passes by her will sneer at her and make obscene gestures!"
15 This is the joyous and exultant city that dwelt carelessly [feeling so secure], that said in her heart, I am and there is none beside me. What a desolation she has become, a lair for [wild] beasts! Everyone who passes by her shall hiss and wave his hand [indicating his gratification].
