1 Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city!
1 Woe to this filthy, polluted, and oppressive city!
1 Woe (judgment is coming) to her who is rebellious and defiled,The tyrannical city [Jerusalem]!
2 She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the LORD; she drew not near to her God.
2 It won't obey anyone. It won't accept discipline. It does not trust in the LORD. It does not approach God.
2 She did not listen and heed the voice [of God];She accepted no correction. She did not trust in the Lord [but trusted her own power];She did not draw near to her God [but to the pagan gods of Baal or Molech].
3 Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.
3 Its national officials are roaring lions; its judges are like wolves of the night that don't leave the bones for the morning.
3 Her officials within her are roaring lions; Her judges are [as hungry as] the wolves at evening,They leave nothing for the morning.
4 Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.
4 Its prophets are arrogant and treacherous. Its priests have contaminated the sanctuary. They give perverse interpretations of the Law.
5 The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.
5 The righteous LORD who lives within her will do no wrong; he will bring justice to light morning by morning. He never fails, but the unjust are shameless.
5 The Lord is righteous within her;He will do no injustice.Every morning He brings His justice to light; He does not fail. But the unjust person knows no shame.
6 I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant.
6 "I have destroyed nations their fortifications are deserted. I have turned their main thoroughfares into wastelands where no one will travel. Their cities are desolate; as a result, not one man remains no, not even a single resident.
6 “I [the Lord] have cut off and destroyed nations [as a warning to Judah];Their corner towers (battlements) are in ruins.I have made their streets desolateSo that no one passes by;Their cities are destroyedSo that there is no man, there is no inhabitant.
7 “I said, ‘Surely you will revere Me,(T)Accept instruction.’So her dwelling will (U)not be cut offAccording to all that I have appointed concerning her.But they were eager to (V)corrupt all their deeds.
7 I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.
7 I thought: You will certainly fear Meand accept correction. Then her dwelling place(d)would not be cut offbased on all that I had allocated to her. However, they became more corruptin all their actions.
7 I have said, "If only you would fear me, if only you would take my instructions to heart.' Then their houses would not have been torn down. I have chastened them, but they were eager to corrupt everything they were doing."
8 “Therefore (W)wait for Me,” declares the Lord,“For the day when I rise up as a witness.Indeed, My decision is to (X)gather nations,To assemble kingdoms,To pour out on them My indignation,All My burning anger; For (Y)all the earth will be devouredBy the fire of My zeal.
8 Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.
8 Therefore, wait for Me(O)—this is the Lord’s declaration—until the day I rise up for plunder.(e)For My decision is to gather nations,to assemble kingdoms,in order to pour out My indignation(P) on them, all My burning anger;for the whole earth will be consumedby the fire of My jealousy.(Q)
8 "Just you wait!" declares the LORD. "The day will come when I stand up as a prosecutor, for I am determined to assemble the nations and to gather the kingdoms, in order to pour out my indignation upon them all of my fierce anger. All the earth will be consumed by the fire of my jealousy.
8 “Therefore [you of the godly remnant of Judah, patiently] wait for Me,” declares the Lord,“[Wait] for the day when I rise up as a witness [against the nations].For it is My decision and My right to gather the nations,To assemble kingdoms,To pour out on them My indignation,All [the heat of] My burning anger; For [in that day] all the earth shall be consumedBy the fire of My zeal.
9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.
9 Indeed, then I will return my people to a pure language so that they all may call upon the name of the LORD, serving him with a united will.
9 “Then I will give to the peoples [clear and pure speech from] purified lips [which reflect their purified hearts],That all of them may call on the name of the Lord,To serve Him shoulder to shoulder (united).
10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering.
10 "From beyond the rivers of Sudan my worshipers including my dispersed people will present offerings to me.
10 “From beyond the rivers of EthiopiaMy worshipers, [the descendants of] My dispersed ones,Will bring My offerings.
11 “In that day you will (AD)feel no shameBecause of all your deedsBy which you have rebelled against Me;For then I will remove from your midstYour (AE)proud, exulting ones,And you will never again be haughtyOn My (AF)holy mountain.
11 In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.
11 On that day you(g) will not be put to shame(T)because of everything you have donein rebelling(U) against Me.For then I will removeyour proud,(V) arrogant people from among you,and you will never again be haughtyon My holy mountain.(W)
11 When this happens, you will not be ashamed of your actions by which you sinned against me, because I will remove from among you those who revel in pride. Arrogance will have no place in my holy mountain.
11 “On that day you [Israel] will feel no shameBecause of all your actsBy which you have rebelled and sinned against Me;Then I will remove from among youYour rejoicing ones who delight in their pride; And you will never again behave arrogantlyOn My holy mountain [Mount Zion].
12 I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the LORD.
12 I will keep a humble and gentle people among you, and they will trust in the name of the LORD.
12 “But I will leave among youA humble and lowly people,And they will take refuge and trust confidently in the name of the Lord.
13 The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
13 The survivors of Israel will not practice lawlessness nor tell lies, nor will a deceitful message be found in their mouths, because they will eat and rest, with no one to cause fear."
13 “The remnant of Israel will do no wrongNor speak lies,Nor will a deceitful tongueBe found in their mouths; For they will eat and lie downWith no one to make them tremble and feel afraid.”

14 Sing for joy, Daughter Zion;shout loudly, Israel!Be glad and rejoice with all your heart,Daughter Jerusalem!
14 "Sing aloud, daughter of Zion! Shout out, Israel! Rejoice with all of your heart, daughter of Jerusalem!
14 Shout for joy, O Daughter of Zion!Shout in triumph, O Israel!Rejoice, be in high spirits and glory with all your heart,O Daughter of Jerusalem [in that day]!
15 The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.
15 The Lord has removed your punishment; He has turned back your enemy. The King of Israel, Yahweh, is among you;you need no longer fear harm.
15 The LORD has acquitted you; turning back your adversaries. Israel's king, the LORD, is among you; you will not fear disaster anymore.
15 The Lord has taken away the judgments against you;He has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, even the Lord [Himself], is in your midst; You will no longer fear disaster.
16 In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.
16 "When all of this happens, it will be told Jerusalem, "Don't be afraid!" and to Zion, "Don't lose courage!"
16 In that day it will be said to Jerusalem:“Do not be afraid, O Zion;Do not let your hands fall limp.
17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

18 I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.
18 I will gather the afflicted from the solemn assembly; those who were with you, who were bearing a burden of disgrace.
18 “I will gather those [Israelites in captivity] who grieve about the appointed feasts—They came from you, [O Zion];On whom the reproach [of exile] is a burden.
19 Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.
19 "Watch how I deal with everyone who oppresses you! At that time I will rescue the one who is lame, and I will draw to me the one who has been driven away. I will honor them with praise and with a good reputation in every land where they have been put to shame.
20 “At that time I will (BB)bring you in,Even at the time when I gather you together;Indeed, I will give you (BC)renown and praiseAmong all the peoples of the earth,When I (BD)restore your fortunes before your eyes,”Says the Lord.
20 At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the LORD.
