the land

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

of Israel ､

､ לֵאמֹ֑ר

אָבוֹת֙

’ā·ḇō·wṯ

יֹ֣אכְלוּ

yō·ḵə·lū

､ בֹ֔סֶר

ḇō·ser,

sour grapes ､

וְשִׁנֵּ֥י

wə·šin·nê

הַבָּנִ֖ים

hab·bā·nîm

of the sons

؟ תִּקְהֶֽינָה׃

tiq·he·nāh.

are set on edge ؟

､ חַי־

אָ֕נִי

､ וּצְדָקָֽה׃

and right ､

אֶל־

on

､ הֶֽהָרִים֙

he·hā·rîm

the mountains ､

לֹ֣א

not

אָכָ֔ל

’ā·ḵāl,

if he has eaten

וְעֵינָיו֙

wə·‘ê·nāw

לֹ֣א

נָשָׂ֔א

אֶל־

to

גִּלּוּלֵ֖י

בֵּ֣ית

of the house

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

of his neighbor

וְאֶל־

and

､ אִשָּׁ֥ה

a woman ､

נִדָּ֖ה

nid·dāh

during her impurity

לֹ֥א

. יִקְרָֽב׃

yiq·rāḇ.

､ וְאִישׁ֙

wə·’îš

And anyone ､

לֹ֣א

not

יוֹנֶ֔ה

yō·w·neh,

if he has oppressed

､ חֲבֹלָת֥וֹ

ḥă·ḇō·lā·ṯōw

חוֹב֙

ḥō·wḇ

to the debtor

יָשִׁ֔יב

yā·šîḇ,

[But] has restored

､ גְּזֵלָ֖ה

gə·zê·lāh

by violence ､

לֹ֣א

lō

no one

יִגְזֹ֑ל

yiḡ·zōl;

לַחְמוֹ֙

laḥ·mōw

､ לְרָעֵ֣ב

lə·rā·‘êḇ

to the hungry ､

יִתֵּ֔ן

yit·tên,

[But] has given

וְעֵירֹ֖ם

wə·‘ê·rōm

and the naked

יְכַסֶּה־

yə·ḵas·seh-

– בָּֽגֶד׃

bā·ḡeḏ.

with clothing –

､ בַּנֶּ֣שֶׁךְ

ban·ne·šeḵ

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

יִתֵּ֗ן

yit·tên,

if he has exacted

､ וְתַרְבִּית֙

wə·ṯar·bîṯ

and any increase ､

לֹ֣א

lō

יִקָּ֔ח

yiq·qāḥ,

､ מֵעָ֖וֶל

mê·‘ā·wel

from iniquity ､

יָשִׁ֣יב

yā·šîḇ

[But] has withdrawn

יָד֑וֹ

yā·ḏōw;

מִשְׁפַּ֤ט

miš·paṭ

אֱמֶת֙

’ĕ·meṯ

יַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה

בֵּ֥ין

and man ､

､ בְּחֻקּוֹתַ֧י

in My statutes ､

יְהַלֵּ֛ךְ

yə·hal·lêḵ

[If] he has walked

､ וּמִשְׁפָּטַ֥י

ū·miš·pā·ṭay

and My judgments ､

שָׁמַ֖ר

šā·mar

לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

– אֱמֶ֑ת

’ĕ·meṯ;

､ צַדִּ֥יק

ṣad·dîq

just ､

הוּא֙

hū

He [is]

חָיֹ֣ה

ḥā·yōh

､ יִֽחְיֶ֔ה

yiḥ·yeh,

He shall live ､

נְאֻ֖ם

nə·’um

אֲדֹנָ֥י

’ă·ḏō·nāy

the Lord

. יְהוִֽה׃

Yah·weh.

וְהוֹלִ֥יד

wə·hō·w·lîḏ

And if he begets

בֵּן־

bên-

､ פָּרִ֖יץ

pā·rîṣ

[who] [is] a robber ､

שֹׁפֵ֣ךְ

šō·p̄êḵ

､ דָּ֑ם

dām;

of blood ､

וְעָ֣שָׂה

wə·‘ā·śāh

and [Who] does

אָ֔ח

’āḥ,

מֵאַחַ֖ד

mê·’a·ḥaḏ

. מֵאֵֽלֶּה׃

mê·’êl·leh.

of these [things] .

וְה֕וּא

wə·hū

And he

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

kāl-

אֵ֖לֶּה

’êl·leh

of these [duties]

לֹ֣א

עָשָׂ֑ה

‘ā·śāh;

כִּ֣י

kî

גַ֤ם

but

אֶל־

’el-

on

､ הֶֽהָרִים֙

he·hā·rîm

the mountains ､

אָכַ֔ל

’ā·ḵal,

וְאֶת־

Or

､ אֵ֥שֶׁת

of his neighbor

The poor

､ וְאֶבְיוֹן֙

הוֹנָ֔ה

if he has oppressed

､ גְּזֵל֣וֹת

by violence ､

גָּזָ֔ל

gā·zāl,

､ חֲבֹ֖ל

the pledge ､

לֹ֣א

Not

יָשִׁ֑יב

וְאֶל־

and to

､ הַגִּלּוּלִים֙

hag·gil·lū·lîm

the idols ､

נָשָׂ֣א

עֵינָ֔יו

‘ê·nāw,

､ תּוֹעֵבָ֖ה

tō·w·‘ê·ḇāh

abomination ､

. עָשָֽׂה׃

‘ā·śāh.

[Or] committed .

､ בַּנֶּ֧שֶׁךְ

ban·ne·šeḵ

נָתַ֛ן

nā·ṯan

if he has exacted

– וְתַרְבִּ֥ית

wə·ṯar·bîṯ

Or increase –

לָקַ֖ח

lā·qaḥ

וָחָ֑י

wā·ḥāy;

then shall he live

לֹ֣א

؟ יִֽחְיֶ֗ה

He shall live ؟

if he has done

– יוּמָ֔ת

He shall die –

דָּמָ֖יו

shall be .

､ וְהִנֵּה֙

And however ､

הוֹלִ֣יד

[If] he begets

for his iniquity .

The Soul who Sins will Die

וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם

And yet you say

؟ מַדֻּ֛עַ

mad·du·a‘

why ؟

לֹא־

הַבֵּ֖ן

the son

and because the son

מִשְׁפָּ֧ט

and the wickedness

[רשע]

(הָרָשָׁ֖ע)

. תִּֽהְיֶֽה׃

shall be .

But a wicked man

he has committed ､

וְשָׁמַר֙

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

､ חֻקּוֹתַ֔י

My statutes ､

וְעָשָׂ֥ה

and does

מִשְׁפָּ֖ט

､ וּצְדָקָ֑ה

and right ､

חָיֹ֥ה

he shall live ､

Of

פְּשָׁעָיו֙

the transgressions

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

､ עָשָׂ֔ה

‘ā·śāh,

he has committed ､

לֹ֥א

lō

יִזָּכְר֖וּ

yiz·zā·ḵə·rū

shall be remembered

ל֑וֹ

lōw;

בְּצִדְקָת֥וֹ

bə·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯōw

because of the righteousness

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

עָשָׂ֖ה

‘ā·śāh

. יִֽחְיֶֽה׃

yiḥ·yeh.

he shall live .

הֶחָפֹ֤ץ

he·ḥā·p̄ōṣ

Do any at all

אֶחְפֹּץ֙

’eḥ·pōṣ

I have pleasure

؟ מ֣וֹת

mō·wṯ

that should die ؟

רָשָׁ֔ע

rā·šā‘,

נְאֻ֖ם

nə·’um

אֲדֹנָ֣י

’ă·ḏō·nāy

the Lord

– יְהוִ֑ה

Yah·weh;

GOD –

הֲל֛וֹא

hă·lō·w

not

בְּשׁוּב֥וֹ

bə·šū·ḇōw

[and] that he should turn

､ מִדְּרָכָ֖יו

mid·də·rā·ḵāw

from his ways ､

؟ וְחָיָֽה׃

wə·ḥā·yāh.

and live ؟

וּבְשׁ֨וּב

but when turns away

צַדִּ֤יק

ṣad·dîq

a righteous man

､ מִצִּדְקָתוֹ֙

miṣ·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯōw

from his righteousness ､

וְעָ֣שָׂה

wə·‘ā·śāh

､ עָ֔וֶל

‘ā·wel,

כְּכֹ֨ל

kə·ḵōl

according to all

הַתּוֹעֵב֜וֹת

hat·tō·w·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ

the abominations

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

עָשָׂ֧ה

‘ā·śāh

הָרָשָׁ֛ע

hā·rā·šā‘

the wicked [man]

､ יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה

ya·‘ă·śeh

and does ､

וָחָ֑י

wā·ḥāy;

and shall he live

כָּל־

kāl-

[צדקתו]

ṣiḏ·qā·ṯōw

-

(צִדְקֹתָ֤יו)

ṣiḏ·qō·ṯāw

the righteousness

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

עָשָׂה֙

‘ā·śāh

לֹ֣א

lō

not

– תִזָּכַ֔רְנָה

ṯiz·zā·ḵar·nāh,

shall be remembered –

､ בְּמַעֲל֧וֹ

bə·ma·‘ă·lōw

because of the unfaithfulness ､

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

מָעַ֛ל

mā·‘al

he is guilty

וּבְחַטָּאת֥וֹ

ū·ḇə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯōw

and the sin

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

､ חָטָ֖א

ḥā·ṭā

he has committed ､

בָּ֥ם

bām

because of them

. יָמֽוּת׃

yā·mūṯ.

､ וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם

wa·’ă·mar·tem

And yet you say ､

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. יִתָּכֵ֖ן

yit·tā·ḵên

is just .

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

The way

אֲדֹנָ֑י

’ă·ḏō·nāy;

of the Lord

שִׁמְעוּ־

､ נָא֙

now ､

בֵּ֣ית

– יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

of Israel –

הֲדַרְכִּי֙

hă·ḏar·kî

is it My way

לֹ֣א

not

؟ יִתָּכֵ֔ן

yit·tā·ḵên,

which is just ؟

הֲלֹ֥א

hă·lō

not

דַרְכֵיכֶ֖ם

ḏar·ḵê·ḵem

לֹ֥א

not

؟ יִתָּכֵֽנוּ׃

yit·tā·ḵê·nū.

which are fair ؟

בְּשׁוּב־

bə·šūḇ-

when turns away

צַדִּ֧יק

ṣad·dîq

a righteous [man]

､ מִצִּדְקָת֛וֹ

miṣ·ṣiḏ·qā·ṯōw

from his righteousness ､

וְעָ֥שָׂה

wə·‘ā·śāh

､ עָ֖וֶל

‘ā·wel

וּמֵ֣ת

ū·mêṯ

and dies

עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם

‘ă·lê·hem;

in it

בְּעַוְל֥וֹ

bə·‘aw·lōw

is because of the iniquity

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

עָשָׂ֖ה

. יָמֽוּת׃

yā·mūṯ.

And Again when turns away

רָשָׁ֗ע

rā·šā‘,

מֵֽרִשְׁעָתוֹ֙

from the wickedness

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

､ עָשָׂ֔ה

‘ā·śāh,

he committed ､

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ

way·ya·‘aś

and does

מִשְׁפָּ֖ט

miš·pāṭ

､ וּצְדָקָ֑ה

ū·ṣə·ḏā·qāh;

and right ､

ה֖וּא

hū

he

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

נַפְשׁ֥וֹ

. יְחַיֶּֽה׃

yə·ḥay·yeh.

shall preserve alive .

､ וַיִּרְאֶ֣ה

way·yir·’eh

And because he considers ､

[וישוב]

פְּשָׁעָ֖יו

דַרְכֵיכֶ֖ם

､ כִּדְרָכָ֜יו

according to his ways ､

אֶשְׁפֹּ֤ט

I will judge

אֶתְכֶם֙

’eṯ·ḵem

בֵּ֣ית

bêṯ

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

of Israel ､

נְאֻ֖ם

nə·’um

אֲדֹנָ֣י

’ă·ḏō·nāy

the Lord

יְהוִ֑ה

Yah·weh;

､ שׁ֤וּבוּ

šū·ḇū

וְהָשִׁ֙יבוּ֙

wə·hā·šî·ḇū

and turn

מִכָּל־

mik·kāl

– פִּשְׁעֵיכֶ֔ם

piš·‘ê·ḵem,

your transgressions –

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

so that not

יִהְיֶ֥ה

yih·yeh

will be

לָכֶ֛ם

lā·ḵem

to you

לְמִכְשׁ֖וֹל

lə·miḵ·šō·wl

. עָוֺֽן׃

‘ā·wōn.

הַשְׁלִ֣יכוּ

haš·lî·ḵū

מֵעֲלֵיכֶ֗ם

mê·‘ă·lê·ḵem,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

כָּל־

kāl-

､ פִּשְׁעֵיכֶם֙

piš·‘ê·ḵem

the transgressions ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

– פְּשַׁעְתֶּ֣ם

pə·ša‘·tem

have committed –

בָּ֔ם

bām,

וַעֲשׂ֥וּ

wa·‘ă·śū

and get

לָכֶ֛ם

lā·ḵem

לֵ֥ב

lêḇ

חָדָ֖שׁ

ḥā·ḏāš

! וְר֣וּחַ

wə·rū·aḥ

and a spirit !

חֲדָשָׁ֑ה

ḥă·ḏā·šāh;

וְלָ֥מָּה

wə·lām·māh

､ תָמֻ֖תוּ

ṯā·mu·ṯū

should you die ､

בֵּ֥ית

bêṯ

؟ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

yiś·rā·’êl.

of Israel ؟

כִּ֣י

kî

לֹ֤א

lō

no

אֶחְפֹּץ֙

’eḥ·pōṣ

I have pleasure

בְּמ֣וֹת

bə·mō·wṯ

in the death

､ הַמֵּ֔ת

ham·mêṯ,

of one who dies ､

נְאֻ֖ם

nə·’um

אֲדֹנָ֣י

’ă·ḏō·nāy

the Lord

– יְהוִ֑ה

Yah·weh;

GOD –

וְהָשִׁ֖יבוּ

wə·hā·šî·ḇū

and therefore turn

. וִֽחְיֽוּ׃

wiḥ·yū.

and live .
