וְהָ֣אָדָ֔ם

And Adam

יָדַ֖ע

yā·ḏa‘

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

חַוָּ֣ה

ḥaw·wāh

– אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ

’iš·tōw;

､ וַתַּ֙הַר֙

wat·ta·har

and she conceived ､

וַתֵּ֣לֶד

wat·tê·leḏ

and bore

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ קַ֔יִן

qa·yin,

Cain ､

､ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

and said ､

קָנִ֥יתִי

qā·nî·ṯî

I have acquired

אִ֖ישׁ

’îš

אֶת־

’eṯ-

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

וַתֹּ֣סֶף

wat·tō·sep̄

לָלֶ֔דֶת

lā·le·ḏeṯ,

bore [this time]

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אָחִ֖יו

’ā·ḥîw

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הָ֑בֶל

hā·ḇel;

וַֽיְהִי־

way·hî-

And was

הֶ֙בֶל֙

he·ḇel

רֹ֣עֵה

rō·‘êh

､ צֹ֔אן

ṣōn,

of sheep ､

וְקַ֕יִן

wə·qa·yin

but Cain

הָיָ֖ה

hā·yāh

עֹבֵ֥ד

‘ō·ḇêḏ

. אֲדָמָֽה׃

’ă·ḏā·māh.

of the ground .

､ וַֽיְהִ֖י

way·hî

And it came to pass ､

מִקֵּ֣ץ

miq·qêṣ

in the course

､ יָמִ֑ים

yā·mîm;

of time ､

וַיָּבֵ֨א

way·yā·ḇê

קַ֜יִן

qa·yin

מִפְּרִ֧י

mip·pə·rî

of the fruit

הָֽאֲדָמָ֛ה

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh

of the ground

מִנְחָ֖ה

min·ḥāh

. לַֽיהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

וְהֶ֨בֶל

wə·he·ḇel

And Abel

הֵבִ֥יא

hê·ḇî

גַם־

ḡam-

ה֛וּא

hū

he

מִבְּכֹר֥וֹת

mib·bə·ḵō·rō·wṯ

of the firstborn

､ צֹאנ֖וֹ

ṣō·nōw

of his flock ､

. וּמֵֽחֶלְבֵהֶ֑ן

ū·mê·ḥel·ḇê·hen;

and of their fat .

וַיִּ֣שַׁע

way·yi·ša‘

And looked favorably

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

אֶל־

’el-

הֶ֖בֶל

he·ḇel

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and

. מִנְחָתֽוֹ׃

min·ḥā·ṯōw.

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

But

קַ֥יִן

qa·yin

וְאֶל־

wə·’el-

and

､ מִנְחָת֖וֹ

min·ḥā·ṯōw

his offering ､

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. שָׁעָ֑ה

šā·‘āh;

He did respect .

､ וַיִּ֤חַר

way·yi·ḥar

And was angry ､

לְקַ֙יִן֙

lə·qa·yin

､ מְאֹ֔ד

mə·’ōḏ,

very ､

וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ

way·yip·pə·lū

and fell

. פָּנָֽיו׃

pā·nāw.

his countenance .

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

way·yō·mer

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ קָ֑יִן

qā·yin;

Cain ､

לָ֚מָּה

lām·māh

؟ חָ֣רָה

ḥā·rāh

לָ֔ךְ

lāḵ,

וְלָ֖מָּה

wə·lām·māh

and why

נָפְל֥וּ

nā·p̄ə·lū

؟ פָנֶֽיךָ׃

p̄ā·ne·ḵā.

your countenance ؟

הֲל֤וֹא

hă·lō·w

will not

אִם־

’im-

if

､ תֵּיטִיב֙

tê·ṭîḇ

you do well ､

؟ שְׂאֵ֔ת

śə·’êṯ,

you be accepted ؟

וְאִם֙

wə·’im

and if

לֹ֣א

lō

not

､ תֵיטִ֔יב

ṯê·ṭîḇ,

you do well ､

לַפֶּ֖תַח

lap·pe·ṯaḥ

at the door

חַטָּ֣את

ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ

､ רֹבֵ֑ץ

rō·ḇêṣ;

lies ､

וְאֵלֶ֙יךָ֙

wə·’ê·le·ḵā

תְּשׁ֣וּקָת֔וֹ

tə·šū·qā·ṯōw,

its desire [is]

וְאַתָּ֖ה

wə·’at·tāh

but you

תִּמְשָׁל־

tim·šāl-

. בּֽוֹ׃

bōw.

over it .

Cain Murders Abel

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

way·yō·mer

קַ֖יִן

qa·yin

אֶל־

’el-

with

הֶ֣בֶל

he·ḇel

– אָחִ֑יו

’ā·ḥîw;

his brother –

､ וַֽיְהִי֙

way·hî

and it came to pass ､

בִּהְיוֹתָ֣ם

bih·yō·w·ṯām

､ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה

baś·śā·ḏeh,

in the field ､

וַיָּ֥קָם

way·yā·qām

קַ֛יִן

qa·yin

אֶל־

’el-

הֶ֥בֶל

he·ḇel

､ אָחִ֖יו

’ā·ḥîw

his brother ､

. וַיַּהַרְגֵֽהוּ׃

way·ya·har·ḡê·hū.

and killed him .

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ קַ֔יִן

qa·yin,

Cain ､

אֵ֖י

’ê

where [is]

הֶ֣בֶל

he·ḇel

؟ אָחִ֑יךָ

’ā·ḥî·ḵā;

your brother ؟

､ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

way·yō·mer

and He said ､

לֹ֣א

lō

not

؟ יָדַ֔עְתִּי

yā·ḏa‘·tî,

I do know ؟

הֲשֹׁמֵ֥ר

hă·šō·mêr

אָחִ֖י

’ā·ḥî

؟ אָנֹֽכִי׃

’ā·nō·ḵî.

[am] I ؟

､ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and He said ､

מֶ֣ה

meh

؟ עָשִׂ֑יתָ

‘ā·śî·ṯā;

have you done ؟

ק֚וֹל

qō·wl

דְּמֵ֣י

də·mê

of the blood

אָחִ֔יךָ

’ā·ḥî·ḵā,

of your brother

צֹעֲקִ֥ים

ṣō·‘ă·qîm

אֵלַ֖י

’ê·lay

to Me

מִן־

min-

! הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh.

the ground !

וְעַתָּ֖ה

wə·‘at·tāh

so now

אָר֣וּר

’ā·rūr

אָ֑תָּה

’āt·tāh;

מִן־

min-

､ הָֽאֲדָמָה֙

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh

the earth ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

פָּצְתָ֣ה

pā·ṣə·ṯāh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

פִּ֔יהָ

pî·hā,

לָקַ֛חַת

lā·qa·ḥaṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

דְּמֵ֥י

də·mê

אָחִ֖יךָ

’ā·ḥî·ḵā

of your brother

. מִיָּדֶֽךָ׃

mî·yā·ḏe·ḵā.

from your hand .

כִּ֤י

kî

תַֽעֲבֹד֙

ṯa·‘ă·ḇōḏ

､ אֶת־

’eṯ-

- ､

הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh,

לֹֽא־

lō-

no

תֹסֵ֥ף

ṯō·sêp̄

it shall longer

תֵּת־

têṯ-

כֹּחָ֖הּ

kō·ḥāh

– לָ֑ךְ

lāḵ;

to you –

נָ֥ע

nā‘

וָנָ֖ד

wā·nāḏ

תִּֽהְיֶ֥ה

tih·yeh

. בָאָֽרֶץ׃

ḇā·’ā·reṣ.

on the earth .

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

קַ֖יִן

qa·yin

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

גָּד֥וֹל

gā·ḏō·wl

עֲוֺנִ֖י

‘ă·wō·nî

! מִנְּשֹֽׂא׃

min·nə·śō.

than I can bear !

､ הֵן֩

hên

גֵּרַ֨שְׁתָּ

gê·raš·tā

You have driven out

אֹתִ֜י

’ō·ṯî

me

､ הַיּ֗וֹם

hay·yō·wm,

מֵעַל֙

mê·‘al

פְּנֵ֣י

pə·nê

the face

– הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה

hā·’ă·ḏā·māh,

of the ground –

וּמִפָּנֶ֖יךָ

ū·mip·pā·ne·ḵā

and from Your face

– אֶסָּתֵ֑ר

’es·sā·ṯêr;

I shall be hidden –

וְהָיִ֜יתִי

wə·hā·yî·ṯî

and I shall be

נָ֤ע

nā‘

וָנָד֙

wā·nāḏ

– בָּאָ֔רֶץ

bā·’ā·reṣ,

on the earth –

､ וְהָיָ֥ה

wə·hā·yāh

and it will come to pass [that] ､

כָל־

ḵāl

מֹצְאִ֖י

mō·ṣə·’î

. יַֽהַרְגֵֽנִי׃

ya·har·ḡê·nî.

will kill me .

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

ל֣וֹ

lōw

to him

､ יְהוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

לָכֵן֙

lā·ḵên

כָּל־

kāl-

הֹרֵ֣ג

hō·rêḡ

､ קַ֔יִן

qa·yin,

Cain ､

שִׁבְעָתַ֖יִם

šiḇ·‘ā·ṯa·yim

. יֻקָּ֑ם

yuq·qām;

vengeance shall be taken on him .

וַיָּ֨שֶׂם

way·yā·śem

And set

יְהוָ֤ה

Yah·weh

לְקַ֙יִן֙

lə·qa·yin

､ א֔וֹת

’ō·wṯ,

a mark ､

לְבִלְתִּ֥י

lə·ḇil·tî

הַכּוֹת־

hak·kō·wṯ-

אֹת֖וֹ

’ō·ṯōw

כָּל־

kāl-

. מֹצְאֽוֹ׃

mō·ṣə·’ōw.

וַיֵּ֥צֵא

way·yê·ṣê

קַ֖יִן

qa·yin

מִלִּפְנֵ֣י

mil·lip̄·nê

from the presence

､ יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

of Yahweh ､

וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב

way·yê·šeḇ

בְּאֶֽרֶץ־

bə·’e·reṣ-

in the land

､ נ֖וֹד

nō·wḏ

of Nod ､

קִדְמַת־

qiḏ·maṯ-

. עֵֽדֶן׃

‘ê·ḏen.

of Eden .

The Descendants of Cain

וַיֵּ֤דַע

way·yê·ḏa‘

And knew

קַ֙יִן֙

qa·yin

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ

’iš·tōw,

､ וַתַּ֖הַר

wat·ta·har

and she conceived ､

וַתֵּ֣לֶד

wat·tê·leḏ

and bore

אֶת־

’eṯ-

– חֲנ֑וֹךְ

ḥă·nō·wḵ;

וַֽיְהִי֙

way·hî

and

בֹּ֣נֶה

､ עִ֔יר

‘îr,

a city ､

וַיִּקְרָא֙

way·yiq·rā

שֵׁ֣ם

the name

､ הָעִ֔יר

hā·‘îr,

of the city ､

כְּשֵׁ֖ם

､ בְּנ֥וֹ

of his son ､

. חֲנֽוֹךְ׃

וַיִּוָּלֵ֤ד

way·yiw·wā·lêḏ

לַֽחֲנוֹךְ֙

､ עִירָ֔ד

Irad ､

וְעִירָ֕ד

and Irad

יָלַ֖ד

､ מְחֽוּיָאֵ֑ל

mə·ḥū·yā·’êl;

וּמְחִיּיָאֵ֗ל

יָלַד֙

､ מְת֣וּשָׁאֵ֔ל

וּמְתוּשָׁאֵ֖ל

וַיִּֽקַּֽח־

And took

. צִלָּֽה׃

וַתֵּ֥לֶד

wat·tê·leḏ

And bore

עָדָ֖ה

– יָבָ֑ל

yā·ḇāl;

ה֣וּא

He

הָיָ֔ה

hā·yāh,

אֲבִ֕י

יֹשֵׁ֥ב

of those who dwell

､ אֹ֖הֶל

’ō·hel

in tents ､

. וּמִקְנֶֽה׃

and [raise] livestock .

וְשֵׁ֥ם

And the name

אָחִ֖יו

’ā·ḥîw

– יוּבָ֑ל

yū·ḇāl;

[was] Jubal –

ה֣וּא

הָיָ֔ה

hā·yāh,

אֲבִ֕י

of all

תֹּפֵ֥שׂ

כִּנּ֖וֹר

the harp

. וְעוּגָֽב׃

wə·‘ū·ḡāḇ.

and flute .

וְצִלָּ֣ה

wə·ṣil·lāh

And as for Zillah

גַם־

ḡam-

הִ֗וא

hî

יָֽלְדָה֙

yā·lə·ḏāh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

תּ֣וּבַל

tū·ḇal

-

､ קַ֔יִן

qa·yin,

לֹטֵ֕שׁ

lō·ṭêš

כָּל־

kāl-

חֹרֵ֥שׁ

ḥō·rêš

נְחֹ֖שֶׁת

nə·ḥō·šeṯ

– וּבַרְזֶ֑ל

ū·ḇar·zel;

and iron –

וַֽאֲח֥וֹת

wa·’ă·ḥō·wṯ

and the sister

תּֽוּבַל־

tū·ḇal-

of

קַ֖יִן

qa·yin

. נַֽעֲמָֽה׃

na·‘ă·māh.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

לֶ֜מֶךְ

le·meḵ

､ לְנָשָׁ֗יו

lə·nā·šāw,

to his wives ､

עָדָ֤ה

‘ā·ḏāh

､ וְצִלָּה֙

wə·ṣil·lāh

and Zillah ､

שְׁמַ֣עַן

šə·ma·‘an

– קוֹלִ֔י

qō·w·lî,

my voice –

נְשֵׁ֣י

nə·šê

､ לֶ֔מֶךְ

le·meḵ,

of Lamech ､

הַאְזֵ֖נָּה

ha’·zên·nāh

: אִמְרָתִ֑י

’im·rā·ṯî;

to my speech :

כִּ֣י

kî

אִ֤ישׁ

’îš

הָרַ֙גְתִּי֙

hā·raḡ·tî

､ לְפִצְעִ֔י

lə·p̄iṣ·‘î,

for wounding me ､

､ וְיֶ֖לֶד

wə·ye·leḏ

and Even a young man ､

. לְחַבֻּרָתִֽי׃

lə·ḥab·bu·rā·ṯî.

for wounding me .

כִּ֥י

kî

If

שִׁבְעָתַ֖יִם

šiḇ·‘ā·ṯa·yim

יֻקַּם־

yuq·qam-

shall be avenged

､ קָ֑יִן

qā·yin;

Cain ､

וְלֶ֖מֶךְ

wə·le·meḵ

שִׁבְעִ֥ים

šiḇ·‘îm

. וְשִׁבְעָֽה׃

wə·šiḇ·‘āh.

Seth and Enosh

וַיֵּ֨דַע

way·yê·ḏa‘

And knew

אָדָ֥ם

’ā·ḏām

עוֹד֙

‘ō·wḏ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ

’iš·tōw,

וַתֵּ֣לֶד

wat·tê·leḏ

､ בֵּ֔ן

bên,

a son ､

וַתִּקְרָ֥א

Seth ､

Cain ､

and as for Seth ､

גַּם־

a son –

וַיִּקְרָ֥א

and he named
