וַיִּשְׁמַ֗ע

Now [Jacob] heard

of the sons

､ לָבָן֙

lā·ḇān

of Laban ､

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

לָקַ֣ח

lā·qaḥ

יַעֲקֹ֔ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

אֵ֖ת

’êṯ

-

כָּל־

kāl-

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

– לְאָבִ֑ינוּ

lə·’ā·ḇî·nū;

of our father –

､ וּמֵאֲשֶׁ֣ר

ū·mê·’ă·šer

and from what was ､

לְאָבִ֔ינוּ

lə·’ā·ḇî·nū,

עָשָׂ֕ה

‘ā·śāh

he has acquired

אֵ֥ת

’êṯ

-

כָּל־

kāl-

הַכָּבֹ֖ד

hak·kā·ḇōḏ

. הַזֶּֽה׃

haz·zeh.

וַיַּ֥רְא

way·yar

And saw

יַעֲקֹ֖ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

פְּנֵ֣י

pə·nê

the countenance

､ לָבָ֑ן

lā·ḇān;

of Laban ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

and indeed ､

אֵינֶ֛נּוּ

’ê·nen·nū

it [was] not [favorable]

עִמּ֖וֹ

‘im·mōw

כִּתְמ֥וֹל

kiṯ·mō·wl

as

. שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃

šil·šō·wm.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

אֶֽל־

’el-

､ יַעֲקֹ֔ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

to Jacob ､

שׁ֛וּב

šūḇ

אֶל־

’el-

to

אֶ֥רֶץ

’e·reṣ

the land

､ אֲבוֹתֶ֖יךָ

’ă·ḇō·w·ṯe·ḵā

of your fathers ､

– וּלְמוֹלַדְתֶּ֑ךָ

ū·lə·mō·w·laḏ·te·ḵā;

and to your family –

וְאֶֽהְיֶ֖ה

wə·’eh·yeh

and I will be

. עִמָּֽךְ׃

‘im·māḵ.

with you .

וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח

way·yiš·laḥ

､ יַעֲקֹ֔ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

וַיִּקְרָ֖א

way·yiq·rā

לְרָחֵ֣ל

lə·rā·ḥêl

וּלְלֵאָ֑ה

ū·lə·lê·’āh;

and Leah

הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה

haś·śā·ḏeh

to the field

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ צֹאנֽוֹ׃

ṣō·nōw.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said

､ לָהֶ֗ן

lā·hen,

to them ､

רֹאֶ֤ה

rō·’eh

אָנֹכִי֙

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

פְּנֵ֣י

､ אֲבִיכֶ֔ן

of your father ､

כִּֽי־

that it [is]

אֵינֶ֥נּוּ

כִּתְמֹ֣ל

kiṯ·mōl

as

. שִׁלְשֹׁ֑ם

šil·šōm;

וֵֽאלֹהֵ֣י

But the God

אָבִ֔י

’ā·ḇî,

of my father

הָיָ֖ה

hā·yāh

. עִמָּדִֽי׃

‘im·mā·ḏî.

with me .

וְאַתֵּ֖נָה

wə·’at·tê·nāh

And you

יְדַעְתֶּ֑ן

yə·ḏa‘·ten;

כִּ֚י

kî

בְּכָל־

bə·ḵāl

with all

כֹּחִ֔י

kō·ḥî,

עָבַ֖דְתִּי

‘ā·ḇaḏ·tî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. אֲבִיכֶֽן׃

’ă·ḇî·ḵen.

וַאֲבִיכֶן֙

wa·’ă·ḇî·ḵen

And yet your father

הֵ֣תֶל

hê·ṯel

בִּ֔י

bî,

me

וְהֶחֱלִ֥ף

wə·he·ḥĕ·lip̄

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

מַשְׂכֻּרְתִּ֖י

maś·kur·tî

עֲשֶׂ֣רֶת

– מֹנִ֑ים

mō·nîm;

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

but not

נְתָנ֣וֹ

nə·ṯā·nōw

אֱלֹהִ֔ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm,

לְהָרַ֖ע

lə·hā·ra‘

. עִמָּדִֽי׃

– נְקֻדִּ֑ים

וְאִם־

and if

､ כֹּ֣ה

thus ､

יֹאמַ֗ר

עֲקֻדִּים֙

יִהְיֶ֣ה

– שְׂכָרֶ֔ךָ

וְיָלְד֥וּ

וַיַּצֵּ֧ל

way·yaṣ·ṣêl

So has taken away

אֱלֹהִ֛ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

מִקְנֵ֥ה

miq·nêh

､ אֲבִיכֶ֖ם

’ă·ḇî·ḵem

of your father ､

וַיִּתֶּן־

way·yit·ten-

and given [them]

. לִֽי׃

lî.

to me .

וַיְהִ֗י

way·hî,

And it came to pass

בְּעֵת֙

bə·‘êṯ

at the time

יַחֵ֣ם

ya·ḥêm

､ הַצֹּ֔אן

haṣ·ṣōn,

when the flocks ､

וָאֶשָּׂ֥א

wā·’eś·śā

עֵינַ֛י

‘ê·nay

וָאֵ֖רֶא

wā·’ê·re

and saw

､ בַּחֲל֑וֹם

ba·ḥă·lō·wm;

in a dream ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֤ה

wə·hin·nêh

and behold ､

הָֽעַתֻּדִים֙

hā·‘at·tu·ḏîm

the rams

הָעֹלִ֣ים

hā·‘ō·lîm

עַל־

‘al-

הַצֹּ֔אן

haṣ·ṣōn,

､ עֲקֻדִּ֥ים

‘ă·qud·dîm

[were] streaked ､

､ נְקֻדִּ֖ים

nə·qud·dîm

. וּבְרֻדִּֽים׃

ū·ḇə·rud·dîm.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

way·yō·mer

אֵלַ֜י

’ê·lay

to me

מַלְאַ֧ךְ

mal·’aḵ

הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים

hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm

of God

､ בַּחֲל֖וֹם

ba·ḥă·lō·wm

in a dream ､

! יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ;

､ וָאֹמַ֖ר

wā·’ō·mar

and I said ､

. הִנֵּֽנִי׃

hin·nê·nî.

Here I am .

､ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

way·yō·mer,

And He said ､

שָׂא־

נָ֨א

､ עֵינֶ֤יךָ

､ וּרְאֵה֙

and see ､

כָּל־

הָֽעַתֻּדִים֙

hā·‘at·tu·ḏîm

the rams

הָעֹלִ֣ים

hā·‘ō·lîm

עַל־

‘al-

on

הַצֹּ֔אן

haṣ·ṣōn,

､ עֲקֻדִּ֥ים

‘ă·qud·dîm

[are] streaked ､

､ נְקֻדִּ֖ים

nə·qud·dîm

– וּבְרֻדִּ֑ים

ū·ḇə·rud·dîm;

and spotted –

כִּ֣י

kî

רָאִ֔יתִי

rā·’î·ṯî,

אֵ֛ת

’êṯ

-

כָּל־

kāl-

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

לָבָ֖ן

lā·ḇān

עֹ֥שֶׂה

a vow .

עַתָּ֗ה

､ הַזֹּ֔את

haz·zōṯ,

this ､

וְשׁ֖וּב

to

the land

. מוֹלַדְתֶּֽךָ׃

mō·w·laḏ·te·ḵā.

of your family .

וַתַּ֤עַן

wat·ta·‘an

רָחֵל֙

rā·ḥêl

､ וְלֵאָ֔ה

wə·lê·’āh,

and Leah ､

וַתֹּאמַ֖רְנָה

wat·tō·mar·nāh

and said

､ ל֑וֹ

lōw;

to him ､

הַע֥וֹד

ha·‘ō·wḏ

לָ֛נוּ

for us

חֵ֥לֶק

ḥê·leq

וְנַחֲלָ֖ה

and he carried away

his livestock ､

וְאֶת־

רְכֻשׁוֹ֙

his possessions

And he took

And said

לָבָן֙

､ לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב

lə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

to Jacob ､

מֶ֣ה

meh

､ עָשִׂ֔יתָ

‘ā·śî·ṯā,

have you done ､

וַתִּגְנֹ֖ב

wat·tiḡ·nōḇ

that you have stolen away unknown

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

לְבָבִ֑י

lə·ḇā·ḇî;

to me

וַתְּנַהֵג֙

wat·tə·na·hêḡ

and carried away

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בְּנֹתַ֔י

bə·nō·ṯay,

כִּשְׁבֻי֖וֹת

kiš·ḇu·yō·wṯ

؟ חָֽרֶב׃

ḥā·reḇ.

with the sword ؟

לָ֤מָּה

lām·māh

נַחְבֵּ֙אתָ֙

naḥ·bê·ṯā

did you flee away

לִבְרֹ֔חַ

liḇ·rō·aḥ,

וַתִּגְנֹ֖ב

wat·tiḡ·nōḇ

and steal away from

､ אֹתִ֑י

’ō·ṯî;

me ､

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

and not

הִגַּ֣דְתָּ

hig·gaḏ·tā

､ לִּ֔י

lî,

וָֽאֲשַׁלֵּחֲךָ֛

wā·’ă·šal·lê·ḥă·ḵā

for I might have sent you away

､ בְּשִׂמְחָ֥ה

bə·śim·ḥāh

with joy ､

､ וּבְשִׁרִ֖ים

ū·ḇə·ši·rîm

and singing ､

､ בְּתֹ֥ף

bə·ṯōp̄

with tambourines ､

؟ וּבְכִנּֽוֹר׃

ū·ḇə·ḵin·nō·wr.

and harps ؟

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

and not

נְטַשְׁתַּ֔נִי

nə·ṭaš·ta·nî,

you did allow me

לְנַשֵּׁ֥ק

lə·naš·šêq

לְבָנַ֖י

lə·ḇā·nay

؟ וְלִבְנֹתָ֑י

wə·liḇ·nō·ṯāy;

and my daughters ؟

עַתָּ֖ה

‘at·tāh

הִסְכַּ֥לְתָּֽ

his·kal·tā

you have done foolishly

. עֲשֽׂוֹ׃

‘ă·śōw.

in [so] doing .

It is

. אָבִ֑יךָ

’ā·ḇî·ḵā;

of your father .

לָ֥מָּה

lām·māh

[but] why

גָנַ֖בְתָּ

ḡā·naḇ·tā

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

؟ אֱלֹהָֽי׃

’ĕ·lō·hāy.

my gods ؟

וַיַּ֥עַן

way·ya·‘an

יַעֲקֹ֖ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said

､ לְלָבָ֑ן

lə·lā·ḇān;

to Laban ､

כִּ֣י

､ יָרֵ֔אתִי

yā·rê·ṯî,

I was afraid ､

כִּ֣י

kî

､ אָמַ֔רְתִּי

’ā·mar·tî,

I said ､

פֶּן־

pen-

תִּגְזֹ֥ל

tiḡ·zōl

you would take by force

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בְּנוֹתֶ֖יךָ

bə·nō·w·ṯe·ḵā

. מֵעִמִּֽי׃

mê·‘im·mî.

from me .

of the camel ､

וַתֵּ֣שֶׁב

and sat

. עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם

on them .

וַיְמַשֵּׁ֥שׁ

to Laban ､

､ חַטָּאתִ֔י

my sin ､

דָלַ֖קְתָּ

you have so hotly pursued

؟ אַחֲרָֽי׃

you have searched

and your brothers ､

וְיוֹכִ֖יחוּ

that they may judge

the two of us .

and the rams

That which was torn [by beasts]

הֵבֵ֣אתִי

– אֵלֶ֔יךָ

to you –

bore the loss of it .

מִיָּדִ֖י

､ תְּבַקְשֶׁ֑נָּה

tə·ḇaq·šen·nāh;

you required it ､

גְּנֻֽבְתִ֣י

gə·nuḇ·ṯî

[whether] stolen

､ י֔וֹם

yō·wm,

by day ､

וּגְנֻֽבְתִ֖י

ū·ḡə·nuḇ·ṯî

. לָֽיְלָה׃

lā·yə·lāh.

by night .

– הָיִ֧יתִי

hā·yî·ṯî

[There] I was –

בַיּ֛וֹם

ḇay·yō·wm

in the day

אֲכָלַ֥נִי

’ă·ḵā·la·nî

､ חֹ֖רֶב

ḥō·reḇ

the drought ､

וְקֶ֣רַח

wə·qe·raḥ

and the frost

– בַּלָּ֑יְלָה

bal·lā·yə·lāh;

by night –

וַתִּדַּ֥ד

wat·tid·daḏ

שְׁנָתִ֖י

šə·nā·ṯî

. מֵֽעֵינָֽי׃

mê·‘ê·nāy.

זֶה־

This [is]

עֶשְׂרִ֣ים

. בְּבֵיתֶךָ֒

in your house .

עֲבַדְתִּ֜יךָ

אַרְבַּֽע־

עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה

[and] ten

שָׁנָה֙

בִּשְׁתֵּ֣י

biš·tê

､ בְנֹתֶ֔יךָ

ḇə·nō·ṯe·ḵā,

your daughters ､

וְשֵׁ֥שׁ

wə·šêš

and six

שָׁנִ֖ים

šā·nîm

､ בְּצֹאנֶ֑ךָ

bə·ṣō·ne·ḵā;

for your flock ､

וַתַּחֲלֵ֥ף

wat·ta·ḥă·lêp̄

and you have changed

אֶת־

’eṯ-

מַשְׂכֻּרְתִּ֖י

עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת

the God

and the fear

Jacob's Covenant with Laban

הַבָּנ֨וֹת

[These] daughters [are]

､ בְּנֹתַ֜י

my daughters ､

וְהַבָּנִ֤ים

wə·hab·bā·nîm

and [these] children [are]

､ בָּנַי֙

bā·nay

my children ､

וְהַצֹּ֣אן

wə·haṣ·ṣōn

and [this] flock [is]

､ צֹאנִ֔י

ṣō·nî,

my flock ､

וְכֹ֛ל

wə·ḵōl

and all

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

אַתָּ֥ה

’at·tāh

רֹאֶ֖ה

rō·’eh

לִי־

lî-

. ה֑וּא

hū;

is .

､ וְלִבְנֹתַ֞י

wə·liḇ·nō·ṯay

But my daughters ､

מָֽה־

māh-

אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֤ה

can I do

לָאֵ֙לֶּה֙

הַיּ֔וֹם

hay·yō·wm,

א֥וֹ

לִבְנֵיהֶ֖ן

to their children

؟ יָלָֽדוּ׃

they have borne ؟

וְעַתָּ֗ה

wə·‘at·tāh,

לְכָ֛ה

נִכְרְתָ֥ה

niḵ·rə·ṯāh

､ בְרִ֖ית

ḇə·rîṯ

אֲנִ֣י

’ă·nî

I

– וָאָ֑תָּה

wā·’āt·tāh;

and you –

וְהָיָ֥ה

wə·hā·yāh

and let it be

לְעֵ֖ד

lə·‘êḏ

בֵּינִ֥י

bê·nî

. וּבֵינֶֽךָ׃

ū·ḇê·ne·ḵā.

and you .

וַיִּקַּ֥ח

way·yiq·qaḥ

יַעֲקֹ֖ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ

､ אָ֑בֶן

’ā·ḇen;

a stone ､

וַיְרִימֶ֖הָ

way·rî·me·hā

and set it up

. מַצֵּבָֽה׃

maṣ·ṣê·ḇāh.

[as] a pillar .

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

יַעֲקֹ֤ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ

､ לְאֶחָיו֙

lə·’e·ḥāw

to his brothers ､

לִקְט֣וּ

liq·ṭū

– אֲבָנִ֔ים

’ă·ḇā·nîm,

וַיִּקְח֥וּ

way·yiq·ḥū

､ אֲבָנִ֖ים

’ă·ḇā·nîm

וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־

way·ya·‘ă·śū-

and made

､ גָ֑ל

ḡāl;

a heap ､

וַיֹּ֥אכְלוּ

way·yō·ḵə·lū

שָׁ֖ם

עַל־

‘al-

on

. הַגָּֽל׃

hag·gāl.

the heap .

וַיִּקְרָא־

way·yiq·rā-

and also Mizpah ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

､ אָמַ֔ר

’ā·mar,

he said ､

יִ֥צֶף

יְהוָ֖ה

וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ

נִסָּתֵ֖ר

and you .

עֵ֚ד

this [is] ､

､ הַמַּצֵּבָ֑ה

by the Fear

וַיִּזְבַּ֨ח

זֶ֙בַח֙

ze·ḇaḥ

､ בָּהָ֔ר

bā·hār,

on the mountain ､

וַיִּקְרָ֥א

way·yiq·rā

לְאֶחָ֖יו

lə·’e·ḥāw

לֶאֱכָל־

le·’ĕ·ḵāl-

to eat

. לָ֑חֶם

lā·ḥem;

וַיֹּ֣אכְלוּ

way·yō·ḵə·lū

､ לֶ֔חֶם

le·ḥem,

וַיָּלִ֖ינוּ

way·yā·lî·nū

and stayed all night

. בָּהָֽר׃

bā·hār.

on the mountain .

､ וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם

way·yaš·kêm

And arose early ､

לָבָ֜ן

lā·ḇān

בַּבֹּ֗קֶר

bab·bō·qer,

in the morning

וַיְנַשֵּׁ֧ק

way·naš·šêq

לְבָנָ֛יו

lə·ḇā·nāw

､ וְלִבְנוֹתָ֖יו

wə·liḇ·nō·w·ṯāw

and daughters ､

וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ

way·ḇā·reḵ

אֶתְהֶ֑ם

’eṯ·hem;

､ וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ

way·yê·leḵ

and departed ､

וַיָּ֥שָׁב

way·yā·šāḇ

לָבָ֖ן

lā·ḇān

. לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃

lim·qō·mōw.
