Jacob Meets Esau

וַיִּשָּׂ֨א

יַעֲקֹ֜ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ

､ עֵינָ֗יו

‘ê·nāw,

､ וַיַּרְא֙

way·yar

and looked ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה

wə·hin·nêh

and there ､

עֵשָׂ֣ו

‘ê·śāw

､ בָּ֔א

bā,

וְעִמּ֕וֹ

wə·‘im·mōw

and with him

אַרְבַּ֥ע

’ar·ba‘

מֵא֖וֹת

mê·’ō·wṯ

. אִ֑ישׁ

’îš;

וַיַּ֣חַץ

way·ya·ḥaṣ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַיְלָדִ֗ים

hay·lā·ḏîm,

the sons

עַל־

‘al-

､ לֵאָה֙

lê·’āh

Leah ､

וְעַל־

wə·‘al-

and

､ רָחֵ֔ל

rā·ḥêl,

וְעַ֖ל

wə·‘al

and

שְׁתֵּ֥י

šə·tê

. הַשְּׁפָחֽוֹת׃

haš·šə·p̄ā·ḥō·wṯ.

the maidservants .

וַיָּ֧שֶׂם

way·yā·śem

And he put

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַשְּׁפָח֛וֹת

haš·šə·p̄ā·ḥō·wṯ

the maidservants

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

יַלְדֵיהֶ֖ן

yal·ḏê·hen

､ רִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה

ri·šō·nāh;

in front ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

לֵאָ֤ה

lê·’āh

וִֽילָדֶ֙יהָ֙

wî·lā·ḏe·hā

and her children

､ אַחֲרֹנִ֔ים

’a·ḥă·rō·nîm,

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

רָחֵ֥ל

rā·ḥêl

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

יוֹסֵ֖ף

yō·w·sêp̄

. אַחֲרֹנִֽים׃

’a·ḥă·rō·nîm.

וְה֖וּא

wə·hū

And he

עָבַ֣ר

‘ā·ḇar

לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם

lip̄·nê·hem;

וַיִּשְׁתַּ֤חוּ

way·yiš·ta·ḥū

and bowed himself

אַ֙רְצָה֙

’ar·ṣāh

to the ground

שֶׁ֣בַע

še·ḇa‘

､ פְּעָמִ֔ים

pə·‘ā·mîm,

עַד־

‘aḏ-

גִּשְׁתּ֖וֹ

giš·tōw

עַד־

‘aḏ-

to

. אָחִֽיו׃

’ā·ḥîw.

וַיָּ֨רָץ

way·yā·rāṣ

But ran

עֵשָׂ֤ו

‘ê·śāw

､ לִקְרָאתוֹ֙

liq·rā·ṯōw

to meet him ､

וַֽיְחַבְּקֵ֔הוּ

way·ḥab·bə·qê·hū,

and embraced him

וַיִּפֹּ֥ל

way·yip·pōl

and fell

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ צַוָּארָ֖ו‪‬

ṣaw·wā·rāw

､ וַׄיִּׄשָּׁׄקֵ֑ׄהׄוּׄ‪‬

way·yiš·šā·qê·hū;

and kissed him ､

. וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃

way·yiḇ·kū.

and they wept .

וַיִּשָּׂ֣א

way·yiś·śā

And he lifted

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ עֵינָ֗יו

‘ê·nāw,

וַיַּ֤רְא

way·yar

and saw

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַנָּשִׁים֙

han·nā·šîm

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

– הַיְלָדִ֔ים

hay·lā·ḏîm,

､ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said ､

מִי־

mî-

אֵ֣לֶּה

’êl·leh

לָּ֑ךְ

lāḵ;

with you

､ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר

way·yō·mar

so he said ､

הַיְלָדִ֕ים

hay·lā·ḏîm

the sons

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

חָנַ֥ן

ḥā·nan

has graciously given

אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃

‘aḇ·de·ḵā.

וַתִּגַּ֧שְׁןָ

wat·tig·gaš·nā

､ הַשְּׁפָח֛וֹת

haš·šə·p̄ā·ḥō·wṯ

the maidservants ､

הֵ֥נָּה

hên·nāh

､ וְיַלְדֵיהֶ֖ן

wə·yal·ḏê·hen

and their children ､

. וַתִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶֽיןָ׃

wat·tiš·ta·ḥă·we·nā.

and bowed down .

וַתִּגַּ֧שׁ

wat·tig·gaš

גַּם־

gam-

לֵאָ֛ה

lê·’āh

､ וִילָדֶ֖יהָ

wî·lā·ḏe·hā

with her children ､

– וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֑וּ

way·yiš·ta·ḥă·wū;

and they bowed down –

וְאַחַ֗ר

wə·’a·ḥar,

נִגַּ֥שׁ

nig·gaš

יוֹסֵ֛ף

yō·w·sêp̄

､ וְרָחֵ֖ל

wə·rā·ḥêl

and Rachel ､

. וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֽוּ׃

way·yiš·ta·ḥă·wū.

and they bowed down .

､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And Esau said ､

מִ֥י

mî

who [is]

לְךָ֛

lə·ḵā

to [you]

כָּל־

kāl-

הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה

ham·ma·ḥă·neh

､ הַזֶּ֖ה

haz·zeh

this ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

؟ פָּגָ֑שְׁתִּי

pā·ḡā·šə·tî;

I met ؟

､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and he said ､

לִמְצֹא־

lim·ṣō-

[These are] to find

חֵ֖ן

ḥên

בְּעֵינֵ֥י

bə·‘ê·nê

in the sight

. אֲדֹנִֽי׃

’ă·ḏō·nî.

of my lord .

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר

way·yō·mer

But said

､ עֵשָׂ֖ו

‘ê·śāw

Esau ､

יֶשׁ־

yeš-

לִ֣י

lî

I

､ רָ֑ב

rāḇ;

– אָחִ֕י

’ā·ḥî

my brother –

יְהִ֥י

yə·hî

לְךָ֖

lə·ḵā

-

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

. לָֽךְ׃

lāḵ.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

､ יַעֲקֹ֗ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

､ אַל־

’al-

No ､

､ נָא֙

nā

אִם־

’im-

if

נָ֨א

nā

מָצָ֤אתִי

mā·ṣā·ṯî

חֵן֙

ḥên

､ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ

bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā,

in your sight ､

וְלָקַחְתָּ֥

wə·lā·qaḥ·tā

מִנְחָתִ֖י

min·ḥā·ṯî

､ מִיָּדִ֑י

mî·yā·ḏî;

from my hand ､

כִּ֣י

kî

עַל־

‘al-

as

כֵּ֞ן

kên

רָאִ֣יתִי

rā·’î·ṯî

､ פָנֶ֗יךָ

p̄ā·ne·ḵā,

כִּרְאֹ֛ת

kir·’ōṯ

as though I had seen

פְּנֵ֥י

pə·nê

the face

､ אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

of God ､

. וַתִּרְצֵֽנִי׃

wat·tir·ṣê·nî.

and you were pleased with me .

､ קַח־

qaḥ-

Take ､

､ נָ֤א

nā

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בִּרְכָתִי֙

bir·ḵā·ṯî

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

הֻבָ֣את

hu·ḇāṯ

､ לָ֔ךְ

lāḵ,

to you ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

חַנַּ֥נִי

ḥan·na·nî

has dealt graciously with me

､ אֱלֹהִ֖ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

God ､

וְכִ֣י

wə·ḵî

יֶשׁ־

yeš-

לִי־

lî-

I

. כֹ֑ל

ḵōl;

וַיִּפְצַר־

way·yip̄·ṣar-

So he urged

בּ֖וֹ

bōw

. וַיִּקָּֽח׃

way·yiq·qāḥ.

and he took [it] .

､ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And Esau said ､

､ נִסְעָ֣ה

nis·‘āh

let us take our journey ､

､ וְנֵלֵ֑כָה

wə·nê·lê·ḵāh;

and let us go ､

וְאֵלְכָ֖ה

wə·’ê·lə·ḵāh

and I will go

. לְנֶגְדֶּֽךָ׃

lə·neḡ·de·ḵā.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

､ אֵלָ֗יו

’ê·lāw,

to him ､

אֲדֹנִ֤י

’ă·ḏō·nî

יֹדֵ֙עַ֙

yō·ḏê·a‘

כִּֽי־

kî-

הַיְלָדִ֣ים

hay·lā·ḏîm

the sons

､ רַכִּ֔ים

rak·kîm,

[are] weak ､

וְהַצֹּ֥אן

wə·haṣ·ṣōn

and the flocks

וְהַבָּקָ֖ר

wə·hab·bā·qār

עָל֣וֹת

‘ā·lō·wṯ

which are nursing [are]

､ עָלָ֑י

‘ā·lāy;

with me ､

וּדְפָקוּם֙

ū·ḏə·p̄ā·qūm

and if they are driven hard

י֣וֹם

yō·wm

､ אֶחָ֔ד

’e·ḥāḏ,

one ､

וָמֵ֖תוּ

wā·mê·ṯū

כָּל־

kāl-

. הַצֹּֽאן׃

haṣ·ṣōn.

the flock .

יַעֲבָר־

ya·‘ă·ḇār-

Let go on ahead

､ נָ֥א

nā

､ אֲדֹנִ֖י

’ă·ḏō·nî

my lord ､

לִפְנֵ֣י

lip̄·nê

､ עַבְדּ֑וֹ

‘aḇ·dōw;

his servant ､

וַאֲנִ֞י

wa·’ă·nî

and I

אֶֽתְנָהֲלָ֣ה

’eṯ·nā·hă·lāh

will lead on

､ לְאִטִּ֗י

lə·’iṭ·ṭî,

לְרֶ֨גֶל

lə·re·ḡel

at a pace which

הַמְּלָאכָ֤ה

ham·mə·lā·ḵāh

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

לְפָנַי֙

lə·p̄ā·nay

go before me

וּלְרֶ֣גֶל

ū·lə·re·ḡel

and are able to endure

､ הַיְלָדִ֔ים

hay·lā·ḏîm,

[and] the sons ､

עַ֛ד

‘aḏ

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

אָבֹ֥א

’ā·ḇō

אֶל־

’el-

to

אֲדֹנִ֖י

’ă·ḏō·nî

. שֵׂעִֽירָה׃

śê·‘î·rāh.

in Seir .

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

､ עֵשָׂ֔ו

‘ê·śāw,

Esau ､

אַצִּֽיגָה־

’aṣ·ṣî·ḡāh-

נָּ֣א

nā

עִמְּךָ֔

‘im·mə·ḵā,

with you

מִן־

min-

הָעָ֖ם

hā·‘ām

of the people

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

. אִתִּ֑י

’it·tî;

with me .

､ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

way·yō·mer

But he said ､

לָ֣מָּה

lām·māh

؟ זֶּ֔ה

zeh,

אֶמְצָא־

’em·ṣā-

חֵ֖ן

ḥên

בְּעֵינֵ֥י

bə·‘ê·nê

in the sight

. אֲדֹנִֽי׃

’ă·ḏō·nî.

of my lord .

וַיָּשָׁב֩

way·yā·šāḇ

בַּיּ֨וֹם

bay·yō·wm

הַה֥וּא

ha·hū

עֵשָׂ֛ו

‘ê·śāw

לְדַרְכּ֖וֹ

lə·ḏar·kōw

. שֵׂעִֽירָה׃

śê·‘î·rāh.

to Seir .

וְיַעֲקֹב֙

wə·ya·‘ă·qōḇ

נָסַ֣ע

nā·sa‘

､ סֻכֹּ֔תָה

suk·kō·ṯāh,

to Succoth ､

וַיִּ֥בֶן

way·yi·ḇen

ל֖וֹ

lōw

､ בָּ֑יִת

bā·yiṯ;

a house ､

וּלְמִקְנֵ֙הוּ֙

ū·lə·miq·nê·hū

[and] for his livestock

עָשָׂ֣ה

‘ā·śāh

. סֻכֹּ֔ת

suk·kōṯ,

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּ֛ן

kên

קָרָ֥א

שֵׁם־

the name

הַמָּק֖וֹם

of Shechem ､

אֲשֶׁר֙

which [is]

בְּאֶ֣רֶץ

in the land

､ כְּנַ֔עַן

kə·na·‘an,

of Canaan ､

בְּבֹא֖וֹ

bə·ḇō·’ōw

מִפַּדַּ֣ן

mip·pad·dan

אֲרָ֑ם

from Padan Aram

וַיִּ֖חַן

way·yi·ḥan

and he pitched his tent

אֶת־

. הָעִֽיר׃

the city .

וַיִּ֜קֶן

way·yi·qen

And he bought

אֶת־

’eṯ-

חֶלְקַ֣ת

ḥel·qaṯ

､ הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה

haś·śā·ḏeh,

of land ､

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

נָֽטָה־

nā·ṭāh-

שָׁם֙

šām

､ אָהֳל֔וֹ

’ā·ho·lōw,

מִיַּ֥ד

mî·yaḏ

בְּנֵֽי־

bə·nê-

the sons

､ חֲמ֖וֹר

ḥă·mō·wr

of Hamor ､

אֲבִ֣י

’ă·ḇî

､ שְׁכֶ֑ם

šə·ḵem;

of Shechem ､

בְּמֵאָ֖ה

bə·mê·’āh

. קְשִׂיטָֽה׃

pieces of silver .

וַיַּצֶּב־

way·yaṣ·ṣeḇ-

And he erected

שָׁ֖ם

､ מִזְבֵּ֑חַ

miz·bê·aḥ;

an altar ､

וַיִּ֨קְרָא־

way·yiq·rā-

ל֔וֹ
