And it came to pass ､

בָּעֵ֣ת

bā·‘êṯ

､ הַהִ֔וא

ha·hi·w,

that ､

וַיֵּ֥רֶד

way·yê·reḏ

יְהוּדָ֖ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

מֵאֵ֣ת

mê·’êṯ

､ אֶחָ֑יו

’e·ḥāw;

his brothers ､

וַיֵּ֛ט

way·yêṭ

עַד־

‘aḏ-

אִ֥ישׁ

’îš

､ עֲדֻלָּמִ֖י

‘ă·ḏul·lā·mî

וּשְׁמ֥וֹ

ū·šə·mōw

and his name [was]

. חִירָֽה׃

ḥî·rāh.

וַיַּרְא־

way·yar-

And saw

שָׁ֧ם

šām

יְהוּדָ֛ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

בַּת־

baṯ-

אִ֥ישׁ

’îš

､ כְּנַעֲנִ֖י

kə·na·‘ă·nî

וּשְׁמ֣וֹ

ū·šə·mōw

and whose name [was]

– שׁ֑וּעַ

šū·a‘;

Shua –

וַיִּקָּחֶ֖הָ

way·yiq·qā·ḥe·hā

and he married her

וַיָּבֹ֥א

way·yā·ḇō

and went in

. אֵלֶֽיהָ׃

’ê·le·hā.

to her .

､ וַתַּ֖הַר

wat·ta·har

So she conceived ､

וַתֵּ֣לֶד

wat·tê·leḏ

and bore

– בֵּ֑ן

bên;

a son –

וַיִּקְרָ֥א

way·yiq·rā

and he called

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שְׁמ֖וֹ

šə·mōw

. עֵֽר׃

‘êr.

Er .

וַתַּ֥הַר

wat·ta·har

And she conceived

､ ע֖וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

וַתֵּ֣לֶד

wat·tê·leḏ

and bore

– בֵּ֑ן

bên;

a son –

וַתִּקְרָ֥א

wat·tiq·rā

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שְׁמ֖וֹ

šə·mōw

. אוֹנָֽן׃

’ō·w·nān.

וַתֹּ֤סֶף

wat·tō·sep̄

And she conceived

עוֹד֙

‘ō·wḏ

וַתֵּ֣לֶד

wat·tê·leḏ

and bore

､ בֵּ֔ן

bên,

a son ､

וַתִּקְרָ֥א

wat·tiq·rā

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שְׁמ֖וֹ

šə·mōw

– שֵׁלָ֑ה

šê·lāh;

וְהָיָ֥ה

wə·hā·yāh

and He was

､ בִכְזִ֖יב

ḇiḵ·zîḇ

at Chezib ､

בְּלִדְתָּ֥הּ

bə·liḏ·tāh

. אֹתֽוֹ׃

’ō·ṯōw.

וַיִּקַּ֧ח

way·yiq·qaḥ

And took

יְהוּדָ֛ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

אִשָּׁ֖ה

’iš·šāh

לְעֵ֣ר

lə·‘êr

､ בְּכוֹר֑וֹ

bə·ḵō·w·rōw;

his firstborn ､

וּשְׁמָ֖הּ

ū·šə·māh

and her name [was]

. תָּמָֽר׃

tā·mār.

וַיְהִ֗י

way·hî,

But was

､ עֵ֚ר

‘êr

Er ､

בְּכ֣וֹר

bə·ḵō·wr

､ יְהוּדָ֔ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

of Judah ､

רַ֖ע

ra‘

בְּעֵינֵ֣י

bə·‘ê·nê

in the sight

– יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

of Yahweh –

וַיְמִתֵ֖הוּ

way·mi·ṯê·hū

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

יְהוּדָה֙

yə·hū·ḏāh

､ לְאוֹנָ֔ן

lə·’ō·w·nān,

to Onan ､

בֹּ֛א

bō

go in

אֶל־

’el-

to

אֵ֥שֶׁת

’ê·šeṯ

the wife

､ אָחִ֖יךָ

’ā·ḥî·ḵā

of your brother ､

וְיַבֵּ֣ם

wə·yab·bêm

､ אֹתָ֑הּ

’ō·ṯāh;

her ､

וְהָקֵ֥ם

wə·hā·qêm

and raise up

זֶ֖רַע

ze·ra‘

. לְאָחִֽיךָ׃

lə·’ā·ḥî·ḵā.

to your brother .

וַיֵּ֣דַע

way·yê·ḏa‘

But knew

אוֹנָ֔ן

’ō·w·nān,

כִּ֛י

kî

לֹּ֥א‪‬

lō

not

ל֖וֹ

lōw

יִהְיֶ֣ה

yih·yeh

､ הַזָּ֑רַע

haz·zā·ra‘;

the heir ､

､ וְהָיָ֞ה

wə·hā·yāh

and it came to pass ､

אִם־

’im-

בָּ֨א

bā

he went in

אֶל־

’el-

to

אֵ֤שֶׁת

’ê·šeṯ

the wife

､ אָחִיו֙

’ā·ḥîw

of his brother ､

וְשִׁחֵ֣ת

wə·ši·ḥêṯ

that he emitted

､ אַ֔רְצָה

’ar·ṣāh,

on the ground ､

לְבִלְתִּ֥י

lə·ḇil·tî

נְתָן־

nə·ṯān-

זֶ֖רַע

ze·ra‘

. לְאָחִֽיו׃

lə·’ā·ḥîw.

to his brother .

וַיֵּ֛רַע

way·yê·ra‘

בְּעֵינֵ֥י

bə·‘ê·nê

in the sight

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

the thing which

､ עָשָׂ֑ה

‘ā·śāh;

he did ､

וַיָּ֖מֶת

way·yā·meṯ

therefore He killed

גַּם־

gam-

. אֹתֽוֹ׃

’ō·ṯōw.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

יְהוּדָה֩

yə·hū·ḏāh

לְתָמָ֨ר

lə·ṯā·mār

､ כַּלָּת֜וֹ

kal·lā·ṯōw

his daughter-in-law ､

שְׁבִ֧י

šə·ḇî

אַלְמָנָ֣ה

’al·mā·nāh

､ בֵית־

ḇêṯ-

in the house ､

､ אָבִ֗יךְ

’ā·ḇîḵ,

of in your father ､

עַד־

‘aḏ-

יִגְדַּל֙

yiḡ·dal

שֵׁלָ֣ה

šê·lāh

– בְנִ֔י

ḇə·nî,

my son –

כִּ֣י

kî

､ אָמַ֔ר

’ā·mar,

he said ､

פֶּן־

pen-

יָמ֥וּת

yā·mūṯ

גַּם־

gam-

ה֖וּא

hū

he

– כְּאֶחָ֑יו

kə·’e·ḥāw;

like his brothers –

וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ

wat·tê·leḵ

And went

תָּמָ֔ר

tā·mār,

וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב

wat·tê·šeḇ

בֵּ֥ית

bêṯ

. אָבִֽיהָ׃

’ā·ḇî·hā.

of in her father .

וַיִּרְבּוּ֙

way·yir·bū

הַיָּמִ֔ים

hay·yā·mîm,

in the course of time

וַתָּ֖מָת

wat·tā·māṯ

בַּת־

baṯ-

､ שׁ֣וּעַ

šū·a‘

of Shua ､

אֵֽשֶׁת־

’ê·šeṯ-

. יְהוּדָ֑ה

yə·hū·ḏāh;

of Judah .

וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם

way·yin·nā·ḥem

And was comforted

､ יְהוּדָ֗ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

וַיַּ֜עַל

way·ya·‘al

and went up

עַל־

‘al-

to

גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י

gō·ză·zê

צֹאנוֹ֙

ṣō·nōw

ה֗וּא

hū,

he

וְחִירָ֛ה

wə·ḥî·rāh

､ רֵעֵ֥הוּ

rê·‘ê·hū

､ הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י

hā·‘ă·ḏul·lā·mî

the Adullamite ､

､ תִּמְנָֽתָה׃

tim·nā·ṯāh.

at Timnah ､

וַיֻּגַּ֥ד

way·yug·gaḏ

and it was told

､ לְתָמָ֖ר

lə·ṯā·mār

､ לֵאמֹ֑ר

lê·mōr;

הִנֵּ֥ה

hin·nêh

חָמִ֛יךְ

ḥā·mîḵ

your father-in-law

עֹלֶ֥ה

‘ō·leh

is going up

תִמְנָ֖תָה

ṯim·nā·ṯāh

לָגֹ֥ז

lā·ḡōz

. צֹאנֽוֹ׃

ṣō·nōw.

וַתָּסַר֩

wat·tā·sar

So she took off

בִּגְדֵ֨י

biḡ·ḏê

אַלְמְנוּתָ֜הּ

’al·mə·nū·ṯāh

､ מֵֽעָלֶ֗יהָ

mê·‘ā·le·hā,

וַתְּכַ֤ס

wat·tə·ḵas

and covered [herself]

､ בַּצָּעִיף֙

baṣ·ṣā·‘îp̄

with a veil ､

､ וַתִּתְעַלָּ֔ף

wat·tiṯ·‘al·lāp̄,

and wrapped herself ､

וַתֵּ֙שֶׁב֙

wat·tê·šeḇ

and sat

､ בְּפֶ֣תַח

bə·p̄e·ṯaḥ

in the entrance ､

עֵינַ֔יִם

‘ê·na·yim,

אֲשֶׁ֖ר

’ă·šer

עַל־

‘al-

on

דֶּ֣רֶךְ

de·reḵ

the way

– תִּמְנָ֑תָה

tim·nā·ṯāh;

to Timnah –

כִּ֤י

kî

רָאֲתָה֙

rā·’ă·ṯāh

כִּֽי־

kî-

גָדַ֣ל

ḡā·ḏal

､ שֵׁלָ֔ה

šê·lāh,

וְהִ֕וא

wə·hi·w

and she

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

נִתְּנָ֥ה

nit·tə·nāh

ל֖וֹ

lōw

to him

. לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

lə·’iš·šāh.

as a wife .

וַיִּרְאֶ֣הָ

way·yir·’e·hā

And when saw her

יְהוּדָ֔ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

וַֽיַּחְשְׁבֶ֖הָ

way·yaḥ·šə·ḇe·hā

he thought she [was]

– לְזוֹנָ֑ה

lə·zō·w·nāh;

a harlot –

כִּ֥י

kî

כִסְּתָ֖ה

ḵis·sə·ṯāh

she had covered

. פָּנֶֽיהָ׃

pā·ne·hā.

וַיֵּ֨ט

way·yêṭ

And he turned

אֵלֶ֜יהָ

’ê·le·hā

to her

אֶל־

’el-

by

､ הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ

had·de·reḵ,

the way ､

､ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

way·yō·mer

and said ､

､ הָֽבָה־

hā·ḇāh-

Come ､

､ נָּא֙

nā

now ､

אָב֣וֹא

’ā·ḇō·w

let me come in

､ אֵלַ֔יִךְ

’ê·la·yiḵ,

to you ､

כִּ֚י

kî

לֹ֣א

lō

not

יָדַ֔ע

yā·ḏa‘,

כִּ֥י

kî

כַלָּת֖וֹ

ḵal·lā·ṯōw

his daughter-in-law

. הִ֑וא

hî

､ וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙

wat·tō·mer

So she said ､

מַה־

mah-

תִּתֶּן־

tit·ten-

לִּ֔י‪‬

lî,

me

כִּ֥י

kî

תָב֖וֹא

ṯā·ḇō·w

you may come in

. אֵלָֽי׃

’ê·lāy.

to me .

､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And he said ､

אָנֹכִ֛י

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח

’ă·šal·laḥ

will send

גְּדִֽי־

gə·ḏî-

עִזִּ֖ים

‘iz·zîm

מִן־

min-

. הַצֹּ֑אן

haṣ·ṣōn;

the flock .

､ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

So she said ､

אִם־

’im-

תִּתֵּ֥ן

tit·tên

will you give [me]

､ עֵרָב֖וֹן

‘ê·rā·ḇō·wn

a pledge ､

עַ֥ד

‘aḏ

؟ שָׁלְחֶֽךָ׃

šā·lə·ḥe·ḵā.

you send it ؟

､ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

way·yō·mer,

And he said ､

מָ֣ה

māh

הָֽעֵרָבוֹן֮

hā·‘ê·rā·ḇō·wn

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

אֶתֶּן־

’et·ten-

؟ לָּךְ֒

lāḵ

you ؟

､ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר

wat·tō·mer,

so she said ､

､ חֹתָֽמְךָ֙

ḥō·ṯā·mə·ḵā

Your signet ､

､ וּפְתִילֶ֔ךָ

ū·p̄ə·ṯî·le·ḵā,

and cord ､

וּמַטְּךָ֖

ū·maṭ·ṭə·ḵā

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

that [is]

. בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ

bə·yā·ḏe·ḵā;

וַיִּתֶּן־

way·yit·ten-

And he gave [them]

לָּ֛הּ

lāh

to her

וַיָּבֹ֥א

way·yā·ḇō

and went in

､ אֵלֶ֖יהָ

’ê·le·hā

to her ､

וַתַּ֥הַר

wat·ta·har

and she conceived

. לֽוֹ׃

lōw.

by him .

､ וַתָּ֣קָם

wat·tā·qām

So she arose ､

､ וַתֵּ֔לֶךְ

wat·tê·leḵ,

and went away ､

וַתָּ֥סַר

wat·tā·sar

צְעִיפָ֖הּ

ṣə·‘î·p̄āh

､ מֵעָלֶ֑יהָ

mê·‘ā·le·hā;

upon ､

וַתִּלְבַּ֖שׁ

wat·til·baš

and put on

בִּגְדֵ֥י

biḡ·ḏê

. אַלְמְנוּתָֽהּ׃

’al·mə·nū·ṯāh.

of her widowhood .

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח

way·yiš·laḥ

And sent

יְהוּדָ֜ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

גְּדִ֣י

gə·ḏî

הָֽעִזִּ֗ים

hā·‘iz·zîm,

בְּיַד֙

bə·yaḏ

by the hand

רֵעֵ֣הוּ

rê·‘ê·hū

､ הָֽעֲדֻלָּמִ֔י

hā·‘ă·ḏul·lā·mî,

the Adullamite ､

לָקַ֥חַת

lā·qa·ḥaṯ

הָעֵרָב֖וֹן

hā·‘ê·rā·ḇō·wn

מִיַּ֣ד

mî·yaḏ

– הָאִשָּׁ֑ה

hā·’iš·šāh;

of the woman –

וְלֹ֖א

wə·lō

but not

. מְצָאָֽהּ׃

mə·ṣā·’āh.

he did find her .

וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל

way·yiš·’al

And he asked

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אַנְשֵׁ֤י

’an·šê

the men

､ מְקֹמָהּ֙

mə·qō·māh

of that place ､

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

אַיֵּ֧ה

’ay·yêh

､ הַקְּדֵשָׁ֛ה

haq·qə·ḏê·šāh

the harlot ､

הִ֥וא

hî

בָעֵינַ֖יִם

ḇā·‘ê·na·yim

עַל־

‘al-

by

؟ הַדָּ֑רֶךְ

had·dā·reḵ;

the roadside ؟

､ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ

way·yō·mə·rū,

And they said ､

לֹא־

lō-

הָיְתָ֥ה

hā·yə·ṯāh

בָזֶ֖ה

ḇā·zeh

in this [place]

. קְדֵשָֽׁה׃

qə·ḏê·šāh.

וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙

way·yā·šāḇ

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ יְהוּדָ֔ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

､ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said ､

לֹ֣א

lō

､ מְצָאתִ֑יהָ

mə·ṣā·ṯî·hā;

I find her ､

וְגַ֨ם

wə·ḡam

and

אַנְשֵׁ֤י

’an·šê

the men

הַמָּקוֹם֙

ham·mā·qō·wm

of the place

､ אָֽמְר֔וּ

’ā·mə·rū,

said ､

לֹא־

lō-

no

הָיְתָ֥ה

hā·yə·ṯāh

בָזֶ֖ה

ḇā·zeh

in this [place]

. קְדֵשָֽׁה׃

qə·ḏê·šāh.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And said

､ יְהוּדָה֙

yə·hū·ḏāh

תִּֽקַּֽח־

tiq·qaḥ-

let her take [them]

､ לָ֔הּ

lāh,

for herself ､

פֶּ֖ן

pen

נִהְיֶ֣ה

nih·yeh

we be

. לָב֑וּז

lā·ḇūz;

､ הִנֵּ֤ה

hin·nêh

For ､

שָׁלַ֙חְתִּי֙

šā·laḥ·tî

הַגְּדִ֣י

hag·gə·ḏî

､ הַזֶּ֔ה

haz·zeh,

this ､

וְאַתָּ֖ה

wə·’at·tāh

and you

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. מְצָאתָֽהּ׃

mə·ṣā·ṯāh.

have found her .

､ וַיְהִ֣י ׀

way·hî

And it came to pass ､

כְּמִשְׁלֹ֣שׁ

kə·miš·lōš

about after three

חֳדָשִׁ֗ים

ḥo·ḏā·šîm,

וַיֻּגַּ֨ד

way·yug·gaḏ

､ לִֽיהוּדָ֤ה

lî·hū·ḏāh

､ לֵֽאמֹר֙

lê·mōr

זָֽנְתָה֙

zā·nə·ṯāh

has played the harlot

､ תָּמָ֣ר

tā·mār

– כַּלָּתֶ֔ךָ

kal·lā·ṯe·ḵā,

your daughter-in-law –

､ וְגַ֛ם

wə·ḡam

and furthermore ､

､ הִנֵּ֥ה

hin·nêh

הָרָ֖ה

hā·rāh

she [is] pregnant

. לִזְנוּנִ֑ים

liz·nū·nîm;

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר

way·yō·mer

､ יְהוּדָ֔ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

הוֹצִיא֖וּהָ

hō·w·ṣî·’ū·hā

. וְתִשָּׂרֵֽף׃

wə·ṯiś·śā·rêp̄.

and let her be burned .

הִ֣וא

hî

､ מוּצֵ֗את

mū·ṣêṯ,

[was] brought out ､

וְהִ֨יא

wə·hî

שָׁלְחָ֤ה

šā·lə·ḥāh

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ חָמִ֙יהָ֙

ḥā·mî·hā

her father-in-law ､

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

לְאִישׁ֙

lə·’îš

by the man

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

אֵ֣לֶּה

’êl·leh

､ לּ֔וֹ

lōw,

אָנֹכִ֖י

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

– הָרָ֑ה

hā·rāh;

[am] pregnant –

､ וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙

wat·tō·mer

And she said ､

､ הַכֶּר־

hak·ker-

､ נָ֔א

nā,

לְמִ֞י

lə·mî

to whom [is]

､ הַחֹתֶ֧מֶת

ha·ḥō·ṯe·meṯ

the signet ､

､ וְהַפְּתִילִ֛ים

wə·hap·pə·ṯî·lîm

and cord ､

וְהַמַּטֶּ֖ה

wə·ham·maṭ·ṭeh

. הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

hā·’êl·leh.

וַיַּכֵּ֣ר

way·yak·kêr

So acknowledged [them]

יְהוּדָ֗ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

､ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

way·yō·mer

and said ､

צָֽדְקָ֣ה

ṣā·ḏə·qāh

She is more righteous

מִמֶּ֔נִּי

mim·men·nî,

כִּֽי־

kî-

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּ֥ן

kên

לֹא־

lō-

not

נְתַתִּ֖יהָ

nə·ṯat·tî·hā

לְשֵׁלָ֣ה

lə·šê·lāh

. בְנִ֑י

ḇə·nî;

my son .

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

יָסַ֥ף

yā·sap̄

ע֖וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

. לְדַעְתָּֽה׃‪‬

lə·ḏa‘·tāh

The Birth of Pharez and Zarah

וַיְהִ֖י

way·hî

And it came to pass

בְּעֵ֣ת

bə·‘êṯ

at the time for

､ לִדְתָּ֑הּ

liḏ·tāh;

giving birth ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

that behold ､

תְאוֹמִ֖ים

ṯə·’ō·w·mîm

. בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃

bə·ḇiṭ·nāh.

､ וַיְהִ֥י

way·hî

And so it was ､

､ בְלִדְתָּ֖הּ

ḇə·liḏ·tāh

when she was giving birth ､

וַיִּתֶּן־

way·yit·ten-

that [the one] put out

יָ֑ד

yāḏ;

וַתִּקַּ֣ח

wat·tiq·qaḥ

and took

､ הַמְיַלֶּ֗דֶת

ham·yal·le·ḏeṯ,

the midwife ､

וַתִּקְשֹׁ֨ר

wat·tiq·šōr

and tied

עַל־

‘al-

on

יָד֤וֹ

yā·ḏōw

､ שָׁנִי֙

šā·nî

a scarlet [thread] ､

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

זֶ֖ה

zeh

יָצָ֥א

yā·ṣā

. רִאשֹׁנָֽה׃

ri·šō·nāh.

､ וַיְהִ֣י ׀

way·hî

And it came to pass ､

כְּמֵשִׁ֣יב

kə·mê·šîḇ

as he drew back

､ יָד֗וֹ

yā·ḏōw,

､ וְהִנֵּה֙

wə·hin·nêh

יָצָ֣א

yā·ṣā

– אָחִ֔יו

’ā·ḥîw,

his brother –

､ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

and she said ､

מַה־

mah-

؟ פָּרַ֖צְתָּ

pā·raṣ·tā

have you broken forth ؟

עָלֶ֣יךָ

‘ā·le·ḵā

､ פָּ֑רֶץ

pā·reṣ;

[is a] breach ､

וַיִּקְרָ֥א

way·yiq·rā

Therefore was called

שְׁמ֖וֹ

šə·mōw

. פָּֽרֶץ׃

pā·reṣ.

וְאַחַר֙

wə·’a·ḥar

יָצָ֣א

yā·ṣā

､ אָחִ֔יו

’ā·ḥîw,

his brother ､

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

עַל־

‘al-

on

יָד֖וֹ

yā·ḏōw

– הַשָּׁנִ֑י

haš·šā·nî;

the scarlet [thread] –

וַיִּקְרָ֥א

way·yiq·rā

שְׁמ֖וֹ

šə·mōw

. זָֽרַח׃

zā·raḥ.
