when heard [it]

הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

חִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ

ḥiz·qî·yā·hū,

וַיִּקְרַ֖ע

way·yiq·ra‘

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ בְּגָדָ֑יו

bə·ḡā·ḏāw;

his clothes ､

וַיִּתְכַּ֣ס

way·yiṯ·kas

and covered himself

､ בַּשָּׂ֔ק

baś·śāq,

with sackcloth ､

וַיָּבֹ֖א

way·yā·ḇō

בֵּ֥ית

bêṯ

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

וַ֠יִּשְׁלַח

way·yiš·laḥ

And he sent

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ אֶלְיָקִ֨ים

’el·yā·qîm

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

עַל־

‘al-

､ הַבַּ֜יִת

hab·ba·yiṯ

the household ､

וְאֵ֣ת ׀

wə·’êṯ

and

שֶׁבְנָ֣א

šeḇ·nā

､ הַסּוֹפֵ֗ר

has·sō·w·p̄êr,

the scribe ､

וְאֵת֙

wə·’êṯ

and

זִקְנֵ֣י

ziq·nê

הַכֹּהֲנִ֔ים

hak·kō·hă·nîm,

of the priests

מִתְכַּסִּ֖ים

miṯ·kas·sîm

､ בַּשַּׂקִּ֑ים

baś·śaq·qîm;

with sackcloth ､

אֶל־

to

יְשַֽׁעְיָ֥הוּ

of trouble ､

､ וְתוֹכֵחָ֛ה

and rebuke ､

– וּנְאָצָ֖ה

ū·nə·’ā·ṣāh

and blasphemy –

day [is]

הַזֶּ֑ה

haz·zeh;

כִּ֣י

kî

בָ֤אוּ

ḇā·’ū

בָנִים֙

ḇā·nîm

the sons

עַד־

‘aḏ-

to

､ מַשְׁבֵּ֔ר

maš·bêr,

וְכֹ֥חַ

wə·ḵō·aḥ

אַ֖יִן

’a·yin

[there is] no

. לְלֵדָֽה׃

lə·lê·ḏāh.

to bring them forth .

וְהוֹכִ֙יחַ֙

and will rebuke

בַּדְּבָרִ֔ים

bad·də·ḇā·rîm,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

. שָׁמַ֖ע

šā·ma‘

יְהוָ֣ה

אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ

וְנָשָׂ֣אתָ

therefore lift up

תְפִלָּ֔ה

ṯə·p̄il·lāh,

בְּעַ֥ד

bə·‘aḏ

הַשְּׁאֵרִ֖ית

haš·šə·’ê·rîṯ

. הַנִּמְצָאָֽה׃

han·nim·ṣā·’āh.

וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ

way·yā·ḇō·’ū,

עַבְדֵ֛י

‘aḇ·ḏê

הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ

ḥiz·qî·yā·hū

אֶל־

to

. יְשַׁעְיָֽהוּ׃

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר

And said

אֲלֵיהֶם֙

יְשַֽׁעְיָ֔הוּ

your master ､

do be afraid

הַדְּבָרִים֙

you have heard ､

אֲשֶׁ֧ר

with which

גִּדְּפ֛וּ

have blasphemed

נַעֲרֵ֥י

na·‘ă·rê

מֶלֶךְ־

me·leḵ-

of the king

אַשּׁ֖וּר

’aš·šūr

. אוֹתִֽי׃

’ō·w·ṯî.

Me .

הִנְנִ֨י

hin·nî

נוֹתֵ֥ן

I will send

בּוֹ֙

bōw

ר֔וּחַ

rū·aḥ,

וְשָׁמַ֥ע

wə·šā·ma‘

and he shall hear

､ שְׁמוּעָ֖ה

šə·mū·‘āh

a rumor ､

וְשָׁ֣ב

wə·šāḇ

אֶל־

’el-

to

– אַרְצ֑וֹ

’ar·ṣōw;

his own land –

וְהִפַּלְתִּ֥יו

wə·hip·pal·tîw

and I will cause him to fall

בַּחֶ֖רֶב

ba·ḥe·reḇ

by the sword

. בְּאַרְצֽוֹ׃

bə·’ar·ṣōw.

in his own land .

Sennacherib's Blasphemous Letter

you shall speak

אַשּׁ֛וּר

לְכָל־

to all

הָאֲרָצ֖וֹת

– לְהַחֲרִימָ֑ם

lə·ha·ḥă·rî·mām;

by utterly destroying them –

וְאַתָּ֖ה

wə·’at·tāh

and you

؟ תִּנָּצֵֽל׃

tin·nā·ṣêl.

shall be delivered ؟

הַהִצִּ֨ילוּ

ha·hiṣ·ṣî·lū

אוֹתָ֜ם

’ō·w·ṯām

אֱלֹהֵ֤י

the gods

הַגּוֹיִם֙

hag·gō·w·yim

of the nations

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

､ הִשְׁחִ֣יתוּ

have destroyed ､

have you raised

､ קּ֑וֹל

[your] voice ､

וַתִּשָּׂ֥א

and lifted up

on high ؟

עֵינֶ֖יךָ

by the multitude

רִכְבִּ֛י

I

עָלִ֛יתִי

מְר֥וֹם

to the height

､ הָרִ֖ים

hā·rîm

of the mountains ､

יַרְכְּתֵ֣י

yar·kə·ṯê

to the limits

– לְבָנ֑וֹן

lə·ḇā·nō·wn;

of Lebanon –

וְאֶכְרֹ֞ת

wə·’eḵ·rōṯ

and I will cut down

קוֹמַ֤ת

qō·w·maṯ

אֲרָזָיו֙

’ă·rā·zāw

מִבְחַ֣ר

miḇ·ḥar

בְּרֹשָׁ֔יו

bə·rō·šāw,

[And] its cypress trees

וְאָבוֹא֙

wə·’ā·ḇō·w

and I will enter

מְר֣וֹם

mə·rō·wm

､ קִצּ֔וֹ

qiṣ·ṣōw,

its farthest ､

יַ֖עַר

ya·‘ar

. כַּרְמִלּֽוֹ׃

kar·mil·lōw.

אֲנִ֥י

I

､ קַ֖רְתִּי

qar·tî

וְשָׁתִ֣יתִי

– מָ֑יִם

וְאַחְרִב֙

and I have dried up

בְּכַף־

with the soles

פְּעָמַ֔י

pə·‘ā·may,

of my feet

כֹּ֖ל

I have brought it to pass ､

וּתְהִ֗י

that you should be

לְהַשְׁא֛וֹת

נִצִּ֖ים

niṣ·ṣîm

עָרִ֥ים

. בְּצֻרֽוֹת׃

וְיֹֽשְׁבֵיהֶן֙

wə·yō·šə·ḇê·hen

Therefore their inhabitants [had]

קִצְרֵי־

qiṣ·rê-

､ יָ֔ד

yāḏ,

חַ֖תּוּ

ḥat·tū

they were dismayed

– וָבֹ֑שׁוּ

wā·ḇō·šū;

and confounded –

הָי֞וּ

hā·yū

עֵ֤שֶׂב

‘ê·śeḇ

[as] the grass

､ שָׂדֶה֙

śā·ḏeh

of the field ､

וִ֣ירַק

wî·raq

and the green

､ דֶּ֔שֶׁא

de·še,

herb ､

חֲצִ֣יר

ḥă·ṣîr

[As] the grass on

､ גַּגּ֔וֹת

gag·gō·wṯ,

the housetops ､

וּשְׁדֵמָ֖ה

ū·šə·ḏê·māh

and [grain] blighted

לִפְנֵ֥י

lip̄·nê

. קָמָֽה׃

qā·māh.

it is grown .

､ וְשִׁבְתְּךָ֛

wə·šiḇ·tə·ḵā

But your dwelling place ､

､ וְצֵאתְךָ֥

wə·ṣê·ṯə·ḵā

and Your going out ､

､ וּבוֹאֲךָ֖

ū·ḇō·w·’ă·ḵā

and your coming in ､

יָדָ֑עְתִּי

yā·ḏā·‘ə·tî;

וְאֵ֖ת

wə·’êṯ

and

הִֽתְרַגֶּזְךָ֥

hiṯ·rag·gez·ḵā

. אֵלָֽי׃

’ê·lāy.

יַ֚עַן

ya·‘an

הִתְרַגֶּזְךָ֣

hiṯ·rag·gez·ḵā

אֵלַ֔י

’ê·lay,

､ וְשַׁאֲנַנְךָ֖

wə·ša·’ă·nan·ḵā

and your tumult ､

עָלָ֣ה

‘ā·lāh

､ בְאָזְנָ֑י

ḇə·’ā·zə·nāy;

to My ears ､

וְשַׂמְתִּ֨י

wə·śam·tî

therefore I will put

חַחִ֜י

ḥa·ḥî

､ בְּאַפֶּ֗ךָ

bə·’ap·pe·ḵā,

in your nose ､

וּמִתְגִּי֙

ū·miṯ·gî

and My bridle

､ בִּשְׂפָתֶ֔יךָ

biś·p̄ā·ṯe·ḵā,

in your lips ､

וַהֲשִׁ֣יבֹתִ֔יךָ

wa·hă·šî·ḇō·ṯî·ḵā,

and I will turn you back

בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ

bad·de·reḵ

by the way

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

בָּ֥אתָ

bā·ṯā

. בָּֽהּ׃

וְזֶה־

And this [shall be]

לְּךָ֣

to you

הָא֔וֹת

hā·’ō·wṯ,

אָכ֤וֹל

’ā·ḵō·wl

הַשָּׁנָה֙

haš·šā·nāh

– סָפִ֔יחַ

sā·p̄î·aḥ,

such as grows of itself –

וּבַשָּׁנָ֥ה

ū·ḇaš·šā·nāh

and year

הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית

haš·šê·nîṯ

– שָׁחִ֑יס

šā·ḥîs;

what springs from the same –

וּבַשָּׁנָ֣ה

ū·ḇaš·šā·nāh

and in year

הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗ית

haš·šə·lî·šîṯ,

זִרְע֧וּ

zir·‘ū

､ וְקִצְר֛וּ

wə·qiṣ·rū

and reap ､

וְנִטְע֥וּ

wə·niṭ·‘ū

､ כְרָמִ֖ים

ḵə·rā·mîm

[ואכול]

wə·’ā·ḵō·wl

-

(וְאִכְל֥וּ)

wə·’iḵ·lū

and eat

. פִרְיָֽם׃

p̄ir·yām.

the fruit of them .

וְיָ֨סְפָ֜ה

wə·yā·sə·p̄āh

And shall again

פְּלֵיטַ֧ת

pə·lê·ṭaṯ

who have escaped

בֵּית־

bêṯ-

of the house

יְהוּדָ֛ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

הַנִּשְׁאָרָ֖ה

han·niš·’ā·rāh

שֹׁ֣רֶשׁ

šō·reš

､ לְמָ֑טָּה

lə·māṭ·ṭāh;

וְעָשָׂ֥ה

wə·‘ā·śāh

and bear

פְרִ֖י

p̄ə·rî

. לְמָֽעְלָה׃

lə·mā·‘ə·lāh.

כִּ֤י

kî

מִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙

mî·rū·šā·lim

out of Jerusalem

תֵּצֵ֣א

tê·ṣê

､ שְׁאֵרִ֔ית

šə·’ê·rîṯ,

וּפְלֵיטָ֖ה

ū·p̄ə·lê·ṭāh

and those who escape

מֵהַ֣ר

mê·har

– צִיּ֑וֹן

ṣî·yō·wn;

Zion –

קִנְאַ֛ת

qin·’aṯ

the zeal

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

צְבָא֖וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ

תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־

ta·‘ă·śeh-

will do

. זֹּֽאת׃

יִשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ

עֳלֶ֖יהָ‪‬

. סֹלְלָֽה׃

sō·lə·lāh.

a siege mound .

בַּדֶּ֥רֶךְ

By the way

אֲשֶׁר־

he came ､

בָּ֣הּ

､ יָשׁ֑וּב

shall he return ､

וְאֶל־

､ הָעִ֥יר

וְגַנּוֹתִ֛י

For I will defend

עַל־

‘al-

הָעִ֥יר

הַזֹּ֖את

haz·zōṯ

לְהֽוֹשִׁיעָ֑הּ

lə·hō·wō·šî·‘āh;

to save it

､ לְמַֽעֲנִ֔י

lə·ma·‘ă·nî,

for My own sake ､

. וּלְמַ֖עַן

ū·lə·ma·‘an

דָּוִ֥ד

. עַבְדִּֽי׃

､ וַיֵּצֵ֣א ׀

And went out ､

מַלְאַ֣ךְ

mal·’aḵ

יְהוָ֗ה

וַיַּכֶּה֙

בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה

bə·ma·ḥă·nêh

in the camp

אַשּׁ֔וּר

’aš·šūr,

מֵאָ֛ה

mê·’āh

וּשְׁמֹנִ֥ים

ū·šə·mō·nîm

וַחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה

wa·ḥă·miš·šāh

and five

– אָ֑לֶף

’ā·lep̄;

וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣ימוּ

way·yaš·kî·mū

and when [people] arose early

､ בַבֹּ֔קֶר

ḇab·bō·qer,

in the morning ､

､ וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

and there were ､

כֻלָּ֖ם

ḵul·lām

פְּגָרִ֥ים

pə·ḡā·rîm

. מֵתִֽים׃

mê·ṯîm.

､ וַיִּסַּ֣ע

way·yis·sa‘

So departed ､

וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ

way·yê·leḵ,

､ וַיָּ֖שָׁב

way·yā·šāḇ

and returned [home] ､

סַנְחֵרִ֣יב

san·ḥê·rîḇ

מֶֽלֶךְ־

me·leḵ-

אַשּׁ֑וּר

’aš·šūr;

וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב

way·yê·šeḇ

. בְּנִֽינְוֵֽה׃

bə·nî·nə·wêh.

､ וַיְהִי֩

way·hî

And it came to pass ､

ה֨וּא

as he

מִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֜ה

miš·ta·ḥă·weh

בֵּ֣ית ׀

bêṯ

in the house

נִסְרֹ֣ךְ

nis·rōḵ

､ אֱלֹהָ֗יו

’ĕ·lō·hāw,

וְֽאַדְרַמֶּ֨לֶךְ

wə·’aḏ·ram·me·leḵ

that Adrammelech

וְשַׂרְאֶ֤צֶר

wə·śar·’e·ṣer

בָּנָיו֙

bā·nāw

הִכֻּ֣הוּ

hik·ku·hū

struck him down

– בַחֶ֔רֶב

ḇa·ḥe·reḇ,

with the sword –

וְהֵ֥מָּה

wə·hêm·māh

and they

נִמְלְט֖וּ

nim·lə·ṭū

אֶ֣רֶץ

’e·reṣ

. אֲרָרָ֑ט

’ă·rā·rāṭ;

וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ

way·yim·lōḵ

אֵֽסַר־

’ê·sar-

חַדֹּ֥ן

ḥad·dōn

בְּנ֖וֹ

bə·nōw

. תַּחְתָּֽיו׃
