The Song of the Vineyard

אָשִׁ֤ירָה

’ā·šî·rāh

נָּא֙

nā

לִֽידִידִ֔י

lî·ḏî·ḏî,

to my Well-beloved

שִׁירַ֥ת

šî·raṯ

דּוֹדִ֖י

dō·w·ḏî

. לְכַרְמ֑וֹ

lə·ḵar·mōw;

regarding His vineyard .

כֶּ֛רֶם

ke·rem

הָיָ֥ה

hā·yāh

לִֽידִידִ֖י

lî·ḏî·ḏî

My Well-beloved

בְּקֶ֥רֶן

bə·qe·ren

On a hill

– בֶּן־

ben-

on a fertile –

. שָֽׁמֶן׃

šā·men.

very fruitful .

וַֽיְעַזְּקֵ֣הוּ

way·‘az·zə·qê·hū

And He dug it up

וַֽיְסַקְּלֵ֗הוּ

way·saq·qə·lê·hū,

and cleared out its stones

וַיִּטָּעֵ֙הוּ֙

way·yiṭ·ṭā·‘ê·hū

and planted it

､ שֹׂרֵ֔ק

śō·rêq,

with the choicest vine ､

וַיִּ֤בֶן

way·yi·ḇen

and He built

מִגְדָּל֙

miḡ·dāl

בְּתוֹכ֔וֹ

bə·ṯō·w·ḵōw,

וְגַם־

wə·ḡam-

and also

יֶ֖קֶב

ye·qeḇ

חָצֵ֣ב

ḥā·ṣêḇ

בּ֑וֹ

bōw;

in it

וַיְקַ֛ו

way·qaw

so He expected [it]

לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

､ עֲנָבִ֖ים

‘ă·nā·ḇîm

[good] grapes ､

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ

way·ya·‘aś

but it brought forth

. בְּאֻשִֽׁים׃

bə·’u·šîm.

､ וְעַתָּ֛ה

wə·‘at·tāh

Now ､

יוֹשֵׁ֥ב

yō·wō·šêḇ

､ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם

yə·rū·šā·lim

of Jerusalem ､

וְאִ֣ישׁ

wə·’îš

and men

､ יְהוּדָ֑ה

yə·hū·ḏāh;

of Judah ､

､ שִׁפְטוּ־

šip̄·ṭū-

､ נָ֕א

nā

בֵּינִ֖י

bê·nî

וּבֵ֥ין

ū·ḇên

and

. כַּרְמִֽי׃

kar·mî.

מַה־

mah-

לַּעֲשׂ֥וֹת

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

could have been done

עוֹד֙

‘ō·wḏ

､ לְכַרְמִ֔י

lə·ḵar·mî,

to My vineyard ､

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

that not

עָשִׂ֖יתִי

‘ā·śî·ṯî

בּ֑וֹ

bōw;

in it

､ מַדּ֧וּעַ

mad·dū·a‘

why then when ､

קִוֵּ֛יתִי

qiw·wê·ṯî

I expected [it]

לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת

la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

､ עֲנָבִ֖ים

‘ă·nā·ḇîm

[good] grapes ､

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ

way·ya·‘aś

and did it bring forth

؟ בְּאֻשִֽׁים׃

bə·’u·šîm.

וְעַתָּה֙

wə·‘at·tāh

אוֹדִֽיעָה־

’ō·w·ḏî·‘āh-

נָּ֣א

nā

אֶתְכֶ֔ם

’eṯ·ḵem,

אֵ֛ת

’êṯ

-

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

אֲנִ֥י

’ă·nî

I

עֹשֶׂ֖ה

‘ō·śeh

will do

– לְכַרְמִ֑י

lə·ḵar·mî;

to My vineyard –

הָסֵ֤ר

hā·sêr

I will take away

מְשׂוּכָּתוֹ֙

mə·śū·kā·ṯōw

וְהָיָ֣ה

wə·hā·yāh

and it shall be

– לְבָעֵ֔ר

lə·ḇā·‘êr,

פָּרֹ֥ץ

pā·rōṣ

[And] break down

גְּדֵר֖וֹ

gə·ḏê·rōw

וְהָיָ֥ה

wə·hā·yāh

and it shall be

– לְמִרְמָֽס׃

lə·mir·mās.

trampled down –

וַאֲשִׁיתֵ֣הוּ

wa·’ă·šî·ṯê·hū

and I will lay it

– בָתָ֗ה

ḇā·ṯāh,

לֹ֤א

lō

not

יִזָּמֵר֙

yiz·zā·mêr

it shall be pruned

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

or

– יֵעָדֵ֔ר

yê·‘ā·ḏêr,

dug –

וְעָלָ֥ה

wə·‘ā·lāh

but there shall come up

שָׁמִ֖יר

šā·mîr

– וָשָׁ֑יִת

wā·šā·yiṯ;

and thorns –

וְעַ֤ל

wə·‘al

and also

הֶעָבִים֙

he·‘ā·ḇîm

אֲצַוֶּ֔ה

’ă·ṣaw·weh,

I will command

מֵהַמְטִ֥יר

mê·ham·ṭîr

that they rain no

עָלָ֖יו

‘ā·lāw

on it

. מָטָֽר׃

mā·ṭār.

כִּ֣י

kî

כֶ֜רֶם

ḵe·rem

יְהוָ֤ה

Yah·weh

צְבָאוֹת֙

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ

בֵּ֣ית

bêṯ

[is] the house

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

of Israel ､

וְאִ֣ישׁ

wə·’îš

and the men

יְהוּדָ֔ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

. נְטַ֖ע

nə·ṭa‘

שַׁעֲשׁוּעָ֑יו

ša·‘ă·šū·‘āw;

Are His pleasant

וַיְקַ֤ו

way·qaw

and He looked

､ לְמִשְׁפָּט֙

lə·miš·pāṭ

for justice ､

וְהִנֵּ֣ה

wə·hin·nêh

– מִשְׂפָּ֔ח

miś·pāḥ,

､ לִצְדָקָ֖ה

liṣ·ḏā·qāh

for righteousness ､

וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

. צְעָקָֽה׃

ṣə·‘ā·qāh.

a cry [for help] .

Woes to the Wicked

ה֗וֹי

hō·w,

מַגִּיעֵ֥י

mag·gî·‘ê

to those who join

בַ֙יִת֙

ḇa·yiṯ

､ בְּבַ֔יִת

bə·ḇa·yiṯ,

to house ､

שָׂדֶ֥ה

śā·ḏeh

､ בְשָׂדֶ֖ה

ḇə·śā·ḏeh

to field ､

יַקְרִ֑יבוּ

yaq·rî·ḇū;

עַ֚ד

‘aḏ

אֶ֣פֶס

’e·p̄es

[there is] no

､ מָק֔וֹם

mā·qō·wm,

וְהֽוּשַׁבְתֶּ֥ם

wə·hū·šaḇ·tem

and where they may dwell

לְבַדְּכֶ֖ם

lə·ḇad·də·ḵem

בְּקֶ֥רֶב

bə·qe·reḇ

in the midst

! הָאָֽרֶץ׃

hā·’ā·reṣ.

of the land !

בְּאָזְנָ֖י

bə·’ā·zə·nāy

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

､ צְבָא֑וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ;

of hosts ､

אִם־

’im-

לֹ֞א

lō

בָּתִּ֤ים

bāt·tîm

רַבִּים֙

rab·bîm

､ לְשַׁמָּ֣ה

lə·šam·māh

יִֽהְי֔וּ

yih·yū,

גְּדֹלִ֥ים

gə·ḏō·lîm

､ וְטוֹבִ֖ים

wə·ṭō·w·ḇîm

and beautiful ones ､

מֵאֵ֥ין

mê·’ên

. יוֹשֵֽׁב׃

yō·wō·šêḇ.

､ כִּ֗י

kî,

For ､

עֲשֶׂ֙רֶת֙

‘ă·śe·reṯ

צִמְדֵּי־

ṣim·dê-

כֶ֔רֶם

ḵe·rem,

יַעֲשׂ֖וּ

ya·‘ă·śū

､ בַּ֣ת

baṯ

bath ､

אֶחָ֑ת

’e·ḥāṯ;

וְזֶ֥רַע

wə·ze·ra‘

and seed

חֹ֖מֶר

ḥō·mer

יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה

ya·‘ă·śeh

. אֵיפָֽה׃

’ê·p̄āh.

מַשְׁכִּימֵ֥י

maš·kî·mê

to those who rise early

､ בַבֹּ֖קֶר

ḇab·bō·qer

in the morning ､

– שֵׁכָ֣ר

šê·ḵār

intoxicating drink –

יִרְדֹּ֑פוּ

yir·dō·p̄ū;

[That] they may follow

מְאַחֲרֵ֣י

mə·’a·ḥă·rê

､ בַנֶּ֔שֶׁף

ḇan·ne·šep̄,

until night ､

יַ֖יִן

ya·yin

. יַדְלִיקֵֽם׃

yaḏ·lî·qêm.

inflames them .

וְהָיָ֨ה

wə·hā·yāh

And are

､ כִנּ֜וֹר

ḵin·nō·wr

the harp ､

､ וָנֶ֗בֶל

wā·ne·ḇel,

and the strings ､

､ תֹּ֧ף

tōp̄

the tambourine ､

､ וְחָלִ֛יל

wə·ḥā·lîl

and flute ､

､ וָיַ֖יִן

wā·ya·yin

and wine ､

– מִשְׁתֵּיהֶ֑ם

miš·tê·hem;

in their feasts –

וְאֵ֨ת

wə·’êṯ

but

פֹּ֤עַל

pō·‘al

the work

､ יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

of Yahweh ､

לֹ֣א

lō

not

יַבִּ֔יטוּ

yab·bî·ṭū,

וּמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה

ū·ma·‘ă·śêh

and the operation

יָדָ֖יו

yā·ḏāw

לֹ֥א

lō

. רָאֽוּ׃

rā·’ū.

לָכֵ֛ן

lā·ḵên

､ גָּלָ֥ה

gā·lāh

have gone into captivity ､

עַמִּ֖י

‘am·mî

מִבְּלִי־

mib·bə·lî-

because [they have] no

– דָ֑עַת

ḏā·‘aṯ;

וּכְבוֹדוֹ֙

ū·ḵə·ḇō·w·ḏōw

and their honorable

מְתֵ֣י

mə·ṯê

､ רָעָ֔ב

rā·‘āḇ,

[are] famished ､

וַהֲמוֹנ֖וֹ

wa·hă·mō·w·nōw

and their multitude

צִחֵ֥ה

ṣi·ḥêh

. צָמָֽא׃

ṣā·mā.

with thirst .

לָכֵ֗ן

lā·ḵên,

הִרְחִ֤יבָה

hir·ḥî·ḇāh

שְּׁאוֹל֙

šə·’ō·wl

､ נַפְשָׁ֔הּ

nap̄·šāh,

וּפָעֲרָ֥ה

ū·p̄ā·‘ă·rāh

פִ֖יהָ

p̄î·hā

לִבְלִי־

liḇ·lî-

– חֹ֑ק

ḥōq;

וְיָרַ֨ד

wə·yā·raḏ

and shall descend

､ הֲדָרָ֧הּ

hă·ḏā·rāh

their glory ､

､ וַהֲמוֹנָ֛הּ

wa·hă·mō·w·nāh

and their multitude ､

､ וּשְׁאוֹנָ֖הּ

ū·šə·’ō·w·nāh

and their pomp ､

､ וְעָלֵ֥ז

wə·‘ā·lêz

and he who is jubilant ､

. בָּֽהּ׃

bāh.

into it .

､ וַיִּשַּׁ֥ח

way·yiš·šaḥ

And shall be brought down ､

אָדָ֖ם

’ā·ḏām

､ וַיִּשְׁפַּל־

way·yiš·pal-

and shall be humbled ､

אִ֑ישׁ

’îš;

וְעֵינֵ֥י

wə·‘ê·nê

and the eyes

גְבֹהִ֖ים

ḡə·ḇō·hîm

. תִּשְׁפַּֽלְנָה׃

tiš·pal·nāh.

shall be humbled .

וַיִּגְבַּ֛ה‪‬

way·yiḡ·bah

But shall be exalted

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

צְבָא֖וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ

､ בַּמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט

bam·miš·pāṭ;

in judgment ､

וְהָאֵל֙

wə·hā·’êl

and God

הַקָּד֔וֹשׁ

haq·qā·ḏō·wōš,

נִקְדָּ֖שׁ

niq·dāš

shall be consecrated

. בִּצְדָקָֽה׃

biṣ·ḏā·qāh.

in righteousness .

וְרָע֥וּ

wə·rā·‘ū

כְבָשִׂ֖ים

ḵə·ḇā·śîm

､ כְּדָבְרָ֑ם

kə·ḏā·ḇə·rām;

in their pasture ､

וְחָרְב֥וֹת

wə·ḥā·rə·ḇō·wṯ

and in the waste places

מֵחִ֖ים

mê·ḥîm

of the fat ones

גָּרִ֥ים

gā·rîm

. יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃

yō·ḵê·lū.

ה֛וֹי

hō·w

מֹשְׁכֵ֥י

mō·šə·ḵê

to those who draw

הֶֽעָוֺ֖ן

he·‘ā·wōn

בְּחַבְלֵ֣י

bə·ḥaḇ·lê

with cords

､ הַשָּׁ֑וְא

haš·šāw;

of vanity ､

– וְכַעֲב֥וֹת

wə·ḵa·‘ă·ḇō·wṯ

and as if with a rope –

הָעֲגָלָ֖ה

hā·‘ă·ḡā·lāh

. חַטָּאָֽה׃

ḥaṭ·ṭā·’āh.

､ הָאֹמְרִ֗ים

hā·’ō·mə·rîm,

､ יְמַהֵ֧ר ׀

yə·ma·hêr

let Him make speed ､

יָחִ֛ישָׁה

yā·ḥî·šāh

[and] hasten

､ מַעֲשֵׂ֖הוּ

ma·‘ă·śê·hū

לְמַ֣עַן

lə·ma·‘an

נִרְאֶ֑ה

nir·’eh;

we may see [it]

וְתִקְרַ֣ב

wə·ṯiq·raḇ

and let draw near

､ וְתָב֗וֹאָה

wə·ṯā·ḇō·w·’āh,

and come ､

עֲצַ֛ת

‘ă·ṣaṯ

קְד֥וֹשׁ

qə·ḏō·wōš

of the Holy one

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

. וְנֵדָֽעָה׃

wə·nê·ḏā·‘āh.

that we may know [it] .

to those who call

לָרַ֛ע

lā·ra‘

､ ט֖וֹב

ṭō·wḇ

good ､

וְלַטּ֣וֹב

wə·laṭ·ṭō·wḇ

and good

– רָ֑ע

rā‘;

evil –

שָׂמִ֨ים

śā·mîm

חֹ֤שֶׁךְ

ḥō·šeḵ

､ לְאוֹר֙

lə·’ō·wr

וְא֣וֹר

wə·’ō·wr

– לְחֹ֔שֶׁךְ

lə·ḥō·šeḵ,

for darkness –

שָׂמִ֥ים

śā·mîm

מַ֛ר

mar

､ לְמָת֖וֹק

lə·mā·ṯō·wq

וּמָת֥וֹק

ū·mā·ṯō·wq

! לְמָֽר׃

lə·mār.

חֲכָמִ֣ים

ḥă·ḵā·mîm

to [those who are] wise

､ בְּעֵֽינֵיהֶ֑ם

bə·‘ê·nê·hem;

in their own eyes ､

וְנֶ֥גֶד

wə·ne·ḡeḏ

and in

! פְּנֵיהֶ֖ם

pə·nê·hem

their own sight !

. נְבֹנִֽים׃

nə·ḇō·nîm.

ה֕וֹי

hō·w

גִּבּוֹרִ֖ים

gib·bō·w·rîm

לִשְׁתּ֣וֹת

liš·tō·wṯ

､ יָ֑יִן

yā·yin;

wine ､

וְאַנְשֵׁי־

wə·’an·šê-

and [Woe] to men

חַ֖יִל

ḥa·yil

לִמְסֹ֥ךְ

lim·sōḵ

– שֵׁכָֽר׃

šê·ḵār.

intoxicating drink –

מַצְדִּיקֵ֥י

maṣ·dî·qê

רָשָׁ֖ע

rā·šā‘

עֵ֣קֶב

‘ê·qeḇ

､ שֹׁ֑חַד

šō·ḥaḏ;

a bribe ､

וְצִדְקַ֥ת

wə·ṣiḏ·qaṯ

and justice from

צַדִּיקִ֖ים

ṣad·dî·qîm

the righteous man

יָסִ֥ירוּ

yā·sî·rū

. מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

mim·men·nū.

כֶּאֱכֹ֨ל

ke·’ĕ·ḵōl

､ קַ֜שׁ

qaš

the stubble ､

לְשׁ֣וֹן

lə·šō·wn

אֵ֗שׁ

’êš,

the fire

､ וַחֲשַׁ֤שׁ

wa·ḥă·šaš

and the chaff ､

לֶֽהָבָה֙

le·hā·ḇāh

יִרְפֶּ֔ה

yir·peh,

שָׁרְשָׁם֙

šā·rə·šām

[So] their root

､ כַּמָּ֣ק

kam·māq

as rottenness ､

יִֽהְיֶ֔ה

yih·yeh,

will be

וּפִרְחָ֖ם

ū·p̄ir·ḥām

and their blossom

– כָּאָבָ֣ק

kā·’ā·ḇāq

יַעֲלֶ֑ה

ya·‘ă·leh;

כִּ֣י

kî

מָאֲס֗וּ

mā·’ă·sū,

they have rejected

אֵ֚ת

’êṯ

-

תּוֹרַת֙

tō·w·raṯ

the law

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

､ צְבָא֔וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ,

of hosts ､

וְאֵ֛ת

wə·’êṯ

and

אִמְרַ֥ת

’im·raṯ

the word

קְדֽוֹשׁ־

qə·ḏō·wōš-

of the Holy one

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

. נִאֵֽצוּ׃

ni·’ê·ṣū.

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּ֡ן

kên

חָרָה֩

ḥā·rāh

אַף־

’ap̄-

יְהוָ֨ה

Yah·weh

､ בְּעַמּ֜וֹ

bə·‘am·mōw

against His people ､

וַיֵּ֣ט

way·yêṭ

and He has stretched out

יָד֧וֹ

yā·ḏōw

עָלָ֣יו

‘ā·lāw

וַיַּכֵּ֗הוּ

way·yak·kê·hū,

and stricken them

､ וַֽיִּרְגְּזוּ֙

way·yir·gə·zū

and trembled ､

הֶֽהָרִ֔ים

he·hā·rîm,

וַתְּהִ֧י

wat·tə·hî

and [were]

נִבְלָתָ֛ם

niḇ·lā·ṯām

their carcasses

כַּסּוּחָ֖ה

kas·sū·ḥāh

בְּקֶ֣רֶב

bə·qe·reḇ

in the midst

. חוּצ֑וֹת

ḥū·ṣō·wṯ;

of the streets .

בְּכָל־

bə·ḵāl

זֹאת֙

zōṯ

לֹא־

lō-

not

､ שָׁ֣ב

šāḇ

is turned away ､

אַפּ֔וֹ

’ap·pōw,

וְע֖וֹד

wə·‘ō·wḏ

יָד֥וֹ

yā·ḏōw

. נְטוּיָֽה׃

nə·ṭū·yāh.

[is] stretched out .

וְנָֽשָׂא־

wə·nā·śā-

And He will lift up

נֵ֤ס

nês

לַגּוֹיִם֙

lag·gō·w·yim

to the nations

､ מֵרָח֔וֹק

mê·rā·ḥō·wq,

וְשָׁ֥רַק

wə·šā·raq

and will whistle

ל֖וֹ

lōw

מִקְצֵ֣ה

miq·ṣêh

– הָאָ֑רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ;

of the earth –

､ וְהִנֵּ֥ה

wə·hin·nêh

and surely ､

מְהֵרָ֖ה

mə·hê·rāh

with speed

קַ֥ל

qal

. יָבֽוֹא׃

yā·ḇō·w.

they shall come .

אֵין־

’ên-

עָיֵ֤ף

‘ā·yêp̄

will be weary

וְאֵין־

wə·’ên-

and none

כּוֹשֵׁל֙

kō·wō·šêl

בּ֔וֹ

bōw,

לֹ֥א

lō

יָנ֖וּם

yā·nūm

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

or

– יִישָׁ֑ן

yî·šān;

וְלֹ֤א

wə·lō

､ נִפְתַּח֙

nip̄·taḥ

will be loosed ､

אֵז֣וֹר

’ê·zō·wr

the belt on

חֲלָצָ֔יו

ḥă·lā·ṣāw,

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

נִתַּ֖ק

nit·taq

שְׂר֥וֹךְ

śə·rō·wḵ

. נְעָלָֽיו׃

nə·‘ā·lāw.

of their sandals .

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

חִצָּיו֙

ḥiṣ·ṣāw

､ שְׁנוּנִ֔ים

šə·nū·nîm,

[are] sharp ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

קַשְּׁתֹתָ֖יו

qaš·šə·ṯō·ṯāw

､ דְּרֻכ֑וֹת

də·ru·ḵō·wṯ;

bent ､

פַּרְס֤וֹת

par·sō·wṯ

סוּסָיו֙

sū·sāw

כַּצַּ֣ר

kaṣ·ṣar

נֶחְשָׁ֔בוּ

neḥ·šā·ḇū,

will seem

וְגַלְגִּלָּ֖יו

wə·ḡal·gil·lāw

and their wheels

. כַּסּוּפָֽה׃

kas·sū·p̄āh.

like a whirlwind .

שְׁאָגָ֥ה

šə·’ā·ḡāh

Roaring [will be]

ל֖וֹ

lōw

､ כַּלָּבִ֑יא

kal·lā·ḇî;

like a lion ､

[ושאג]

wə·šā·’aḡ

-

(יִשְׁאַ֨ג)

yiš·’aḡ

– כַּכְּפִירִ֤ים

kak·kə·p̄î·rîm

like young lions –

､ וְיִנְהֹם֙

wə·yin·hōm

and Yes they will roar ､

וְיֹאחֵ֣ז

wə·yō·ḥêz

､ טֶ֔רֶף

ṭe·rep̄,

of the prey ､

､ וְיַפְלִ֖יט

wə·yap̄·lîṭ

and they will carry [it] away safely ､

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

and no one

. מַצִּֽיל׃

maṣ·ṣîl.

will deliver .

וְיִנְהֹ֥ם

wə·yin·hōm

And they will roar

עָלָ֛יו

‘ā·lāw

בַּיּ֥וֹם

bay·yō·wm

in day

הַה֖וּא

ha·hū

כְּנַהֲמַת־

kə·na·hă·maṯ-

Like the roaring

. יָ֑ם

yām;

of the sea .

וְנִבַּ֤ט

wə·nib·baṭ

And if [one] looks

､ לָאָ֙רֶץ֙

lā·’ā·reṣ

to the land ､

וְהִנֵּה־

wə·hin·nêh-

חֹ֔שֶׁךְ

ḥō·šeḵ,

､ צַ֣ר

ṣar
