Isaiah's Vision of the Lord in His Glory

בִּשְׁנַת־

biš·naṯ-

In the year

מוֹת֙

mō·wṯ

הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

עֻזִּיָּ֔הוּ

‘uz·zî·yā·hū,

וָאֶרְאֶ֧ה

wā·’er·’eh

and I saw

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אֲדֹנָ֛י

’ă·ḏō·nāy

the Lord

יֹשֵׁ֥ב

yō·šêḇ

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ כִּסֵּ֖א

kis·sê

a throne ､

רָ֣ם

rām

､ וְנִשָּׂ֑א

wə·niś·śā;

and lifted up ､

וְשׁוּלָ֖יו

wə·šū·lāw

and the train of His [robe]

מְלֵאִ֥ים

mə·lê·’îm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הַהֵיכָֽל׃

ha·hê·ḵāl.

the temple .

– שְׂרָפִ֨ים

śə·rā·p̄îm

עֹמְדִ֤ים ׀

‘ō·mə·ḏîm

מִמַּ֙עַל֙

mim·ma·‘al

ל֔וֹ

lōw,

it

שֵׁ֧שׁ

šêš

כְּנָפַ֛יִם

kə·nā·p̄a·yim

שֵׁ֥שׁ

šêš

כְּנָפַ֖יִם

kə·nā·p̄a·yim

לְאֶחָ֑ד

lə·’e·ḥāḏ;

בִּשְׁתַּ֣יִם ׀

biš·ta·yim

with two

יְכַסֶּ֣ה

yə·ḵas·seh

､ פָנָ֗יו

p̄ā·nāw,

וּבִשְׁתַּ֛יִם

ū·ḇiš·ta·yim

and with two

יְכַסֶּ֥ה

yə·ḵas·seh

､ רַגְלָ֖יו

raḡ·lāw

וּבִשְׁתַּ֥יִם

ū·ḇiš·ta·yim

and with two

. יְעוֹפֵֽף׃

yə·‘ō·w·p̄êp̄.

he flew .

וְקָרָ֨א

wə·qā·rā

､ זֶ֤ה

zeh

this [one] ､

אֶל־

’el-

to

זֶה֙

zeh

､ וְאָמַ֔ר

wə·’ā·mar,

and said ､

קָד֧וֹשׁ ׀

qā·ḏō·wōš

קָד֛וֹשׁ

qā·ḏō·wōš

､ קָד֖וֹשׁ

qā·ḏō·wōš

holy ､

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

､ צְבָא֑וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ;

of hosts ､

מְלֹ֥א

mə·lō

[is] full

כָל־

ḵāl

of all

הָאָ֖רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

. כְּבוֹדֽוֹ׃

kə·ḇō·w·ḏōw.

וַיָּנֻ֙עוּ֙

way·yā·nu·‘ū

And were shaken

אַמּ֣וֹת

’am·mō·wṯ

הַסִּפִּ֔ים

has·sip·pîm,

of the door

מִקּ֖וֹל

miq·qō·wl

by the voice

､ הַקּוֹרֵ֑א

haq·qō·w·rê;

of him who cried out ､

וְהַבַּ֖יִת

wə·hab·ba·yiṯ

and the house

יִמָּלֵ֥א

yim·mā·lê

was filled with

. עָשָֽׁן׃

‘ā·šān.

וָאֹמַ֞ר

wā·’ō·mar

So I said

אֽוֹי־

’ō·w-

Woe [is]

לִ֣י

lî

me

כִֽי־

ḵî-

– נִדְמֵ֗יתִי

niḏ·mê·ṯî,

I am undone –

כִּ֣י

kî

אִ֤ישׁ

’îš

טְמֵֽא־

ṭə·mê-

､ שְׂפָתַ֙יִם֙

śə·p̄ā·ṯa·yim

lips ､

אָנֹ֔כִי

’ā·nō·ḵî,

I [am]

וּבְתוֹךְ֙

ū·ḇə·ṯō·wḵ

and in the midst

עַם־

‘am-

טְמֵ֣א

ṭə·mê

– שְׂפָתַ֔יִם

śə·p̄ā·ṯa·yim,

lips –

אָנֹכִ֖י

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

יוֹשֵׁ֑ב

yō·wō·šêḇ;

כִּ֗י

kî,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ

ham·me·leḵ

the King ､

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

צְבָא֖וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ

רָא֥וּ

rā·’ū

. עֵינָֽי׃

‘ê·nāy.

my eyes .

וַיָּ֣עָף

way·yā·‘āp̄

And flew

אֵלַ֗י

’ê·lay,

to me

אֶחָד֙

’e·ḥāḏ

מִן־

min-

of

הַשְּׂרָפִ֔ים

haś·śə·rā·p̄îm,

､ וּבְיָד֖וֹ

ū·ḇə·yā·ḏōw

and in his hand ､

רִצְפָּ֑ה

riṣ·pāh;

having a live coal

בְּמֶ֨לְקַחַ֔יִם

bə·mel·qa·ḥa·yim,

with the tongs

לָקַ֖ח

lā·qaḥ

[which] he had taken

מֵעַ֥ל

mê·‘al

– הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃

ham·miz·bê·aḥ.

the altar –

וַיַּגַּ֣ע

way·yag·ga‘

and he touched [with it]

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ פִּ֔י

pî,

my mouth ､

､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and said ､

､ הִנֵּ֛ה

hin·nêh

נָגַ֥ע

nā·ḡa‘

זֶ֖ה

zeh

עַל־

‘al-

– שְׂפָתֶ֑יךָ

śə·p̄ā·ṯe·ḵā;

､ וְסָ֣ר

wə·sār

and is taken away ､

עֲוֺנֶ֔ךָ

‘ă·wō·ne·ḵā,

וְחַטָּאתְךָ֖

wə·ḥaṭ·ṭā·ṯə·ḵā

. תְּכֻפָּֽר׃

tə·ḵup·pār.

Isaiah's Commission

וָאֶשְׁמַ֞ע

wā·’eš·ma‘

And I heard

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

ק֤וֹל

qō·wl

､ אֲדֹנָי֙

’ă·ḏō·nāy

of the Lord ､

､ אֹמֵ֔ר

’ō·mêr,

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

מִ֥י

mî

､ אֶשְׁלַ֖ח

’eš·laḥ

shall I send ､

וּמִ֣י

ū·mî

and who

יֵֽלֶךְ־

yê·leḵ-

will go

לָ֑נוּ

lā·nū;

for Us

וָאֹמַ֖ר

wā·’ō·mar

and I said

הִנְנִ֥י

hin·nî

Here [am] I

. שְׁלָחֵֽנִי׃

šə·lā·ḥê·nî.

Send me .

､ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And He said ､

､ לֵ֥ךְ

lêḵ

go ､

וְאָמַרְתָּ֖

wə·’ā·mar·tā

and tell

､ לָעָ֣ם

lā·‘ām

הַזֶּ֑ה

haz·zeh;

שִׁמְע֤וּ

šim·‘ū

שָׁמ֙וֹעַ֙

šā·mō·w·a‘

– וְאַל־

wə·’al-

but not –

תָּבִ֔ינוּ

tā·ḇî·nū,

וּרְא֥וּ

ū·rə·’ū

､ רָא֖וֹ

rā·’ōw

Keep on ､

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

but not

. תֵּדָֽעוּ׃

tê·ḏā·‘ū.

הַשְׁמֵן֙

haš·mên

לֵב־

lêḇ-

הָעָ֣ם

hā·‘ām

הַזֶּ֔ה

haz·zeh,

וְאָזְנָ֥יו

wə·’ā·zə·nāw

､ הַכְבֵּ֖ד

haḵ·bêḏ

– וְעֵינָ֣יו

wə·‘ê·nāw

and their eyes –

הָשַׁ֑ע

hā·ša‘;

פֶּן־

pen-

יִרְאֶ֨ה

yir·’eh

､ בְעֵינָ֜יו

ḇə·‘ê·nāw

with their eyes ､

､ וּבְאָזְנָ֣יו

ū·ḇə·’ā·zə·nāw

and with their ears ､

יִשְׁמָ֗ע

yiš·mā‘,

､ וּלְבָב֥וֹ

ū·lə·ḇā·ḇōw

and with their heart ､

יָבִ֛ין

yā·ḇîn

､ וָשָׁ֖ב

wā·šāḇ

and return ､

וְרָ֥פָא

wə·rā·p̄ā

and be healed

. לֽוֹ׃

lōw.

to .

וָאֹמַ֕ר

wā·’ō·mar

And I said

עַד־

‘aḏ-

؟ מָתַ֖י

mā·ṯay

､ אֲדֹנָ֑י

’ă·ḏō·nāy;

Lord ､

､ וַיֹּ֡אמֶר

way·yō·mer

and He answered ､

עַ֣ד

‘aḏ

אֲשֶׁר֩

’ă·šer

אִם־

’im-

lo

שָׁא֨וּ

šā·’ū

עָרִ֜ים

‘ā·rîm

מֵאֵ֣ין

mê·’ên

､ יוֹשֵׁ֗ב

yō·wō·šêḇ,

וּבָתִּים֙

ū·ḇāt·tîm

and the houses are

מֵאֵ֣ין

mê·’ên

､ אָדָ֔ם

’ā·ḏām,

a man ､

וְהָאֲדָמָ֖ה

wə·hā·’ă·ḏā·māh

and the land

､ תִּשָּׁאֶ֥ה

tiš·šā·’eh

is desolate ､

. שְׁמָמָֽה׃

šə·mā·māh.

וְרִחַ֥ק

wə·ri·ḥaq

And has removed far away

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָאָדָ֑ם

hā·’ā·ḏām;

וְרַבָּ֥ה

wə·rab·bāh

and [are] many

הָעֲזוּבָ֖ה

hā·‘ă·zū·ḇāh

the forsaken places

בְּקֶ֥רֶב

bə·qe·reḇ

in the midst

. הָאָֽרֶץ׃

hā·’ā·reṣ.

of the land .

וְע֥וֹד

wə·‘ō·wḏ

But yet

בָּהּ֙

bāh

[will be] in it

､ עֲשִׂ֣רִיָּ֔ה

‘ă·śi·rî·yāh,

a tenth ､

､ וְשָׁ֖בָה

wə·šā·ḇāh

and will return ､

וְהָיְתָ֣ה

wə·hā·yə·ṯāh

and be

､ לְבָעֵ֑ר

lə·ḇā·‘êr;

for consuming ､

､ כָּאֵלָ֣ה

kā·’ê·lāh

as a terebinth [tree] ､

､ וְכָאַלּ֗וֹן

wə·ḵā·’al·lō·wn,

or as an oak ､

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

בְּשַׁלֶּ֙כֶת֙

bə·šal·le·ḵeṯ

when it is cut down

מַצֶּ֣בֶת

maṣ·ṣe·ḇeṯ

stump [remains]

בָּ֔ם

bām,

in

זֶ֥רַע

ze·ra‘

so the seed [shall be]

קֹ֖דֶשׁ

qō·ḏeš

. מַצַּבְתָּֽהּ׃

maṣ·ṣaḇ·tāh.
