a sash ､

פִּשְׁתִּ֔ים

piš·tîm,

וְשַׂמְתּ֖וֹ

wə·śam·tōw

and put it

עַל־

‘al-

､ מָתְנֶ֑יךָ

mā·ṯə·ne·ḵā;

וּבַמַּ֖יִם

ū·ḇam·ma·yim

but in water

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. תְבִאֵֽהוּ׃

ṯə·ḇi·’ê·hū.

do put it .

וָאֶקְנֶ֥ה

wā·’eq·neh

So I got

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָאֵז֖וֹר

hā·’ê·zō·wr

כִּדְבַ֣ר

kiḏ·ḇar

according to the word

､ יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

of Yahweh ､

וָאָשִׂ֖ם

wā·’ā·śim

and put [it]

עַל־

‘al-

. מָתְנָֽי׃

mā·ṯə·nāy.

my waist .

And came

דְבַר־

ḏə·ḇar-

the word

יְהוָ֛ה

אֵלַ֖י

to me

､ שֵׁנִ֥ית

the second [time] ､

､ לֵאמֹֽר׃

lê·mōr.

קַ֧ח

qaḥ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָאֵז֛וֹר

hā·’ê·zō·wr

the sash

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

､ קָנִ֖יתָ

qā·nî·ṯā

you acquired ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

which [is]

עַל־

‘al-

､ מָתְנֶ֑יךָ

mā·ṯə·ne·ḵā;

､ וְקוּם֙

wə·qūm

and arise ､

לֵ֣ךְ

lêḵ

go

､ פְּרָ֔תָה

pə·rā·ṯāh,

to the Euphrates ､

וְטָמְנֵ֥הוּ

wə·ṭā·mə·nê·hū

and hide it

שָׁ֖ם

šām

בִּנְקִ֥יק

bin·qîq

in a hole in

. הַסָּֽלַע׃

has·sā·la‘.

the rock .

､ וָאֵלֵ֕ךְ

wā·’ê·lêḵ

So I went ､

וָאֶטְמְנֵ֖הוּ

wā·’eṭ·mə·nê·hū

and hid it

､ בִּפְרָ֑ת

bip̄·rāṯ;

by the Euphrates ､

כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

צִוָּ֥ה

ṣiw·wāh

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

. אוֹתִֽי׃

’ō·w·ṯî.

me .

וַיְהִ֕י

way·hî

And it came to pass

מִקֵּ֖ץ

miq·qêṣ

､ יָמִ֣ים

yā·mîm

days ､

רַבִּ֑ים

rab·bîm;

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר

way·yō·mer

יְהוָ֜ה

Yah·weh

אֵלַ֗י

’ê·lay,

to me

､ ק֚וּם

qūm

לֵ֣ךְ

lêḵ

go

､ פְּרָ֔תָה

to the Euphrates ､

וְקַ֤ח

wə·qaḥ

and take

､ מִשָּׁם֙

miš·šām

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָ֣אֵז֔וֹר

hā·’ê·zō·wr,

the sash

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

צִוִּיתִ֖יךָ

ṣiw·wî·ṯî·ḵā

I commanded you

לְטָמְנוֹ־

lə·ṭā·mə·nōw-

. שָֽׁם׃

šām.

וָאֵלֵ֣ךְ

wā·’ê·lêḵ

And I went

､ פְּרָ֔תָה

pə·rā·ṯāh,

to the Euphrates ､

､ וָאֶחְפֹּ֗ר

wā·’eḥ·pōr,

and dug ､

וָֽאֶקַּח֙

wā·’eq·qaḥ

and I took

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הָ֣אֵז֔וֹר

hā·’ê·zō·wr,

the sash

מִן־

min-

הַמָּק֖וֹם

ham·mā·qō·wm

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

טְמַנְתִּ֣יו

ṭə·man·tîw

I had hidden it

שָׁ֑מָּה

šām·māh;

､ וְהִנֵּה֙

wə·hin·nêh

and there ､

､ נִשְׁחַ֣ת

niš·ḥaṯ

הָאֵז֔וֹר

hā·’ê·zō·wr,

the sash

. לֹ֥א

lō

not .

יִצְלַ֖ח

yiṣ·laḥ

It was profitable

. לַכֹּֽל׃

lak·kōl.

And came

דְבַר־

the word

to me

､ לֵאמֹֽר׃

I will ruin

אֶת־

’eṯ-

גְּא֧וֹן

gə·’ō·wn

､ יְהוּדָ֛ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

of Judah ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

גְּא֥וֹן

gə·’ō·wn

יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם

yə·rū·šā·lim

. הָרָֽב׃

hā·rāḇ.

the great .

､ הָעָם֩

hā·‘ām

הַזֶּ֨ה

haz·zeh

הָרָ֜ע

hā·rā‘

הַֽמֵּאֲנִ֣ים ׀

ham·mê·’ă·nîm

לִשְׁמ֣וֹעַ

liš·mō·w·a‘

אֶת־

､ דְּבָרַ֗י

My words ､

הַהֹֽלְכִים֙

ha·hō·lə·ḵîm

בִּשְׁרִר֣וּת

biš·ri·rūṯ

､ לִבָּ֔ם

lib·bām,

of their hearts ､

וַיֵּלְכ֗וּ

way·yê·lə·ḵū,

and walk

אַֽחֲרֵי֙

’a·ḥă·rê

､ אֱלֹהִ֣ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm

gods ､

אֲחֵרִ֔ים

’ă·ḥê·rîm,

לְעָבְדָ֖ם

lə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏām

וּלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֣ת

ū·lə·hiš·ta·ḥă·wōṯ

לָהֶ֑ם

lā·hem;

וִיהִי֙

wî·hî

､ כָּאֵז֣וֹר

kā·’ê·zō·wr

just like sash ､

הַזֶּ֔ה

haz·zeh,

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

לֹא־

lō-

not

יִצְלַ֖ח

yiṣ·laḥ

. לַכֹּֽל׃

lak·kōl.

כִּ֡י

כַּאֲשֶׁר֩

as

יִדְבַּ֨ק

הָאֵז֜וֹר

the sash

of a man ､

הִדְבַּ֣קְתִּי

I have caused to cling

to Me

יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל

וְאֶת־

and

､ יְהוּדָה֙

of Judah ､

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

– יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

לִֽהְי֥וֹת

lih·yō·wṯ

that they may become

לִי֙

lî

My

､ לְעָ֔ם

lə·‘ām,

､ וּלְשֵׁ֥ם

ū·lə·šêm

､ וְלִתְהִלָּ֖ה

wə·liṯ·hil·lāh

– וּלְתִפְאָ֑רֶת

ū·lə·ṯip̄·’ā·reṯ;

וְלֹ֖א

wə·lō

but not

. שָׁמֵֽעוּ׃

šā·mê·‘ū.

they would hear .

The Wineskins

וְאָמַרְתָּ֨

wə·’ā·mar·tā

Therefore you shall speak

אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם

’ă·lê·hem

אֶת־

’eṯ-

– הַדָּבָ֣ר

had·dā·ḇār

הַזֶּ֗ה

יִמָּ֣לֵא

shall be filled with

– יָ֑יִן

wine –

וְאָמְר֣וּ

wə·’ā·mə·rū

and they will say

אֵלֶ֔יךָ

’ê·le·ḵā,

to you

הֲיָדֹ֙עַ֙

hă·yā·ḏō·a‘

לֹ֣א

lō

not

נֵדַ֔ע

nê·ḏa‘,

כִּ֥י

kî

כָל־

ḵāl

נֵ֖בֶל

nê·ḇel

יִמָּ֥לֵא

yim·mā·lê

will be filled

؟ יָֽיִן׃

yā·yin.

with wine ؟

וְאָמַרְתָּ֨

wə·’ā·mar·tā

and you shall say

אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם

’ă·lê·hem

כֹּֽה־

kōh-

אָמַ֣ר

､ יְהוָ֗ה

הִנְנִ֣י

hin·nî

מְמַלֵּ֣א

mə·mal·lê

will fill

אֶת־

’eṯ-

כָּל־

kāl-

יֹשְׁבֵ֣י

yō·šə·ḇê

the inhabitants

､ הָאָ֪רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ

of land ､

הַזֹּ֟את

haz·zōṯ

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and even

הַמְּלָכִ֣ים

ham·mə·lā·ḵîm

הַיֹּשְׁבִים֩

hay·yō·šə·ḇîm

לְדָוִ֨ד

lə·ḏā·wiḏ

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ כִּסְא֜וֹ

kis·’ōw

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

､ הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים

hak·kō·hă·nîm

the priests ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

､ הַנְּבִיאִ֗ים

han·nə·ḇî·’îm,

the prophets ､

וְאֵ֛ת

wə·’êṯ

and

כָּל־

kāl-

יֹשְׁבֵ֥י

yō·šə·ḇê

the inhabitants

､ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֖ם

yə·rū·šā·lim

of Jerusalem ､

. שִׁכָּרֽוֹן׃

šik·kā·rō·wn.

with drunkenness .

וְנִפַּצְתִּים֩

wə·nip·paṣ·tîm

And I will dash them

אִ֨ישׁ

’îš

אֶל־

’el-

､ אָחִ֜יו

’ā·ḥîw

וְהָאָב֧וֹת

wə·hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯ

and even the fathers

וְהַבָּנִ֛ים

wə·hab·bā·nîm

and the sons

､ יַחְדָּ֖ו

yaḥ·dāw

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

. יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

לֹֽא־

lō-

Not

､ אֶחְמ֧וֹל

’eḥ·mō·wl

I will pity ､

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

､ אָח֛וּס

’ā·ḥūs

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

､ אֲרַחֵ֖ם

’ă·ra·ḥêm

. מֵהַשְׁחִיתָֽם׃

mê·haš·ḥî·ṯām.

but will destroy them .

Captivity Threatened

שִׁמְע֥וּ

– וְהַאֲזִ֖ינוּ

wə·ha·’ă·zî·nū

and give ear –

אַל־

’al-

not

､ תִּגְבָּ֑הוּ

tiḡ·bā·hū;

do be proud ､

כִּ֥י

kî

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

. דִּבֵּֽר׃

dib·bêr.

תְּנוּ֩

tə·nū

לַיהוָ֨ה

Yah·weh

､ אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֤ם

’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem

כָּבוֹד֙

kā·ḇō·wḏ

בְּטֶ֣רֶם

bə·ṭe·rem

､ יַחְשִׁ֔ךְ

yaḥ·šiḵ,

He causes darkness ､

וּבְטֶ֛רֶם

ū·ḇə·ṭe·rem

יִֽתְנַגְּפ֥וּ

yiṯ·nag·gə·p̄ū

רַגְלֵיכֶ֖ם

raḡ·lê·ḵem

עַל־

‘al-

On

､ הָ֣רֵי

hā·rê

the mountains ､

נָ֑שֶׁף

nā·šep̄;

וְקִוִּיתֶ֤ם

wə·qiw·wî·ṯem

and while you are looking

､ לְאוֹר֙

lə·’ō·wr

וְשָׂמָ֣הּ

wə·śā·māh

and He turns it

､ לְצַלְמָ֔וֶת

lə·ṣal·mā·weṯ,

into the shadow of death ､

[ישית]

yā·šîṯ

-

(וְשִׁ֖ית)

wə·šîṯ

[And] makes [it]

. לַעֲרָפֶֽל׃

la·‘ă·rā·p̄el.

dense darkness .

וְאִם֙

wə·’im

But if

לֹ֣א

lō

not

תִשְׁמָע֔וּהָ

ṯiš·mā·‘ū·hā,

you will hear it

בְּמִסְתָּרִ֥ים

bə·mis·tā·rîm

תִּבְכֶּֽה־

tiḇ·keh-

will weep

נַפְשִׁ֖י

nap̄·šî

מִפְּנֵ֣י

mip·pə·nê

– גֵוָ֑ה

ḡê·wāh;

[your] pride –

וְדָמֹ֨עַ

wə·ḏā·mō·a‘

､ תִּדְמַ֜ע

tiḏ·ma‘

will weep ､

וְתֵרַ֤ד

wə·ṯê·raḏ

עֵינִי֙

‘ê·nî

､ דִּמְעָ֔ה

dim·‘āh,

with tears ､

כִּ֥י

kî

. נִשְׁבָּ֖ה

niš·bāh

has been taken captive .

עֵ֥דֶר

‘ê·ḏer

. יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

לַמֶּ֛לֶךְ

lam·me·leḵ

to the king

､ וְלַגְּבִירָ֖ה

wə·lag·gə·ḇî·rāh

and to the queen mother ､

､ הַשְׁפִּ֣ילוּ

haš·pî·lū

Humble yourselves ､

– שֵׁ֑בוּ

šê·ḇū;

כִּ֤י

kî

､ יָרַד֙

yā·raḏ

shall collapse ､

מַרְאֲשׁ֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם

mar·’ă·šō·w·ṯê·ḵem,

עֲטֶ֖רֶת

‘ă·ṭe·reṯ

. תִּֽפְאַרְתְּכֶֽם׃

tip̄·’ar·tə·ḵem.

of your glory .

עָרֵ֥י

‘ā·rê

הַנֶּ֛גֶב

han·ne·ḡeḇ

of the Negev

､ סֻגְּר֖וּ

sug·gə·rū

shall be shut up ､

וְאֵ֣ין

wə·’ên

and no one

פֹּתֵ֑חַ

pō·ṯê·aḥ;

shall open [them]

הָגְלָ֧ת

hā·ḡə·lāṯ

shall be carried away captive

יְהוּדָ֛ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

כֻּלָּ֖הּ

kul·lāh

all of it

הָגְלָ֥ת

hā·ḡə·lāṯ

shall be carried away captive

. שְׁלוֹמִֽים׃

šə·lō·w·mîm.

הַבָּאִ֖ים

. מִצָּפ֑וֹן

miṣ·ṣā·p̄ō·wn;

from the north .

אַיֵּ֗ה

’ay·yêh,

Where [is]

הָעֵ֙דֶר֙

hā·‘ê·ḏer

נִתַּן־

nit·tan-

[that] was given

לָ֔ךְ

lāḵ,

to you

צֹ֖אן

ṣōn

؟ תִּפְאַרְתֵּֽךְ׃

tip̄·’ar·têḵ.

Your beautiful ؟

מַה־

mah-

תֹּֽאמְרִי֙

tō·mə·rî

will you say

כִּֽי־

kî-

יִפְקֹ֣ד

yip̄·qōḏ

עָלַ֔יִךְ

‘ā·la·yiḵ,

וְ֠אַתְּ

wə·’at

לִמַּ֨דְתְּ

lim·maḏt

אֹתָ֥ם

’ō·ṯām

עָלַ֛יִךְ

‘ā·la·yiḵ

､ אַלֻּפִ֖ים

’al·lu·p̄îm

[To be] chieftains ､

לְרֹ֑אשׁ

lə·rōš;

to be head

הֲל֤וֹא

hă·lō·w

will not

חֲבָלִים֙

ḥă·ḇā·lîm

יֹאחֱז֔וּךְ

yō·ḥĕ·zūḵ,

כְּמ֖וֹ

kə·mōw

אֵ֥שֶׁת

’ê·šeṯ

؟ לֵדָֽה׃

lê·ḏāh.

in labor ؟

וְכִ֤י

wə·ḵî

and if

תֹאמְרִי֙

ṯō·mə·rî

､ בִּלְבָבֵ֔ךְ

bil·ḇā·ḇêḵ,

in your heart ､

מַדּ֖וּעַ

mad·dū·a‘

קְרָאֻ֣נִי

qə·rā·’u·nî

have come upon me

אֵ֑לֶּה

’êl·leh;

בְּרֹ֧ב

bə·rōḇ

for the greatness

עֲוֺנֵ֛ךְ

‘ă·wō·nêḵ

of your iniquity

､ נִגְל֥וּ

niḡ·lū

have been uncovered ､

שׁוּלַ֖יִךְ

šū·la·yiḵ

נֶחְמְס֥וּ

neḥ·mə·sū

. עֲקֵבָֽיִךְ׃

‘ă·qê·ḇā·yiḵ.

הֲיַהֲפֹ֤ךְ

hă·ya·hă·p̄ōḵ

כּוּשִׁי֙

kū·šî

､ עוֹר֔וֹ

‘ō·w·rōw,

וְנָמֵ֖ר

wə·nā·mêr

or the leopard

؟ חֲבַרְבֻּרֹתָ֑יו

ḥă·ḇar·bu·rō·ṯāw;

גַּם־

gam-

אַתֶּם֙

’at·tem

תּוּכְל֣וּ

tū·ḵə·lū

､ לְהֵיטִ֔יב

lə·hê·ṭîḇ,

do good ､

לִמֻּדֵ֖י

lim·mu·ḏê

who are accustomed

. הָרֵֽעַ׃

hā·rê·a‘.

to do evil .

וַאֲפִיצֵ֖ם

wa·’ă·p̄î·ṣêm

Therefore I will scatter them

כְּקַשׁ־

kə·qaš-

עוֹבֵ֑ר

‘ō·w·ḇêr;

that passes away

לְר֖וּחַ

lə·rū·aḥ

by the wind

. מִדְבָּֽר׃

miḏ·bār.

of the wilderness .

זֶ֣ה

zeh

This [is]

､ גוֹרָלֵ֧ךְ

ḡō·w·rā·lêḵ

מְנָת־

mə·nāṯ-

מִדַּ֛יִךְ

mid·da·yiḵ

of your measures

מֵֽאִתִּ֖י

mê·’it·tî

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

– יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

אֲשֶׁר֙

’ă·šer

שָׁכַ֣חַתְּ

šā·ḵa·ḥat

you have forgotten

אוֹתִ֔י

’ō·w·ṯî,

Me

וַֽתִּבְטְחִ֖י

wat·tiḇ·ṭə·ḥî

. בַּשָּֽׁקֶר׃

baš·šā·qer.

וְגַם־

wə·ḡam-

אֲנִ֛י

’ă·nî

I

חָשַׂ֥פְתִּי

ḥā·śap̄·tî

שׁוּלַ֖יִךְ

šū·la·yiḵ

עַל־

‘al-

､ פָּנָ֑יִךְ

pā·nā·yiḵ;

וְנִרְאָ֖ה

wə·nir·’āh

that may appear

. קְלוֹנֵֽךְ׃

qə·lō·w·nêḵ.

､ נִֽאֻפַ֤יִךְ

ni·’u·p̄a·yiḵ

Your adulteries ､

､ וּמִצְהֲלוֹתַ֙יִךְ֙

ū·miṣ·hă·lō·w·ṯa·yiḵ

and your [lustful] neighings ､

זִמַּ֣ת

zim·maṯ

､ זְנוּתֵ֔ךְ

zə·nū·ṯêḵ,

of your harlotry ､

עַל־

‘al-

on

גְּבָעוֹת֙

gə·ḇā·‘ō·wṯ

. בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה

baś·śā·ḏeh,

in the fields .

רָאִ֖יתִי

rā·’î·ṯî

שִׁקּוּצָ֑יִךְ

šiq·qū·ṣā·yiḵ;

Your abominations

א֥וֹי

’ō·w

לָךְ֙

lāḵ

to you

! יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם

yə·rū·šā·lim,

לֹ֣א

lō

not

؟ תִטְהֲרִ֔י

ṯiṭ·hă·rî,

will you be made clean ؟

אַחֲרֵ֥י

’a·ḥă·rê

מָתַ֖י

mā·ṯay

. עֹֽד׃
