צַדִּ֤יק

ṣad·dîq

､ אַתָּה֙

’at·tāh

[are] You ､

､ יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

כִּ֥י

kî

אָרִ֖יב

’ā·rîḇ

אֵלֶ֑יךָ

’ê·le·ḵā;

with You

אַ֤ךְ

’aḵ

– מִשְׁפָּטִים֙

miš·pā·ṭîm

about [Your] judgments –

אֲדַבֵּ֣ר

’ă·ḏab·bêr

אוֹתָ֔ךְ

’ō·w·ṯāḵ,

with You

מַדּ֗וּעַ

mad·dū·a‘,

דֶּ֤רֶךְ

de·reḵ

the way

רְשָׁעִים֙

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked

؟ צָלֵ֔חָה

ṣā·lê·ḥāh,

does prosper ؟

שָׁל֖וּ

šā·lū

[Why] are those happy

כָּל־

kāl-

בֹּ֥גְדֵי

bō·ḡə·ḏê

؟ בָֽגֶד׃

ḇā·ḡeḏ.

treacherously ؟

נְטַעְתָּם֙

nə·ṭa‘·tām

You have planted them

､ גַּם־

gam-

yes ､

– שֹׁרָ֔שׁוּ

šō·rā·šū,

they have taken root –

､ יֵלְכ֖וּ

yê·lə·ḵū

､ גַּם־

gam-

yes ､

עָ֣שׂוּ

‘ā·śū

. פֶ֑רִי

p̄e·rî;

קָר֤וֹב

qā·rō·wḇ

אַתָּה֙

’at·tāh

､ בְּפִיהֶ֔ם

bə·p̄î·hem,

in their mouth ､

וְרָח֖וֹק

wə·rā·ḥō·wq

but far

. מִכִּלְיוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃

mik·kil·yō·w·ṯê·hem.

from their mind .

､ וְאַתָּ֤ה

wə·’at·tāh

But You ､

､ יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

יְדַעְתָּ֔נִי

yə·ḏa‘·tā·nî,

תִּרְאֵ֕נִי

tir·’ê·nî

You have seen me

וּבָחַנְתָּ֥

ū·ḇā·ḥan·tā

and You have tested

לִבִּ֖י

lib·bî

אִתָּ֑ךְ

’it·tāḵ;

הַתִּקֵם֙

hat·ti·qêm

כְּצֹ֣אן

kə·ṣōn

､ לְטִבְחָ֔ה

lə·ṭiḇ·ḥāh,

for the slaughter ､

וְהַקְדִּשֵׁ֖ם

wə·haq·di·šêm

and prepare them

לְי֥וֹם

lə·yō·wm

. הֲרֵגָֽה׃

hă·rê·ḡāh.

עַד־

‘aḏ-

מָתַי֙

mā·ṯay

､ תֶּאֱבַ֣ל

te·’ĕ·ḇal

will mourn ､

הָאָ֔רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

the land

וְעֵ֥שֶׂב

wə·‘ê·śeḇ

and the herbs

כָּל־

kāl-

הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה

haś·śā·ḏeh

､ יִיבָ֑שׁ

yî·ḇāš;

מֵרָעַ֣ת

mê·rā·‘aṯ

for the wickedness

יֹֽשְׁבֵי־

yō·šə·ḇê-

of those who dwell

בָ֗הּ

ḇāh,

､ סָפְתָ֤ה

sā·p̄ə·ṯāh

are consumed ､

בְהֵמוֹת֙

ḇə·hê·mō·wṯ

– וָע֔וֹף

wā·‘ō·wp̄,

and birds –

כִּ֣י

kî

､ אָמְר֔וּ

’ā·mə·rū,

לֹ֥א

lō

not

יִרְאֶ֖ה

yir·’eh

He will see

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. אַחֲרִיתֵֽנוּ׃

’a·ḥă·rî·ṯê·nū.

our final end .

God's Answer to Jeremiah

כִּ֣י

kî

If

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

､ רַגְלִ֥ים ׀

raḡ·lîm

the footmen ､

רַ֙צְתָּה֙

raṣ·tāh

וַיַּלְא֔וּךָ

way·yal·’ū·ḵā,

and they have wearied you

וְאֵ֥יךְ

wə·’êḵ

and how

תְּתַֽחֲרֶ֖ה

tə·ṯa·ḥă·reh

can you contend

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

؟ הַסּוּסִ֑ים

has·sū·sîm;

וּבְאֶ֤רֶץ

ū·ḇə·’e·reṣ

and [if] in the land

､ שָׁלוֹם֙

šā·lō·wm

of peace ､

אַתָּ֣ה

’at·tāh

､ בוֹטֵ֔חַ

ḇō·w·ṭê·aḥ,

trusted [they wearied you] ､

וְאֵ֥יךְ

wə·’êḵ

and how

תַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה

ta·‘ă·śeh

will you do

בִּגְא֥וֹן

biḡ·’ō·wn

in the floodplain

؟ הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

hay·yar·dên.

of the Jordan ؟

כִּ֧י

kî

גַם־

ḡam-

､ אַחֶ֣יךָ

’a·ḥe·ḵā

your brothers ､

וּבֵית־

ū·ḇêṯ-

and the house

､ אָבִ֗יךָ

’ā·ḇî·ḵā,

of your father ､

גַּם־

gam-

הֵ֙מָּה֙

hêm·māh

בָּ֣גְדוּ

bā·ḡə·ḏū

have dealt treacherously

בָ֔ךְ

ḇāḵ,

with you

､ גַּם־

gam-

Yes ､

הֵ֛מָּה

hêm·māh

קָרְא֥וּ

qā·rə·’ū

אַחֲרֶ֖יךָ

’a·ḥă·re·ḵā

מָלֵ֑א

mā·lê;

､ אַל־

’al-

not ､

תַּאֲמֵ֣ן

ta·’ă·mên

בָּ֔ם

bām,

כִּֽי־

kî-

יְדַבְּר֥וּ

yə·ḏab·bə·rū

אֵלֶ֖יךָ

’ê·le·ḵā

to you

. טוֹבֽוֹת׃

ṭō·w·ḇō·wṯ.

עָזַ֙בְתִּי֙

I have forsaken

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ בֵּיתִ֔י

bê·ṯî,

My house ､

נָטַ֖שְׁתִּי

nā·ṭaš·tî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– נַחֲלָתִ֑י

na·ḥă·lā·ṯî;

My heritage –

נָתַ֛תִּי

nā·ṯat·tî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

יְדִד֥וּת

yə·ḏi·ḏūṯ

the dearly beloved

נַפְשִׁ֖י

nap̄·šî

of My soul

בְּכַ֥ף

bə·ḵap̄

. אֹיְבֶֽיהָ׃

’ō·yə·ḇe·hā.

of her enemies .

הָיְתָה־

hā·yə·ṯāh-

Is

לִּ֥י

lî

to Me

נַחֲלָתִ֖י

na·ḥă·lā·ṯî

כְּאַרְיֵ֣ה

kə·’ar·yêh

– בַיָּ֑עַר

ḇay·yā·‘ar;

in the forest –

נָתְנָ֥ה

nā·ṯə·nāh

עָלַ֛י

‘ā·lay

בְּקוֹלָ֖הּ

bə·qō·w·lāh

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּ֥ן

kên

. שְׂנֵאתִֽיהָ׃

śə·nê·ṯî·hā.

have I hated it .

､ הַעַ֨יִט

ha·‘a·yiṭ

[like] a vulture ､

צָב֤וּעַ

ṣā·ḇū·a‘

נַחֲלָתִי֙

na·ḥă·lā·ṯî

My heritage [is]

לִ֔י

lî,

to Me

הַעַ֖יִט

ha·‘a·yiṭ

the vultures [are]

סָבִ֣יב

sā·ḇîḇ

עָלֶ֑יהָ

‘ā·le·hā;

לְכ֗וּ

lə·ḵū,

אִסְפ֛וּ

’is·p̄ū

כָּל־

kāl-

חַיַּ֥ת

ḥay·yaṯ

､ הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה

haś·śā·ḏeh

of the field ､

הֵתָ֥יוּ

hê·ṯā·yū

. לְאָכְלָֽה׃

lə·’āḵ·lāh

רֹעִ֤ים

rō·‘îm

רַבִּים֙

rab·bîm

שִֽׁחֲת֣וּ

ši·ḥă·ṯū

､ כַרְמִ֔י

ḵar·mî,

My vineyard ､

בֹּסְס֖וּ

bō·sə·sū

they have trodden underfoot

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

חֶלְקָתִ֑י

ḥel·qā·ṯî;

נָֽתְנ֛וּ

nā·ṯə·nū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

חֶלְקַ֥ת

ḥel·qaṯ

חֶמְדָּתִ֖י

ḥem·dā·ṯî

לְמִדְבַּ֥ר

lə·miḏ·bar

. שְׁמָמָֽה׃

šə·mā·māh.

שָׂמָהּ֙

śā·māh

They have made it

לִשְׁמָמָ֔ה

liš·mā·māh,

אָבְלָ֥ה

’ā·ḇə·lāh

עָלַ֖י

‘ā·lay

to Me

､ שְׁמֵמָ֑ה

šə·mê·māh;

､ נָשַׁ֙מָּה֙

nā·šam·māh

is made desolate ､

כָּל־

kāl-

הָאָ֔רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

the land

כִּ֛י

kî

אֵ֥ין

’ên

no

אִ֖ישׁ

’îš

שָׂ֥ם

śām

takes [it]

עַל־

‘al-

to

. לֵֽב׃

lêḇ.

עַֽל־

‘al-

On

כָּל־

kāl-

שְׁפָיִ֣ם

šə·p̄ā·yim

the desolate heights

– בַּמִּדְבָּ֗ר

bam·miḏ·bār,

in the wilderness –

בָּ֚אוּ

bā·’ū

שֹֽׁדְדִ֔ים

šō·ḏə·ḏîm,

כִּ֣י

kî

חֶ֤רֶב

ḥe·reḇ

לַֽיהוָה֙

Yah·weh

אֹֽכְלָ֔ה

’ō·ḵə·lāh,

מִקְצֵה־

miq·ṣêh-

and from [one] end

אֶ֖רֶץ

’e·reṣ

of the land

וְעַד־

wə·‘aḏ-

to

קְצֵ֣ה

qə·ṣêh

the [other] end

– הָאָ֑רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ;

No shall have –

אֵ֥ין

’ên

of the land

. שָׁל֖וֹם

šā·lō·wm

לְכָל־

lə·ḵāl

On all

. בָּשָֽׂר׃

bā·śār.

זָרְע֤וּ

zā·rə·‘ū

､ חִטִּים֙

ḥiṭ·ṭîm

､ וְקֹצִ֣ים

wə·qō·ṣîm

but thorns ､

קָצָ֔רוּ

qā·ṣā·rū,

､ נֶחְל֖וּ

neḥ·lū

they have put themselves to pain ､

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. יוֹעִ֑לוּ

yō·w·‘i·lū;

[but] do profit .

וּבֹ֙שׁוּ֙

ū·ḇō·šū

But be ashamed

מִתְּבוּאֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם

mit·tə·ḇū·’ō·ṯê·ḵem,

of your harvest

מֵחֲר֖וֹן

mê·ḥă·rō·wn

because of the fierce

אַף־

’ap̄-

. יְהוָֽה׃

､ שְׁכֵנַי֙

My neighbors ､

הָֽרָעִ֔ים

hā·rā·‘îm,

הַנֹּֽגְעִים֙

han·nō·ḡə·‘îm

בַּֽנַּחֲלָ֔ה

ban·na·ḥă·lāh,

the inheritance

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

– הִנְחַ֥לְתִּי

hin·ḥal·tî

I have caused to inherit –

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

עַמִּ֖י

‘am·mî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

yiś·rā·’êl;

הִנְנִ֤י

hin·nî

נֹֽתְשָׁם֙

nō·ṯə·šām

will pluck them

מֵעַ֣ל

mê·‘al

､ אַדְמָתָ֔ם

’aḏ·mā·ṯām,

of their land ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

בֵּ֥ית

bêṯ

יְהוּדָ֖ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

אֶתּ֥וֹשׁ

’et·tō·wōš

. מִתּוֹכָֽם׃

mit·tō·w·ḵām.

from among them .

､ וְהָיָ֗ה

wə·hā·yāh,

And it shall be ､

אַֽחֲרֵי֙

’a·ḥă·rê

נָתְשִׁ֣י

nā·ṯə·šî

I have plucked out

אוֹתָ֔ם

’ō·w·ṯām,

､ אָשׁ֖וּב

’ā·šūḇ

that I will return ､

וְרִֽחַמְתִּ֑ים

wə·ri·ḥam·tîm;

and have compassion on them

､ וַהֲשִׁבֹתִ֛ים

wa·hă·ši·ḇō·ṯîm

and bring them back ､

אִ֥ישׁ

’îš

､ לְנַחֲלָת֖וֹ

lə·na·ḥă·lā·ṯōw

to his heritage ､

וְאִ֥ישׁ

wə·’îš

. לְאַרְצֽוֹ׃

lə·’ar·ṣōw.

､ וְהָיָ֡ה

wə·hā·yāh

And it shall be ､

אִם־

’im-

if

לָמֹ֣ד

lā·mōḏ

יִלְמְדוּ֩

yil·mə·ḏū

they will learn

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

דַּֽרְכֵ֨י

dar·ḵê

the ways

､ עַמִּ֜י

‘am·mî

of My people ､

לְהִשָּׁבֵ֤עַ

lə·hiš·šā·ḇê·a‘

､ בִּשְׁמִי֙

biš·mî

by My name ､

– חַי־

ḥay-

as lives –

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

לִמְּדוּ֙

lim·mə·ḏū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

עַמִּ֔י

‘am·mî,

לְהִשָּׁבֵ֖עַ

lə·hiš·šā·ḇê·a‘

– בַּבָּ֑עַל

bab·bā·‘al;

by Baal –

וְנִבְנ֖וּ

wə·niḇ·nū

then they shall be established

בְּת֥וֹךְ

bə·ṯō·wḵ

in the midst

. עַמִּֽי׃

‘am·mî.

of My people .

וְאִ֖ם

wə·’im

But if

לֹ֣א

lō

not

､ יִשְׁמָ֑עוּ

yiš·mā·‘ū;

they do obey ､

וְנָ֨תַשְׁתִּ֜י

wə·nā·ṯaš·tî

and I will pluck up

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַגּ֥וֹי

hag·gō·w

הַה֛וּא

ha·hū

נָת֥וֹשׁ

nā·ṯō·wōš

וְאַבֵּ֖ד

wə·’ab·bêḏ

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

. יְהוָֽה׃
