Jonah's Prayer

וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֣ל
way·yiṯ·pal·lêl
And prayed
יוֹנָ֔ה
yō·w·nāh,
אֶל־
’el-
to
יְהוָ֖ה
Yah·weh
אֱלֹהָ֑יו
’ĕ·lō·hāw;
､ מִמְּעֵ֖י
mim·mə·‘ê
. הַדָּגָֽה׃
had·dā·ḡāh.
of the fish .

､ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר
way·yō·mer,
And he said ､
קָ֠רָאתִי
qā·rā·ṯî
מִצָּ֥רָה
miṣ·ṣā·rāh
לִ֛י
lî
my
אֶל־
’el-
to
､ יְהוָ֖ה
Yah·weh
Yahweh ､
וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי
way·ya·‘ă·nê·nî;
and He answered me
מִבֶּ֧טֶן
mib·be·ṭen
Out of the belly
שְׁא֛וֹל
šə·’ō·wl
שִׁוַּ֖עְתִּי
šiw·wa‘·tî
שָׁמַ֥עְתָּ
šā·ma‘·tā
[And] You heard
. קוֹלִֽי׃
qō·w·lî.
my voice .

וַתַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤נִי
wat·taš·lî·ḵê·nî
､ מְצוּלָה֙
mə·ṣū·lāh
into the deep ､
בִּלְבַ֣ב
bil·ḇaḇ
– יַמִּ֔ים
yam·mîm,
of the seas –
וְנָהָ֖ר
wə·nā·hār
and the floods
– יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי
yə·sō·ḇə·ḇê·nî;
surrounded me –
כָּל־
kāl-
מִשְׁבָּרֶ֥יךָ
miš·bā·re·ḵā
וְגַלֶּ֖יךָ
wə·ḡal·le·ḵā
עָלַ֥י
‘ā·lay
over me
. עָבָֽרוּ׃
‘ā·ḇā·rū.

וַאֲנִ֣י
wa·’ă·nî
And I
､ אָמַ֔רְתִּי
’ā·mar·tî,
said ､
נִגְרַ֖שְׁתִּי
niḡ·raš·tî
מִנֶּ֣גֶד
min·ne·ḡeḏ
of
– עֵינֶ֑יךָ
‘ê·ne·ḵā;
אַ֚ךְ
’aḵ
אוֹסִ֣יף
’ō·w·sîp̄
I will again
לְהַבִּ֔יט
lə·hab·bîṭ,
אֶל־
’el-
הֵיכַ֖ל
hê·ḵal
. קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃
qāḏ·še·ḵā

､ אֲפָפ֤וּנִי
’ă·p̄ā·p̄ū·nî
Surrounded me ､
מַ֙יִם֙
ma·yim
the waters
עַד־
‘aḏ-
[even] to
. נֶ֔פֶשׁ
ne·p̄eš,
my soul .
תְּה֖וֹם
tə·hō·wm
The deep
､ יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי
yə·sō·ḇə·ḇê·nî;
closed around me ､
ס֖וּף
sūp̄
חָב֥וּשׁ
ḥā·ḇūš
. לְרֹאשִֽׁי׃
lə·rō·šî.

לְקִצְבֵ֤י
lə·qiṣ·ḇê
To the moorings
– הָרִים֙
hā·rîm
of the mountains –
יָרַ֔דְתִּי
yā·raḏ·tî,
הָאָ֛רֶץ
hā·’ā·reṣ
בְּרִחֶ֥יהָ
bə·ri·ḥe·hā
with its bars
בַעֲדִ֖י
ḇa·‘ă·ḏî
､ לְעוֹלָ֑ם
lə·‘ō·w·lām;
וַתַּ֧עַל
wat·ta·‘al
､ מִשַּׁ֛חַת
miš·ša·ḥaṯ
from the pit ､
חַיַּ֖י
ḥay·yay
my life
יְהוָ֥ה
Yah·weh
. אֱלֹהָֽי׃
’ĕ·lō·hāy.
my God .

בְּהִתְעַטֵּ֤ף
bə·hiṯ·‘aṭ·ṭêp̄
עָלַי֙
‘ā·lay
נַפְשִׁ֔י
nap̄·šî,
my soul
אֶת־
’eṯ-
-
יְהוָ֖ה
Yah·weh
זָכָ֑רְתִּי
zā·ḵā·rə·tî;
וַתָּב֤וֹא
wat·tā·ḇō·w
and went [up]
אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙
’ê·le·ḵā
to You
תְּפִלָּתִ֔י
tə·p̄il·lā·ṯî,
אֶל־
’el-
הֵיכַ֖ל
hê·ḵal
. קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃
qāḏ·še·ḵā

מְשַׁמְּרִ֖ים
mə·šam·mə·rîm
הַבְלֵי־
haḇ·lê-
שָׁ֑וְא
šāw;
חַסְדָּ֖ם
ḥas·dām
. יַעֲזֹֽבוּ׃
ya·‘ă·zō·ḇū.

וַאֲנִ֗י
wa·’ă·nî,
But I
בְּק֤וֹל
bə·qō·wl
with the voice
– תּוֹדָה֙
tō·w·ḏāh
אֶזְבְּחָה־
’ez·bə·ḥāh-
לָּ֔ךְ
lāḵ,
to You
אֲשֶׁ֥ר
’ă·šer
. נָדַ֖רְתִּי
nā·ḏar·tî
אֲשַׁלֵּ֑מָה
’ă·šal·lê·māh;
I will pay
יְשׁוּעָ֖תָה
yə·šū·‘ā·ṯāh
. לַיהוָֽה׃
Yah·weh.
of Yahweh .

. הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃
hay·yab·bā·šāh.
