I Will Watch My Ways

､ לַמְנַצֵּ֥חַ

lam·naṣ·ṣê·aḥ

To the Chief Musician ､

לידיתון

lî·ḏî·ṯūn

､ [לִֽידוּת֗וּן]

lî·ḏū·ṯūn,

to Jeduthun ､

(מִזְמ֥וֹר)

miz·mō·wr

. לְדָוִֽד׃

lə·ḏā·wiḏ.

of David .

､ אָמַ֗רְתִּי

’ā·mar·tî,

I said ､

אֶֽשְׁמְרָ֣ה

’eš·mə·rāh

I will guard

､ דְרָכַי֮

ḏə·rā·ḵay

my ways ､

מֵחֲט֪וֹא

mê·ḥă·ṭō·w

– בִלְשׁ֫וֹנִ֥י

ḇil·šō·w·nî

with my tongue –

אֶשְׁמְרָ֥ה

’eš·mə·rāh

I will restrain

לְפִ֥י

lə·p̄î

､ מַחְס֑וֹם

maḥ·sō·wm;

with a muzzle ､

בְּעֹ֖ד

bə·‘ōḏ

רָשָׁ֣ע

rā·šā‘

. לְנֶגְדִּֽי׃

lə·neḡ·dî.

are before me .

נֶאֱלַ֣מְתִּי

ne·’ĕ·lam·tî

､ ד֭וּמִיָּה

ḏū·mî·yāh

with silence ､

､ הֶחֱשֵׁ֣יתִי

he·ḥĕ·šê·ṯî

I held my peace ､

– מִטּ֑וֹב

miṭ·ṭō·wḇ;

[even] from good –

וּכְאֵבִ֥י

ū·ḵə·’ê·ḇî

and my sorrow

. נֶעְכָּֽר׃

ne‘·kār.

was stirred up .

חַם־

ḥam-

לִבִּ֨י ׀

lib·bî

בְּקִרְבִּ֗י

bə·qir·bî,

בַּהֲגִיגִ֥י

ba·hă·ḡî·ḡî

while I was musing

– תִבְעַר־

ṯiḇ·‘ar-

אֵ֑שׁ

’êš;

the fire

דִּ֝בַּ֗רְתִּי

dib·bar·tî,

､ בִּלְשֽׁוֹנִי׃

bil·šō·w·nî.

with my tongue ､

הוֹדִ֘יעֵ֤נִי

hō·w·ḏî·‘ê·nî

make me to know

､ יְהוָ֨ה ׀

Yah·weh

､ קִצִּ֗י

qiṣ·ṣî,

my end ､

וּמִדַּ֣ת

ū·mid·daṯ

and the measure

､ יָמַ֣י

yā·may

of my days ､

מַה־

mah-

הִ֑יא

hî;

is

אֵ֝דְעָ֗ה

’ê·ḏə·‘āh,

[That] I may know

מֶה־

meh-

חָדֵ֥ל

ḥā·ḏêl

. אָֽנִי׃

’ā·nî.

I [am] .

､ הִנֵּ֤ה

hin·nêh

– טְפָח֨וֹת ׀

ṭə·p̄ā·ḥō·wṯ

[as] handbreadths –

נָ֘תַ֤תָּה

nā·ṯat·tāh

יָמַ֗י

yā·may,

וְחֶלְדִּ֣י

wə·ḥel·dî

and my age

כְאַ֣יִן

ḵə·’a·yin

as [is] nothing

נֶגְדֶּ֑ךָ

neḡ·de·ḵā;

אַ֥ךְ

’aḵ

כָּֽל־

kāl-

. הֶ֥בֶל

he·ḇel

[is] but vapor .

כָּל־

kāl-

אָ֝דָ֗ם

’ā·ḏām,

נִצָּ֥ב

niṣ·ṣāḇ

at his best state

. סֶֽלָה׃

se·lāh.

אַךְ־

’aḵ-

– בְּצֶ֤לֶם ׀

bə·ṣe·lem

like a shadow –

יִֽתְהַלֶּךְ־

yiṯ·hal·leḵ-

אִ֗ישׁ

’îš,

אַךְ־

’aḵ-

– הֶ֥בֶל

he·ḇel

in vain –

יֶהֱמָי֑וּן

ye·hĕ·mā·yūn;

they busy themselves

יִ֝צְבֹּ֗ר

yiṣ·bōr,

He heaps up [riches]

וְֽלֹא־

wə·lō-

and not

יֵדַ֥ע

yê·ḏa‘

מִי־

mî-

. אֹסְפָֽם׃

’ō·sə·p̄ām.

will gather them .

､ וְעַתָּ֣ה

wə·‘at·tāh

Now ､

מַה־

mah-

קִּוִּ֣יתִי

qiw·wî·ṯî

､ אֲדֹנָ֑י

’ă·ḏō·nāy;

Lord ､

תּ֝וֹחַלְתִּ֗י

tō·w·ḥal·tî,

לְךָ֣

lə·ḵā

in You

. הִֽיא׃

hî.

is .

מִכָּל־

mik·kāl

– פְּשָׁעַ֥י

pə·šā·‘ay

my transgressions –

הַצִּילֵ֑נִי

haṣ·ṣî·lê·nî;

חֶרְפַּ֥ת

ḥer·paṯ

נָ֝בָ֗ל

nā·ḇāl,

of the foolish

אַל־

’al-

not

. תְּשִׂימֵֽנִי׃

tə·śî·mê·nî.

do make me .

､ נֶ֭אֱלַמְתִּי

ne·’ĕ·lam·tî

I was mute ､

לֹ֣א

lō

not

אֶפְתַּח־

’ep̄·taḥ-

– פִּ֑י

pî;

my mouth –

כִּ֖י

kî

אַתָּ֣ה

’at·tāh

. עָשִֽׂיתָ׃

‘ā·śî·ṯā.

did [it] .

הָסֵ֣ר

hā·sêr

מֵעָלַ֣י

mê·‘ā·lay

נִגְעֶ֑ךָ

niḡ·‘e·ḵā;

מִתִּגְרַ֥ת

mit·tiḡ·raṯ

by the blow

יָ֝דְךָ֗

yā·ḏə·ḵā,

אֲנִ֣י

’ă·nî

I

. כָלִֽיתִי׃

ḵā·lî·ṯî.

בְּֽתוֹכָ֘ח֤וֹת

bə·ṯō·w·ḵā·ḥō·wṯ

When with rebukes

עַל־

‘al-

､ עָוֺ֨ן ׀

‘ā·wōn

יִסַּ֬רְתָּ

yis·sar·tā

אִ֗ישׁ

’îš,

וַתֶּ֣מֶס

wat·te·mes

– כָּעָ֣שׁ

kā·‘āš

like a moth –

חֲמוּד֑וֹ

ḥă·mū·ḏōw;

You make his beauty

אַ֤ךְ

’aḵ

. הֶ֖בֶל

he·ḇel

[is] vapor .

כָּל־

kāl-

אָדָ֣ם

’ā·ḏām

. סֶֽלָה׃

se·lāh.

שִֽׁמְעָ֥ה־

šim·‘āh-

､ תְפִלָּתִ֨י ׀

ṯə·p̄il·lā·ṯî

my prayer ､

､ יְהוָ֡ה

Yah·weh

– וְשַׁוְעָתִ֨י ׀

wə·šaw·‘ā·ṯî

and to my cry –

הַאֲזִינָה֮

ha·’ă·zî·nāh

אֶֽל־

’el-

at

– דִּמְעָתִ֗י

dim·‘ā·ṯî,

my tears –

אַֽל־

’al-

not

תֶּ֫חֱרַ֥שׁ

te·ḥĕ·raš

do be silent

כִּ֤י

kî

גֵ֣ר

ḡêr

אָנֹכִ֣י

’ā·nō·ḵî

I [am]

עִמָּ֑ךְ

‘im·māḵ;

with You

､ תּ֝וֹשָׁ֗ב

tō·wō·šāḇ,

a sojourner ､

כְּכָל־

kə·ḵāl-

as all

. אֲבוֹתָֽי׃

’ă·ḇō·w·ṯāy.

my fathers [were] .

הָשַׁ֣ע

hā·ša‘

Remove Your gaze

מִמֶּ֣נִּי

mim·men·nî

､ וְאַבְלִ֑יגָה

wə·’aḇ·lî·ḡāh;

that I may regain strength ､

בְּטֶ֖רֶם

bə·ṭe·rem

אֵלֵ֣ךְ

’ê·lêḵ

I go away

. וְאֵינֶֽנִּי׃

wə·’ê·nen·nî.

and am no more .
