וַתֹּ֥אמֶר

her mother-in-law

My daughter ､

הֲלֹ֧א

אֲבַקֶּשׁ־

לָ֛ךְ

מָנ֖וֹחַ

mā·nō·w·aḥ

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

יִֽיטַב־

yî·ṭaḇ-

it may be well

. לָֽךְ׃

with you .

וְעַתָּ֗ה

wə·‘at·tāh,

הֲלֹ֥א

hă·lō

[is he] not

בֹ֙עַז֙

ḇō·‘az

､ מֹֽדַעְתָּ֔נוּ

mō·ḏa‘·tā·nū,

our relative ､

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

with whose

؟ הָיִ֖ית

hā·yîṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

נַעֲרוֹתָ֑יו

na·‘ă·rō·w·ṯāw;

､ הִנֵּה־

hin·nêh-

in fact ､

ה֗וּא

hū,

he

זֹרֶ֛ה

zō·reh

אֶת־

’eṯ-

at

גֹּ֥רֶן

gō·ren

the threshing floor

הַשְּׂעֹרִ֖ים

haś·śə·‘ō·rîm

. הַלָּֽיְלָה׃

hal·lā·yə·lāh.

וְרָחַ֣צְתְּ ׀

wə·rā·ḥaṣt

Therefore wash yourself

וָסַ֗כְתְּ

wā·saḵt,

and anoint yourself

וְשַׂ֧מְתְּ

wə·śamt

and put on

[שמלתך]

śim·lō·ṯêḵ

-

(שִׂמְלֹתַ֛יִךְ)

śim·lō·ṯa·yiḵ

your [best] garment

עָלַ֖יִךְ

‘ā·la·yiḵ

on

[וירדתי]

wə·yā·raḏ·tî

-

(וְיָרַ֣דְתְּ)

wə·yā·raḏt

and go down

– הַגֹּ֑רֶן

hag·gō·ren;

to the threshing floor –

אַל־

’al-

not

תִּוָּדְעִ֣י

tiw·wā·ḏə·‘î

[but] do make yourself known

､ לָאִ֔ישׁ

lā·’îš,

to the man ､

עַ֥ד

‘aḏ

כַּלֹּת֖וֹ

kal·lō·ṯōw

he has finished

לֶאֱכֹ֥ל

le·’ĕ·ḵōl

. וְלִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃

wə·liš·tō·wṯ.

､ וִיהִ֣י

wî·hî

Then it shall be ､

､ בְשָׁכְב֗וֹ

ḇə·šā·ḵə·ḇōw,

when he lies down ､

וְיָדַ֙עַתְּ֙

wə·yā·ḏa·‘at

that you shall notice

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַמָּקוֹם֙

ham·mā·qō·wm

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

､ יִשְׁכַּב־

yiš·kaḇ-

he lies ､

שָׁ֔ם

šām,

､ וּבָ֛את

ū·ḇāṯ

and you shall go in ､

וְגִלִּ֥ית

wə·ḡil·lîṯ

､ מַרְגְּלֹתָ֖יו

mar·gə·lō·ṯāw

[ושכבתי]

wə·šā·ḵā·ḇə·tî

and

– (וְשָׁכָ֑בְתְּ)

wə·šā·ḵā·ḇət;

וְהוּא֙

wə·hū

and he

יַגִּ֣יד

yag·gîḏ

will tell

לָ֔ךְ

lāḵ,

אֵ֖ת

’êṯ

-

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

. תַּעַשִֽׂין׃‪‬‪‬

ta·‘ă·śîn.

you should do .

וַתֹּ֖אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

אֵלֶ֑יהָ

’ê·le·hā;

to her

כֹּ֛ל

kōl

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

תֹּאמְרִ֥י

tō·mə·rî

you say to me

(אֵלַ֖י)

’ê·lay

-

. אֶֽעֱשֶֽׂה׃

’e·‘ĕ·śeh.

I will do .

וַתֵּ֖רֶד

wat·tê·reḏ

So she went down

､ הַגֹּ֑רֶן

hag·gō·ren;

to the threshing floor ､

וַתַּ֕עַשׂ

wat·ta·‘aś

and did

כְּכֹ֥ל

kə·ḵōl

according to all

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

צִוַּ֖תָּה

ṣiw·wat·tāh

. חֲמוֹתָֽהּ׃

ḥă·mō·w·ṯāh.

her mother-in-law .

וַיֹּ֨אכַל

way·yō·ḵal

And after had eaten

בֹּ֤עַז

bō·‘az

､ וַיֵּשְׁתְּ֙

way·yê·šət

and drunk ､

､ וַיִּיטַ֣ב

way·yî·ṭaḇ

and was cheerful ､

לִבּ֔וֹ

lib·bōw,

וַיָּבֹ֕א

way·yā·ḇō

and he went

לִשְׁכַּ֖ב

liš·kaḇ

בִּקְצֵ֣ה

biq·ṣêh

at the end

– הָעֲרֵמָ֑ה

hā·‘ă·rê·māh;

of the heap of grain –

וַתָּבֹ֣א

wat·tā·ḇō

､ בַלָּ֔ט

ḇal·lāṭ,

וַתְּגַ֥ל

wat·tə·ḡal

､ מַרְגְּלֹתָ֖יו

mar·gə·lō·ṯāw

. וַתִּשְׁכָּֽב׃

wat·tiš·kāḇ.

and lay down .

וַיְהִי֙

way·hî

And it came to pass

בַּחֲצִ֣י

ba·ḥă·ṣî

at

､ הַלַּ֔יְלָה

hal·lay·lāh,

､ וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד

way·ye·ḥĕ·raḏ

that was startled ､

הָאִ֖ישׁ

hā·’îš

the man

– וַיִּלָּפֵ֑ת

way·yil·lā·p̄êṯ;

and turned himself –

､ וְהִנֵּ֣ה

wə·hin·nêh

and there ､

אִשָּׁ֔ה

’iš·šāh,

שֹׁכֶ֖בֶת

šō·ḵe·ḇeṯ

. מַרְגְּלֹתָֽיו׃

mar·gə·lō·ṯāw.

､ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר

way·yō·mer

And he said ､

מִי־

mî-

؟ אָ֑תּ‪‬

’āt;

you ؟

､ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר

wat·tō·mer,

so she answered ､

אָנֹכִי֙

’ā·nō·ḵî

I [am]

ר֣וּת

rūṯ

. אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ

’ă·mā·ṯe·ḵā,

your maidservant .

וּפָרַשְׂתָּ֤

ū·p̄ā·raś·tā

כְנָפֶ֙ךָ֙

ḵə·nā·p̄e·ḵā

עַל־

‘al-

– אֲמָ֣תְךָ֔

’ă·mā·ṯə·ḵā,

your maidservant –

כִּ֥י

kî

גֹאֵ֖ל

ḡō·’êl

are a kinsman-redeemer

. אָֽתָּה׃

’āt·tāh.

､ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

way·yō·mer,

And he said ､

בְּרוּכָ֨ה

bə·rū·ḵāh

אַ֤תְּ

’at

לַֽיהוָה֙

Yah·weh

. בִּתִּ֔י

bit·tî,

הֵיטַ֛בְתְּ

hê·ṭaḇt

For you have shown more

חַסְדֵּ֥ךְ

ḥas·dêḵ

הָאַחֲר֖וֹן

hā·’a·ḥă·rō·wn

at the end

מִן־

min-

､ הָרִאשׁ֑וֹן

hā·ri·šō·wn;

at the beginning ､

לְבִלְתִּי־

lə·ḇil·tî-

in that not

לֶ֗כֶת

le·ḵeṯ,

אַחֲרֵי֙

’a·ḥă·rê

､ הַבַּ֣חוּרִ֔ים

hab·ba·ḥū·rîm,

אִם־

’im-

דַּ֖ל

dal

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

or

. עָשִֽׁיר׃

‘ā·šîr.

､ וְעַתָּ֗ה

wə·‘at·tāh,

Now ､

､ בִּתִּי֙

bit·tî

my daughter ､

תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י

tî·rə·’î,

כֹּ֥ל

kōl

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

､ תֹּאמְרִ֖י

you request ､

אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־

’e·‘ĕ·śeh-

I will do

לָּ֑ךְ

lāḵ;

כִּ֤י

kî

יוֹדֵ֙עַ֙

yō·w·ḏê·a‘

כָּל־

kāl-

שַׁ֣עַר

ša·‘ar

of my town

עַמִּ֔י

‘am·mî,

כִּ֛י

kî

אֵ֥שֶׁת

חַ֖יִל

. אָֽתְּ׃

’āt.

וְעַתָּה֙

wə·‘at·tāh

And

כִּ֣י

kî

אָמְנָ֔ם

’ā·mə·nām,

it is true

כִּ֥י

kî

[אם]

– גֹאֵ֖ל

ḡō·’êl

a kinsman-redeemer –

אָנֹ֑כִי

’ā·nō·ḵî;

I [am]

וְגַ֛ם

wə·ḡam

יֵ֥שׁ

yêš

גֹּאֵ֖ל

a kinsman-redeemer

קָר֥וֹב

qā·rō·wḇ

. מִמֶּֽנִּי׃

mim·men·nî.

than I .

לִ֣ינִי ׀

lî·nî

､ הַלַּ֗יְלָה

hal·lay·lāh,

וְהָיָ֤ה

wə·hā·yāh

and it shall be

､ בַבֹּ֙קֶר֙

ḇab·bō·qer

in the morning ､

אִם־

’im-

[that] if

､ יִגְאָלֵ֥ךְ

yiḡ·’ā·lêḵ

he will perform the duty of a close relative for you ､

– טוֹב֙

ṭō·wḇ

good –

– יִגְאָ֔ל

yiḡ·’āl,

let him do it –

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

but if

לֹ֨א

lō

not

יַחְפֹּ֧ץ

yaḥ·pōṣ

לְגָֽאֳלֵ֛ךְ

lə·ḡā·’o·lêḵ

to perform the duty for you

וּגְאַלְתִּ֥יךְ

ū·ḡə·’al·tîḵ

then will perform the duty for you

אָנֹ֖כִי

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

. חַי־

ḥay-

[as] lives .

יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

שִׁכְבִ֖י

šiḵ·ḇî

עַד־

‘aḏ-

. הַבֹּֽקֶר׃

hab·bō·qer.

וַתִּשְׁכַּ֤ב

wat·tiš·kaḇ

[מרגלתו]

mar·gə·lā·ṯaw

-

(מַרְגְּלוֹתָיוֹ֙‪‬‪‬‪‬‪‬)

mar·gə·lō·w·ṯāw

עַד־

‘aḏ-

– הַבֹּ֔קֶר

hab·bō·qer,

וַתָּ֕קָם

wat·tā·qām

[בטרום]

biṭ·rō·wm

(בְּטֶ֛רֶם)

יַכִּ֥יר

yak·kîr

could recognize

אִ֖ישׁ

’îš

אֶת־

’eṯ-

. רֵעֵ֑הוּ

､ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙

And he said ､

אַל־

’al-

not

יִוָּדַ֔ע

yiw·wā·ḏa‘,

do let it be known

כִּי־

בָ֥אָה

ḇā·’āh

הָאִשָּׁ֖ה

hā·’iš·šāh

. הַגֹּֽרֶן׃

hag·gō·ren.

to the threshing floor .

､ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

way·yō·mer,

And he said ､

הָ֠בִי

hā·ḇî

הַמִּטְפַּ֧חַת

ham·miṭ·pa·ḥaṯ

אֲשֶׁר־

’ă·šer-

that [is]

עָלַ֛יִךְ

‘ā·la·yiḵ

on you

וְאֶֽחֳזִי־

wə·’e·ḥo·zî-

and hold

בָ֖הּ

ḇāh

it

וַתֹּ֣אחֶז

wat·tō·ḥez

and when she held

בָּ֑הּ

bāh;

it

וַיָּ֤מָד

way·yā·māḏ

and he measured

שֵׁשׁ־

šêš-

､ שְׂעֹרִים֙

śə·‘ō·rîm

[ephahs] of barley ､

וַיָּ֣שֶׁת

way·yā·šeṯ

and laid [it]

עָלֶ֔יהָ

‘ā·le·hā,

on her

וַיָּבֹ֖א

way·yā·ḇō

. הָעִֽיר׃

hā·‘îr.

into the city .

וַתָּבוֹא֙

wat·tā·ḇō·w

So when she came

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ חֲמוֹתָ֔הּ

ḥă·mō·w·ṯāh,

her mother-in-law ､

､ וַתֹּ֖אמֶר

wat·tō·mer

and she said ､

מִי־

mî-

､ אַ֣תְּ

’at

you ､

؟ בִּתִּ֑י

bit·tî;

וַתַּ֨גֶּד־

wat·tag·geḏ-

לָ֔הּ

lāh,

אֵ֛ת

’êṯ

-

כָּל־

kāl-

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

עָֽשָׂה־

‘ā·śāh-

לָ֖הּ

. הָאִֽישׁ׃

hā·’îš.

the man .

､ וַתֹּ֕אמֶר

And she said ､

שֵׁשׁ־

šêš-

הַשְּׂעֹרִ֥ים

haś·śə·‘ō·rîm

[ephahs] of barley

הָאֵ֖לֶּה

hā·’êl·leh

נָ֣תַן

nā·ṯan

לִ֑י

lî;

me

כִּ֚י

kî

אָמַ֣ר

’ā·mar

(אֵלַ֔י)

’ê·lay,

אַל־

’al-

to me

תָּב֥וֹאִי

tā·ḇō·w·’î

רֵיקָ֖ם

the man

he has concluded

הַדָּבָ֖ר

. הַיּֽוֹם׃

hay·yō·wm.
