Matthew 27:45-56 - Jesus Dies On The Cross

Matthew 27:45-56

45 And from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land, until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

47 Some of those standing there, when they heard this, said, This man is calling for Elijah.

48 And one of them immediately ran and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the rest said, Hold! let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.

50 And Jesus, crying out again with a loud voice, yielded up his spirit. 51 And, lo! the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth, quaked, and the rocks were rent, 52 and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of holy men that slept, arose, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection went into the holy city and appeared to many.

54 And the centurion and they who with him were watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and what was taking place, were exceedingly afraid, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

55 And many women were there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, rendering services to him; 56 among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Mark 15:33-41

33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which is, when interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

35 And some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said, See! he is calling for Elijah. 36 And one ran and filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, Hold! Let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.

37 And Jesus, having uttered a loud cry, expired. 38 And the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom. 39 And the centurion who stood over against him, seeing that he so expired, said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

40 There were also women looking on from a distance; among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; 41 who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and rendered him their services; and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

Luke 23:44-49

44 And it was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 the sun having failed; and the veil of the temple was rent in two. 46 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit! And having said this, he expired.

47 And the centurion, seeing what was done, gave glory to God, saying, Surely this was a righteous man. 48 And all the multitudes that had come together to that sight, when they had seen the things which were done, returned, beating their breasts. 49 And all his acquaintances stood at a distance, and women that came with him from Galilee, beholding these things.

John 19:28-37

28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now finished, in order that the Scripture might be accomplished, saith, I thirst. 29 A vessel was brought full of vinegar; and putting a sponge filled with vinegar upon a stalk of hyssop, they raised it to his mouth.

30 When therefore he had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished! and he bowed his head, and yielded up his spirit.

31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the sabbath, for that sabbath was a great day, besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was already dead, they broke not his legs; 34 but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and immediately there came out blood and water. 35 And he that hath seen hath borne witness, and his witness is true; and he knoweth that he saith what is true, that ye also may believe. 36 For these things came to pass, that the scripture might be fulfilled, "A bone of him shall not be broken." 37 And again another scripture saith, "They shall look on him whom they pierced."
