One that pleads the cause of another. In its technical sense, the office was unknown to the Jews till they became subject to the Romans. It is applied to Christ as our intercessor, 1Jo 2:1; compare Ro 8:34; Heb 7:25; and to the Holy Spirit, as our teacher and comforter, Joh 14:16; 15:26.

And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceedeth from the Father, he will testify concerning me.
Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, or rather that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come to God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
