properly the absence of all colour. In Pr 7:9 the Hebrew word means, as in the margin of the Revised Version, "the pupil of the eye." It is translated "apple" of the eye in De 32:10; Ps 17:8; Pr 7:2. It is a different word which is rendered "black" in Le 13:31,37; Song 1:5; 5:11; 6/2/type/leb'>Zec 6:2,6. It is uncertain what the "black marble" of Es 1:6 was which formed a part of the mosaic pavement.

But if the priest examines the diseased area of the skin's infection and {if} its appearance is not deeper than the skin and there is no black hair in it, then the priest shall confine the afflicted person [with] the diseased area of skin [for] seven days.

Under the figure of a bride the remnant of Israel says, I am 'black,' describing herself as having become dark or swarthy by the rays of the sun; the scorching effect of affliction, Cant. 1:5, 6: 'burning instead of beauty.' Isa 3:24. The kingdom of the Medes and Persians is described as a chariot with 'black' horses, 6/2/type/leb'>Zec 6:2,6; and in the Revelation, in the third seal a rider on a 'black' horse betokens scarcity. Re 6:5. It is symbolical of what is dismal and threatening.
