(1) a person employed to perform culinary service. In early times among the Hebrews cooking was performed by the mistress of the household (Ge 18:2-6; Jg 6:19), and the process was very expeditiously performed (Ge 27:3-4,9-10). Professional cooks were afterwards employed (1Sa 8:13; 9:23). Few animals, as a rule, were slaughtered (other than sacrifices), except for purposes of hospitality (Ge 18:7; Lu 15:23). The paschal lamb was roasted over a fire (Ex 12:8-9; 2Ch 35:13). Cooking by boiling was the usual method adopted (Le 8:31; Ex 16:23). No cooking took place on the Sabbath day (Ex 35:3).

He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men stood at a little distance from him. He ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the ground And said, My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant, I beg of you. read more. Go now to the flock, and from it bring me two good and suitable kids; and I will make them into appetizing meat for your father, such as he loves. And you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat and declare his blessing upon you before his death.
They shall eat the flesh that night roasted; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it. Eat not of it raw nor boiled at all with water, but roasted -- "its head, its legs, and its inner parts.
He said to them, The Lord has said, Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord; bake and boil what you will bake and boil today; and all that remains over put aside for you to keep until morning.
And Moses said to Aaron and his sons, Boil the flesh at the door of the Tent of Meeting and there eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecration and ordination, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat it.
Then Gideon went in and prepared a kid and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour. The meat he put in a basket and the broth in a pot, and brought them to Him under the oak and presented them.
He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers.
And Samuel said to the cook, Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, Set it aside.
And bring out that [wheat-]fattened calf and kill it; and let us revel and feast and be happy and make merry,
