What theologians speak of as the 'decrees of God,' and describe as one, immutable, eternal, all-embracing, free, etc., do not receive this designation in Scripture. The equivalents are to be sought for under such headings as Election, Predestination, Providence, Reprobate. In the English Version the term is frequently used in Esther, Ezra, Daniel, with different Heb. and Aramaic words, for royal decrees (in Da 6 RV 'interdict'; in Da 2:9 RV 'law,' elsewhere 'decree'). When he made a decree for the rain, And a way for the lightning of the thunder;
I will tell of the decree: Jehovah said unto me, Thou art my son; This day have I begotten thee.
Who laid the foundations of the earth, That it should not be moved for ever.
Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; That they turn not again to cover the earth.

He hath also established them for ever and ever: He hath made a decree which shall not pass away.
When he gave to the sea its bound, That the waters should not transgress his commandment, When he marked out the foundations of the earth;
Fear ye not me? saith Jehovah: will ye not tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it? and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it.

The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the lowest of men.
this is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which is come upon my lord the king:
before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of Jehovah come upon you, before the day of Jehovah's anger come upon you.
