a lair of wild beasts (Ps 10:9; 104:22; Job 37:8); the hole of a venomous reptile (Isa 11:8); a recess for secrecy "in dens and caves of the earth" (Heb 11:38); a resort of thieves (Mt 21:13; Mr 11:17). Daniel was cast into "the den of lions" (Da 6:16-17). Some recent discoveries among the ruins of Babylon have brought to light the fact that the practice of punishing offenders against the law by throwing them into a den of lions was common.

Then the beast goes into its lair. It remains in its den.
He lurks in his hiding place like a lion in his den. He hides there to catch oppressed people. He catches oppressed people after he draws them into his net.
They withdraw at sunrise and lie down in their dens.
The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra. The weaned child will put his hand on the viper's den.
Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and threw him into the den of lions. The king spoke to Daniel: Your God whom you serve will deliver you. A stone was placed over the mouth of the den. The king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.
He told them: It is written, 'My house is to be named a house of prayer,' but you are making it a hiding place of thieves.
When he taught, he said: Is it not written, my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? But you have made it a den of robbers.
The world was not worthy of them! They wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
Hastings
The five Heb. words represented by 'den' signify respectively 'hollow place' (Isa 32:14), 'thicket' (Ps 10:9), 'place of ambush' (Job 37:8), 'dwelling' (Job 38:40), 'light hole' or 'eyeball' (Isa 11:8); but the last passage, may be corrupt.

Because the palace has been abandoned, the populated city forsaken. Hill and watchtower have become caves forever. They will be a delight for wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks.
