The son of Shealtiel, and related to the house of David. He was the leader of one of the bands that returned from the Captivity (Ezr 2:2; Ne 7:7), and was at one time pechah or 'governor' of Judah (Hag 1:1 etc.). On the question of his Identity with Sheshbazzar, see Sheshbazzar. As the servant of the Lord, and as His specially chosen one, he is designated as one who is to be specially honoured in the 'day of the Lord,' for which reason he is called the 'signet' (Hag 2:23). Both Haggal and Zechariah point to Zerubbabel and the high priest Joshua as those who are to re-build the Temple (Hag 1:1-8; 2:9-18; Zec 4); this was done, though after consideraable delay owing to enemies of the Jews; it was only after a special appeal had been made to Darius that the work was proceeded with unimpeded (Ezr 6:1 ff.). From Zechariah's fourth 'night-vision' (Zec 3:1 ff., esp. Zec 3:8-10) we learn that Zerubbabel was looked upon as the coming Messiah; in this night-vision it is pointed out that Joshua and his fellows are a pledge and an earnest of the near approach of the Messiah

In the second year of king Darius, in the sixth month, the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the Prophet Haggai, unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel the prince of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jozadak the high priest, saying, "Thus speaketh the LORD of Hosts, and sayeth, 'This people doth say: The time is not yet come to build up the LORD's house.'" read more. Then spake the LORD by the Prophet Haggai, and said, "Ye yourselves can find time to dwell in sealed houses: and shall this house lie waste? Consider now your own ways in your hearts, sayeth the LORD of Hosts. Ye sow much, but ye bring little in; Ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled; ye deck yourselves, but ye are not warm; and he that earneth any wage, putteth it in a broken purse. Thus sayeth the LORD of Hosts: Consider your own ways in your hearts, get you up to the mountain, fetch wood, and build up the house: that it may be acceptable unto me, and that I may show mine honour, sayeth the LORD.
Thus the glory of the last house shall be greater than the first, sayeth the LORD of Hosts: and in this place will I give peace, sayeth the LORD of Hosts.'" The twenty fourth day of the ninth month in the second year of king Darius, came the word of the LORD unto the Prophet Haggai, saying, read more. "Thus sayeth the LORD God of hosts: Ask the priests concerning the law, and say, 'If one bear holy flesh in his coat lap, and with his lap do touch the bread, pottage, wine, oil or any other meat: shall it be holy also?'" The priests answered and said, "No." Then said Haggai, "Now if one being defiled with a dead carcass, touch any of these: shall it also be unclean?" The Priests gave answer and said, "Yea, it shall be unclean." Then Haggai answered, and said, "Even so is this people and this nation before me, sayeth the LORD: and so are all the works of their hands, yea and all that they offer, is unclean. And now, I pray you, consider from this day forth, and how it hath gone with you afore - before there was laid one stone upon another in the temple of the LORD - that when ye came to a corn heap of twenty bushels, there were scarce ten: and that when ye came to the wine press for to pour out fifty pots of wine, there were scarce twenty. For I smote you with heat, blasting and hailstones in all the labors of your hands: yet was there none of you, that would turn unto me, sayeth the LORD. Consider then from this day forth and afore, namely, from the twenty fourth day of the ninth month, unto the day that the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid: Mark it well,
And as for thee, O Zerubbabel, sayeth the LORD of Hosts, thou son of Shealtiel my servant: I will take thee, sayeth the LORD, at the same time: and make thee as a seal. For I have chosen thee, sayeth the LORD of Hosts.'"
And he showed me Joshua the high priest, standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan stood at his righthand to resist him.
"'Hear O Joshua thou high priest: thou and thy friends that dwell before thee, for they are wondrous people. Behold, I will bring forth the branch of my servant:
"'Hear O Joshua thou high priest: thou and thy friends that dwell before thee, for they are wondrous people. Behold, I will bring forth the branch of my servant: for lo, the stone that I have laid before Joshua: upon one stone shall be seven eyes. Behold, I will hew him out, sayeth the LORD of Hosts, and take away the sin of that land in one day.
for lo, the stone that I have laid before Joshua: upon one stone shall be seven eyes. Behold, I will hew him out, sayeth the LORD of Hosts, and take away the sin of that land in one day. Then shall every man call for his neighbour, under the vine and under the fig tree, sayeth the LORD of Hosts.

And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 'Take of the prisoners that are come from Babylon: namely, Heldai, Tobijah and Jedaiah: and come thou the same day, and go into the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah. read more. Then take gold and silver, and make crowns thereof, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Jozadak, the high priest. And speak unto him, 'Thus sayeth the LORD of Hosts: Behold the man whose name is the branch: and he that shall spring up after him, shall build up the temple of the LORD. Yea, even he shall build up the temple of the LORD. He shall bear the praise, he shall sit upon the LORD's throne, and have the domination. A priest shall he be also upon his throne, and a peaceable counsel shall be betwixt them both.
