but ye renounced him that was holy and just; you interceeded for the life of a murderer, but killed the prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. it is the faith which we have in him, that has procured strength to this man whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him, hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

for we conclude, that a man is justified by faith, without observing the legal rites. is God the God of the Jews only, and not of the Gentiles? surely he is of the Gentiles too; since it is one God, who will justify both the Jews and the Gentiles, through faith. read more.
do we then make the law useless by our doctrine of faith? by no means; on the contrary, it is we that observe the law.

What shall we hence conclude? that the Gentiles who sought not after justice, have obtained justice, even to that which is by faith:

but that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, is evident: for, " the just shall live by faith." now the law does not justify by FAITH, but says, "he that DOES these things shall live by them." Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. (for it is written, " cursed is every one, that hangeth upon a tree.") that the blessing promised to Abraham might come on the Gentiles thro' Jesus Christ; that we by believing might receive the spirit that was promised.

for by grace are ye saved, thro' faith (and that not from us: it is the gift of God) but not by works, so that no man can boast: for he hath made us a-new, and form'd us by Christ Jesus to do good works, for which God had before prepared us, that we might live in them.

Now faith is the foundation of our hopes of happiness, and the persuasion we have about things not evident to our senses. and it was for their faith that our fore-fathers acquired so great a reputation. 'Twas likewise through faith that Sara, though barren, received the power of becoming pregnant, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.



Now having called the twelve, he sent them out by two and two, giving them power to exorcize spirits: he order'd them to take nothing for their journey, but a single staff, no scrip, no bread, nor money in their purse: to have but one pair of shoes, and but one coat. read more.

Concerning the Logos, the author of Life, we declare what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have consider'd, and what has been the object of our touch. for the life was manifested, we have seen it, we testify of it, and denounce unto you, that eternal life which was with the father, and was manifested unto us. what we have seen and heard, we declare unto you, that ye also may be of the same society with us: and truly associated with the father, and with his son Jesus Christ.

then Peter and the other apostles made answer, we ought to obey God rather than men. the God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew, and hanged on a tree. him hath God rais'd by his power to be the author of salvation, by giving repentance to Israel, and the remission of their sins. read more.
and we are his witnesses in what we say, and so is the holy spirit, whom God hath given to those that obey him.

you know, how his fame spread from Galilee through all Judea, after the baptism which John had preach'd: how Jesus of Nazareth divinely inspired by the holy spirit, and with miraculous power, went about doing good, and healing all that were under the oppression of the devil: because God was with him. we are witnesses of all his transactions, both in Judea, and at Jerusalem. however, they put him to death, even that of the cross. read more.
but God raised him up the third day, and shewed him openly, not to all the people, but to those witnesses, which God had before chosen: to us, I say, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. and he commanded us to publish, and to testify to the people, that he was the person whom God had constituted to be the judge of the living, and of the dead. he is the person to whom all the prophets give this attestation, that all who believe in him, shall receive remission of sins, by his authority.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. he came as a witness, to represent what he knew of the light, that by his means all might be convinc'd. he was not that Light, but was sent to testify of that light. read more.
HE was the true Light who came into the world, to enlighten every man. he was in the world, even the world that had been made by him, but the world knew him not. he came unto his own, and his own received him not. but to as many as received him, and believed on him, he granted the privilege of being the sons of God. a birth which they had not from circumcision, nor from the constitution of the body, nor the institution of man, but from God. The Logos became incarnate, and had his tabernacle among us, being full of grace and truth; and we contemplated his glory, such glory as the Monogenes derived from the father. it was of him that John bare witness, when he made this declaration, "this was he of whom I said, he that cometh after me, was before me; for he did indeed exist before me."

that all men should honour the son, even as they honour the father. he that honoureth not the son, honoureth not the father who hath sent him. I declare unto you, he that heareth my doctrine, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come under condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. I declare unto you, the time is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the son of God: and they that hear shall live. read more.

You search the scriptures, for you think by their means to have eternal life, and they are the very writings which do testify of me. yet you will not come to me, that ye may have life. I do not by this seek your applause. for this I know of you, that you are not possess'd with any love for God. I am come in my father's name, and you receive me not: if another should come in his own name, him you will receive. how can you believe, who are catching at honour one from another, regardless of that glory that comes from God only? don't imagine that I shall accuse you to my father: even Moses himself in whom you confide, will be your accuser. for had you believed Moses, you would have believed me: since he has spoke of me in his writings. but if you don't believe what he has writ, how should you believe what I say?



Being therefore in his presence, they asked him, saying, Lord, is this the time when you will restore again the kingdom to Israel? and he said to them, it is not for you, to know the times or the seasons, which the father hath reserv'd in his own disposal. but ye shall receive the influence of the holy spirit, which will descend upon you: and ye shall be witnesses for me, in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth. read more.

Simon Peter the servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who equally share with us in the advantages of faith, thro' the veracity of our God, and of Jesus Christ. may the divine favour and felicity be poured upon you, by the knowledge of God, and of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is thus his divine power has given us every thing conducive to life and piety, by making us acquainted with him, who has called us by his illustrious power; read more.
by which we have receiv'd the most inestimable promises, that thereby you might become partakers of the divine perfections, after having escap'd from the corruption of a sensual world. Do you on your part employ all your care in adding to your faith, fortitude: to fortitude, knowledge: to knowledge, temperance: to temperance, patience: to patience, piety: to piety, fraternal affection: and to fraternal affection, universal benevolence. for if you are possess'd of these virtues and improve therein, they will prevent the knowledge you have of our Lord Jesus Christ from being useless to others, and unprofitable to yourselves. but he that is destitute of them is blind or short-sighted, having forgot he was purified from his past sins. Wherefore be the more diligent, my brethren, to secure your vocation and election by your virtuous actions, for by so doing, you will never relapse: and thus you will have a free admittance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. for this reason I shall never omit to put you in mind of these things, however knowing you are already, and settled in the truth. whilst I am alive, I think it my duty to awaken you by my admonitions: knowing that I must soon leave this tabernacle, as our Lord Jesus Christ has signify'd to me. However, I shall inculcate these things so as to make you continually remember them, even after my departure. for, the information we gave you of the powerful advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, did not proceed from any artfully contriv'd fables, we our selves having been spectators of his majesty.

The REVELATION of Jesus Christ, which God gave him, to shew to his servants things which must shortly come to pass; this he signified by his angel whom he dispatch'd to his servant John: who publish'd the divine message, and gave his attestation to every thing that he saw concerning Jesus Christ.
