And the disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come? And he answering said, Elijah indeed cometh, and will restore all things. But I say to you, that Elijah hath already come, and they knew him not, but did with him whatever they would. So also is the Son of man to suffer by them.

And he said to them, Elijah cometh first, and restoreth all things. And how hath it been written of the Son of man? that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. But I say to you that Elijah hath come, and they have done to him whatever they would; as it hath been written concerning him.

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. They said therefore to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us; what sayest thou of thyself? And they were sent from the Pharisees; and they asked him and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?
