Assyria » As a power, was » Proud and haughty
Who is it you mocked and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised [your] voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel! You have mocked the Lord through your messengers. You have said: With my many chariots I have gone up to the heights of the mountains, to the far recesses of Lebanon. I cut down its tallest cedars, its choice cypress trees. I came to its farthest outpost, its densest forest. I dug [wells], and I drank foreign waters. I dried up all the streams of Egypt with the soles of my feet.
Assyria » As a power, was » An instrument of God's vengeance
Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger- the staff in their hands is My wrath. I will send him against a godless nation; I will command him [to go] against a people destined for My rage, to take spoils, to plunder, and to trample them down like clay in the streets.
the Lord will whistle
that is at the farthest streams of the Nile
and to the bee that is in the land of Assyria.

Then Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria came against Ahaz; he oppressed him and did not give him support. Although Ahaz plundered the Lord's temple and the palace of the king and of the rulers and gave the plunder to the king of Assyria, it did not help him.
Assyria » As a power, was » Most formidable
like a devastating hail storm,
like a storm with strong flooding waters.
He will bring it across the land with His hand.
Assyria » As a power, was » Cruel and destructive
this is not what he plans.
It is his intent to destroy
and to cut off many nations.
Assyria » As a power, was » Intolerant and oppressive
your wound is severe.
All who hear the news about you
will clap their hands because of you,
for who has not experienced
your constant cruelty?
Assyria » As a power, was » Selfish and reserved
like a wild donkey going off on its own.
Ephraim has paid for love.
Babylon » As a power, was » Cruel and destructive
who destroyed its cities
and would not release the prisoners to return home?”
I profaned My possession,
and I placed them under your control.
You showed them no mercy;
you made your yoke very heavy on the elderly.
this is the Lord’s declaration—
you devastate the whole earth.
I will stretch out My hand against you,
roll you down from the cliffs,
and turn you into a charred mountain.
Look! I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter, impetuous nation that marches across the earth's open spaces to seize territories not its own. They are fierce and terrifying; their views of justice and sovereignty stem from themselves.
Babylon » As a power, was » An instrument of God's vengeance on other nations
making the whole earth drunk.
The nations drank her wine;
therefore, the nations go mad.
I profaned My possession,
and I placed them under your control.
You showed them no mercy;
you made your yoke very heavy on the elderly.
Babylon » As a power, was » Grand and stately
Virgin Daughter Babylon.
Sit on the ground without a throne,
Daughter Chaldea!
For you will no longer be called pampered and spoiled.
sit in silence
For you will no longer be called mistress of kingdoms.
Babylon » As a power, was » Arrogant
You said to yourself: "I will ascend to the heavens; I will set up my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mount of the [gods'] assembly, in the remotest parts of the North. I will ascend above the highest clouds; I will make myself like the Most High."
Babylon » As a power, was » Covetous
rich in treasures,
your end has come,
your life thread is cut.
Babylon » As a power, was » Secure and self-confident
You said: I will be the mistress forever. You did not take these things to heart or think about their outcome. "So now hear this, lover of luxury, who sits securely, who says to herself: I, and no one else, will never be a widow or know the loss of children.
Babylon » As a power, was » Oppressive
you will sing this song of contempt about the king of Babylon and say:
How the oppressor has quieted down,
and how the raging has become quiet!

Egypt » As a power, was » Treacherous
Look, you are trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff that will enter and pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it. This is how Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who trust in him.
Then all the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am the Lord, for they have been a staff [made] of reed to the house of Israel. When Israel grasped you by the hand, you splintered, tearing all their shoulders; when they leaned on you, you shattered and made all their hips unsteady.
Egypt » As a power, was » Proud and arrogant
Speak to him and say: This is what the Lord God says:
Look, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
the great monster lying in the middle of his Nile,
who says, ‘My Nile is my own;
I made it for myself.’

who says, ‘My Nile is my own;
I made it for myself.’
Those who support Egypt will fall,
and its proud strength will collapse.
From Migdol to Syene
they will fall within it by the sword.
This is the declaration of the Lord God.
Egypt » As a power, was » Ambitious of conquests
and its waters churn like rivers.
He boasts, “I will go up, I will cover the earth;
I will destroy cities with their residents.”
Egypt » As a power, was » Pompous
by the swords of warriors,
all of them ruthless men from the nations.
They will ravage Egypt’s pride,
and all its hordes will be destroyed.
Egypt » As a power, was » Mighty
They set out to go down to Egypt without asking My advice, in order to seek shelter under Pharaoh's protection and take refuge in Egypt's shadow. But Pharaoh's protection will become your shame, and refuge in Egypt's shadow your disgrace.
