And his disciples asked Him, saying, Why then do the scribes say, that Elias must first come? Jesus said unto them, Elias doth indeed come first, and shall set all things right. But I tell you that Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but did what they pleased to him: and so is the Son of man to suffer by them.

And He answered and told them, Elias doth indeed come first, and settle all things: He told them likewise how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things and be used contemptuously. But I tell you, that Elias is come, and they have done to him whatever they would, as it is written of him.

And they asked him, What then? art thou Elias? And he said, I am not. Art thou a prophet? and he answered, No. Therefore said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us: What dost thou say of thy self? and he said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of the Lord," according to Esaias the prophet. read more.
Now they that were sent, were of the pharisees: and they asked him, and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elias, nor a prophet?

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites to ask him, Who art thou? he confessed, and denied not; but declared openly, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? art thou Elias? And he said, I am not. Art thou a prophet? and he answered, No. read more.

This is He of whom I said, After me cometh a man, who is preferred before me: for He was before me. And I knew Him not: but therefore came I baptizing with water, that He might be made known to Israel. And John testified saying, I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it abode upon Him. And I knew Him not: but He that sent me to baptize with water, said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on Him, the same is he that baptizeth with the Holy Spirit. And I saw it, and therefore testified that this is the Son of God.

He was indeed a burning and shining light, and for a while ye willingly rejoiced in his light.

John having preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, Whom do ye take me to be? I am not He: but behold there cometh one after me, the shoes of whose feet I am not worthy to unloose.

But what went ye out to see? a man clad in fine attire? they that wear rich clothes are in the palaces of kings. But what did ye indeed go out to see? a prophet?
