John baptized in the wilderness, preaching the baptism of a change of mind for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

AND this is the testimony of John, when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, Who are you? And he confessed and denied not, and confessed, I am not the Christ. This man came for a testimony, to testify of the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but to testify of the light.

He was a burning and shining light, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.

John having preached before his coming the baptism of a change of mind to all the people of Israel. And when John completed his course, he said, Who do you suppose I am? I am not [the Christ]; but behold, there comes after me one the sandal of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.
