Now the chief priests and elders, and the whole council sought false-witness against Jesus, that they might put Him to death: but found none. And tho' many false witnesses came, they found none to their purpose. But at last came two false witnesses and said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. read more.
And the high priest stood up and said to Him, Dost thou make no answer? what do these men testify against thee? but Jesus made no reply. Then the high priest said to Him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us, if thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, It is as thou hast said: and I tell you, hereafter ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy, what need have we more of witnesses? now ye have heard his blasphemy, what think ye? and they answered, He ought to be put to death. Then did they spit in his face, and beat Him about the head; and some struck Him with rods, saying, Divine to us, thou Christ, who it is that smote thee.

Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world, I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, whither the Jews are continually resorting: and in secret have said nothing. Why dost thou ask me? ask them that heard me, what I have said unto them: for they know what I have said.

And as soon as it was morning all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, how to get Him executed: so they bound Him and led Him away, and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the Roman governor.
And Pilate called together the chief priests, and the rulers, and the people, and said unto them, Ye have brought to me this man as one that perverteth the people: and behold I have examined Him before you, and found nothing chargeable on Him, of the things you alledge against Him: nor Herod neither; for I sent you to him, and behold nothing worthy of death is proved upon Him. read more.
I will therefore chastise Him, and so release Him. Now he was obliged to release one to them at the feast. And they all cried out, saying, Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas: (who for a riot in the city, and for murder, was committed to prison:) Pilate therefore spake to them again, being desirous to release Jesus. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and sat down together, Peter also sat down among them: and a servant-maid seeing him as he sat by the fire, and looking hard at him, said, This fellow was also with Him: read more.
But he denied Him, saying, Woman, I do not know Him. And after a little while another person seeing him said, And thou art one of them: but Peter said, Man, I am not. And about an hour after, another confidently affirmed saying, In truth this fellow also was with Him; for he is a Galilean too: but Peter answered, Man, I know not what thou sayst. And immediately, while he was yet speaking, the cock crew. And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter; and Peter called to mind the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, Before the cock crow thou wilt deny me thrice. And Peter went out and wept bitterly. And Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. And that other disciple being known to the high priest went in with Jesus into the high-priest's hall. But Peter stood at the door without: the other disciple therefore, who was known to the high-priest, went out and spake to her that kept the door, and brought Peter in. Then saith the maid, that kept the door, to Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? and he said, I am not. read more.

Therefore Pilate went out to them, and said, What accusation do ye bring against this man? They answered him, If He were not a malefactor, we should not have delivered Him to thee. Then said Pilate to them, Take Him, and judge Him according to your law. But the Jews said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: that what Jesus had said might be fulfilled, signifying by what death He should die.

Then said Jesus to him, Put up thy sword into it's place; for they that take the sword shall perish by the sword: dost thou think that I cannot now apply to my Father, and He will send me more than twelve legions of angels? but how then should the scriptures be fulfilled, which say that thus it must be? Then said Jesus to the multitudes, Ye are come out as against a thief with swords and clubs to take me, whereas I sat with you day after day teaching in the temple, and ye did not seize me: but all this is done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, who had said to him, before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

And he went out into the porch, and the cock crew. And the maid seeing him again said to them that stood by, This is one of them: and he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by, said to Peter again, Thou art certainly one of them: for thou art a Galilean, and thy speech is like theirs. But he began to curse and swear saying, I do not know this man of whom ye speak: And the cock crowed a second time. Then Peter called to mind the word which Jesus had said to him, Before the cock crow twice thou wilt deny me thrice. And he covered his face and wept.
