Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

Hypocrites! well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you, saying, "This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men."
And there come together to him the Pharisees, and some of the scribes, who came from Jerusalem; and seeing some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is, unwashed hands, (for the Pharisees, and all the Jews, unless they wash their hands often, do not eat, holding fast the tradition of the elders;
