Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. read more.
And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him.

The baptism of Johnwhere was it from? From heaven or from men?" And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?'

John came baptizing in the wilderness, and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the land of Judea, and the people from Jerusalem, went out to him and they were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And immediately coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove.

When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was also baptized. And as he was praying, the heaven was opened

(And when they heard him, all the people, even the tax collectors, justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

They asked him, "Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" John answered them, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.

This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel."

I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'

Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came and were baptized.

He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there he stayed.


You know what has happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached:

And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism." Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus."



And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire." As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ, John answered them all, "I baptize you with water; but one mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." read more.
And with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the other evil things Herod had done, added this to them all, that he shut up John in prison. When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was also baptized. And as he was praying, the heaven was opened

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.' I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel." read more.
And John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. Jesus replied, "Elijah is coming first and will restore all things.

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way"; "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.'" John came baptizing in the wilderness, and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. read more.

And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God, with which the sunrise from on high will visit us; read more.
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."

He came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness of the light.


Then they said to him, "Who are you? Give us an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said." Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. read more.

He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a time in his light.

Before his coming John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was completing his course, he said, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.'


And he preached, saying, "After me comes One who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified behold, he is baptizing, and all are going to him." John answered, "A man can receive only what is given to him from heaven. You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but I have been sent before him. He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now full. He must increase, but I must decrease. "He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth belongs to the earth, and of the earth he speaks. He who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard; yet no one receives his testimony. He who has received his testimony has certified that God is true. For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him."

There is another who bears witness of me, and I know that the testimony which he bears of me is true. You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.

And many came to him and they said, "John performed no sign, but all that John said about this man was true."
