And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.

And they said, Some, John the Baptist; but some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.

And the disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come? And he answering said, Elijah indeed cometh, and will restore all things. But I say to you, that Elijah hath already come, and they knew him not, but did with him whatever they would. So also is the Son of man to suffer by them.

And he said to them, Elijah cometh first, and restoreth all things. And how hath it been written of the Son of man? that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. But I say to you that Elijah hath come, and they have done to him whatever they would; as it hath been written concerning him.

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. They said therefore to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us; what sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am "a voice of one crying aloud in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord," as said Isaiah the prophet. read more.
And they were sent from the Pharisees; and they asked him and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?

And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John his brother, and leadeth them up into a high mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone as the sun; and his garments became white as the light. And lo! there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. read more.
And Peter answering said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if thou wilt, I will make here three tents; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While he was yet speaking, lo! a bright cloud overshadowed them; and lo! a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; hear him." And the disciples hearing it, fell on their face, and were exceedingly afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell what hath been seen to no one, until the Son of man hath risen from the dead. Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptist.

And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter and James and John, and leadeth them up into a high mountain apart by themselves; and he was transfigured before them. And his garments became glistening, very white, so as no fuller on earth can whiten. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. read more.
And Peter answering saith to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tents, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah. For he knew not what to answer; for they were struck with terror. And there came a cloud overshadowing them; and a voice came out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son; hear him. And suddenly looking round, they no longer saw any one but Jesus alone with themselves. And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them to give no account of what they had seen to any one, till the Son of man should have risen from the dead. And they kept these words in mind, questioning one another what rising from the dead might mean. And they asked him, saying, How is it that the Pharisees and scribes say that Elijah must come first? And he said to them, Elijah cometh first, and restoreth all things. And how hath it been written of the Son of man? that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. But I say to you that Elijah hath come, and they have done to him whatever they would; as it hath been written concerning him.

And it came to pass about eight days after this discourse, that he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up into the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was changed, and his raiment became white and glistening. And lo! two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah; read more.
who appeared in glory, and spoke of his departure which he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem. But Peter and those who were with him were weighed down with sleep. But when they awoke, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. And it came to pass as they were parting from him, that Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tents, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah; not knowing what he said. But as he was saying this, there came a cloud and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is my chosen Son; hear him." And when the voice had come, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it secret, and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

Now when Jesus heard that John had been cast into prison, he withdrew into Galilee.

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, and said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he hath risen from the dead, and therefore do these powers work in him. For Herod had seized John, and bound him, and put him in prison, on account of Herodias, his brother Philips wife. read more.
For John said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. And wishing to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they regarded him as a prophet. But when Herods birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod; whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. And she, being set on by her mother, saith, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist. And the king was sorry; but on account of his oaths, and of those at table with him, he ordered it to be given, and sent and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the damsel; and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

But Herod hearing of it said, John, whom I beheaded, hath risen again. For Herod himself had sent forth and seized John, and bound him in prison, on account of Herodias, his brother Philips wife; for he had married her. For John had said to Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brothers wife. read more.
And Herodias was enraged against him, and wished to put him to death, but could not. For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and was regardful of him; and on hearing him, was in much anxiety, and listened to him gladly. And a convenient day having come, when Herod on his birthday made a supper for his nobles and chief captains and the principal men of Galilee, and the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those at table with him; and the king said to the damsel, Ask of me whatever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. And he swore to her, Whatever thou shalt ask of me, I will give thee, to the half of my kingdom. And she went out and said to her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptizer. And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, saying, I desire that thou wilt give me immediately on a platter the head of John the Baptist. And the king was exceedingly sorry; but on account of his oaths, and of those at table with him, he would not refuse her. And the king immediately sent one of his guards, and ordered his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the damsel; and the damsel gave it to her mother. And his disciples, when they heard of it, came and took up his body, and laid it in a tomb.

But I say to you that Elijah hath come, and they have done to him whatever they would; as it hath been written concerning him.

And giving many other exhortations he published the glad tidings to the people. But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him on account of Herodias the wife of his brother, and on account of all the evil deeds which Herod had done, added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.

There is another who beareth witness of me; and ye know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. Ye have sent to John, and he hath borne witness to the truth. But the testimony which I receive is not from man; but these things I say, that ye may be saved. read more.
He was the burning and shining lamp: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

For John came to you as a preacher of righteousness, and ye did not believe him; but the publicans and the harlots believed him; and ye, when ye had seen it, did not afterward repent, that ye might believe him.

But I say to you that Elijah hath come, and they have done to him whatever they would; as it hath been written concerning him.

But I say to you, that Elijah hath already come, and they knew him not, but did with him whatever they would. So also is the Son of man to suffer by them. Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptist.
