The passage of the scripture which he was reading, was this: As a sheep for the slaughter was he led; and as a lamb before his shearer is dumb, so opened he not his mouth in his humiliation. And they went and found the colt tied near the door without, in the street. And they loosed him. And some of those who were standing there, said to them: Why are you loosing the colt? And they said to them as Jesus had commanded; and they gave them permission. And they brought the colt to Jesus, and put their mantles upon him, and he sat on him. And many spread their mantles in the road, and others cut branches from the trees, and spread them in the road. And those who went before, and those who followed after, cried, saying: Hosanna. And Jesus entered Jerusalem, and went into the temple; and when he had looked around on all things, the hour being now late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

All this was done, that the word might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: Say you to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your king comes to you, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. And the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them; and brought the ass and the colt, and put their mantles on them, and caused him to sit upon them. And a very great multitude spread their mantles in the road: and others cut branches from the trees, and spread them in the road. And when he entered Jerusalem, all the city was moved, and said: Who is this? And the multitude said: This is Jesus the prophet, that is from Nazareth of Galilee.

And it came to pass, that, when he came near to Bethphage and Bethany, to the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying: Go into the opposite village, in which, when you enter, you will find a colt tied, on which no man ever sat. Loose him, and bring him. And if any one ask you why you loose him, thus shall you say to him: The Lord has need of him. read more.
And those who were sent, went, and found as he had said to them. And as they were loosing the colt, the owners of him said to them: Why do you loose the colt? They replied: The Lord has need of him. And they brought him to Jesus, and threw their mantles upon the colt, and set Jesus on him. And as he was going on, they spread their mantles in the road. And when he was now near the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and to praise God, with a loud voice, for all the mighty deeds which they had seen, saying: Blessed is the king that comes in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude, said to him: Teacher, rebuke your disciples. And he answered, and said to them: I say to you, that if these had been silent, the stones would have cried out. And when he came near, he looked upon the city, and wept over it, saying: Hadst thou known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which were for thy peace! But now, they are hid from thy eyes. For the days will come upon thee, when thy enemies will throw up a mound about thee, and inclose thee around, and keep thee in on every side, and will destroy thee and thy children within thee, and will not leave in thee one stone upon another, because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
