Drunkenness » Who should not drink
IT is a true saying, If a man seeks the office of a bishop, he desireth a laudable employment. A bishop then must be irreprehensible, the husband of one wife, temperate, sagacious, respectable, hospitable, well qualified for teaching; not addicted to wine, not using hard words or blows, not greedy of base gain; but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money; read more.
presiding over his own family with propriety, having his children under subjection with all gravity of behaviour: for if a man knoweth not how to order his own family, how shall he take proper care of the church of God? Not a new convert, lest he be puffed up, and fall into the devil's crime. He must also have a fair character from those who are without, that he may not fall into reproach, and into the snare of the devil. The deacons also in like manner must be grave, not doubletongued, not addicting themselves to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. And let these also be first proved, and if found blameless, then let them enter on the deacon's office. Their wives in like manner must be grave women, not addicted to scandal, sober, faithful in all things.

BUT speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: that the elder men be sober, grave, discreet, sound in faith, in love, in patience. That the elder women also be sacredly becoming in their behaviour, not slanderers, not enslaved by much wine, teachers of propriety; read more.
that they instruct the young women to be discreet, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sober, domestic, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not ill reported of. The younger men in like manner exhort to be sober minded. In all things approving thyself as a pattern of good works: in thy teaching, shewing integrity, gravity, incorruptibility, sound discourse, incapable of confutation; that he who is in opposition may be confounded, having nothing faulty to say of you. Let servants be subject to their own masters, in all things to be agreeable to them; not contradicting; not embezzling their property, but demonstrating all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. For the grace of God which leads to salvation hath appeared unto all men, instructing us, that denying ungodliness and worldly affections, we should live soberly and righteously, and godly in the present day;
