To a man like that, this censure by the majority has been sufficient punishment, so you must do the opposite, freely forgive and comfort him, to keep him from being overwhelmed by his excessive sadness. So I beg you in your love to reinstate him entirely.

You must continue teaching this, and continue exhorting and reproving people, with full authority. Let no one belittle you.

If anyone refuses to obey what we have said in this letter, mark that person and stop having anything to do with him, so that he will feel ashamed of it.

"I know what you have done; your hard work and patient endurance; that you cannot tolerate wicked persons; that you have tested those who claimed to be apostles although they were not, and have found them to be imposters,

"Again, if your brother wrongs you, go and while alone with him show him the wrong. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. But if he does not listen to you, take along with you one or two others, so as to have every word confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, report it to the church. And if he refuses to listen to the church, treat him as a heathen and as a tax-collector.

Now this tendency is true. So continue correcting them severely, that they may be healthy in faith,

Brothers, if anybody is caught in the very act of doing wrong, you who are spiritual, in the spirit of gentleness, must set him right; each of you continuing to think of yourself, for you may be tempted too.

but for God to judge those who are outside? You must expel that wicked person from your membership.
