And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on earth despair of nations in bewilderment at the roaring of the sea and its waves, men fainting with fear and apprehension of the things that are to come upon the world, for the powers of the sky will be shaken.
Thus they wrought up to great excitement the crowd and the town magistrates, on their hearing this,
So they kept on shouting, some one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and the majority of them did not know why they had met.
For the message of the cross is nonsense to those who are in the process of being destroyed, but it is the power of God to those who are in the process of being saved.
An unspiritual man does not accept the things that the Spirit of God teaches, for they are nonsense to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are appreciated by spiritual insight.
If the meaning of the good news I preach is covered up at all, it is so only in the case of those who are on the way to destruction. In their case, the god of this world has blinded the eyes of the unbelievers, to keep the glorious light of the good news of Christ, who is the likeness of God, from dawning upon them.
But the Jews kept on wrangling with one another and saying, "How can He give us His flesh to eat?"
And when this sound was heard, the crowd rushed together in great excitement, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were perfectly astounded, and in bewilderment they continued to say, "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?
And all the crowds of people were dumbfounded, and began to say, "He is by no means the Son of David, is He?" But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "This man is not driving out demons except by the help of Beelzebub, the prince of the demons."
And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem kept saying, "He is under the spell of Beelzebub and by the help of the prince of the demons He drives out the demons."
But some of them said, "It is with the help of Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that He is driving the demons out."
Now Herod the governor heard of all that was taking place, and he continued to be puzzled over the reports -- by some that John had risen from the dead, by others that Elijah had appeared, and by still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life. So Herod said, "John I beheaded, but who can this be about whom I hear such reports?" So he was trying to see Him.
At that time Herod the governor heard the reports about Jesus, and said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why the powers are at work through him."
King Herod heard of Him, for His name was now on everybody's lips, and people were saying that John the Baptist had risen from the dead, and that this was why such mighty powers were working in Him. But others were saying that He was Elijah, and still others that He was a prophet like the prophets of old. But when Herod heard of Him, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen from the dead."
Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot again enter his mother's womb and be born, can he?"
And thus they all continued to be astounded and bewildered, and continued to say to each other, "What can this mean?"
Besides, their minds were made dull; for to this day that same veil remains unlifted, whenever they read the Old Covenant; because it is only through union with Christ that it is removed.
And the men were dumbfounded, and said, "What sort of man is this, for even the winds and the sea obey Him!"
They were very much frightened, and said to one another, "Who can He be that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"
Then He said to them, "Where is your faith?" But they were frightened and astounded, and continued to say to one another, "Who can He be? For He gives orders even to the winds and the water, and they obey Him."
Take care of yourselves and of the whole flock, of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, so as to continue to be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood. Because I know that after I have gone violent wolves will break in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will appear who will try, by speaking perversions of truth, to draw away the disciples after them.
and a slave of the Lord must not quarrel but must be gentle to everybody; he must be a skillful teacher, and not resentful under injuries. With gentleness he must correct his opponents, for God might grant them repentance that would lead them to a full knowledge of the truth,
preach the message, stay at it in season and out of season; convince, reprove, exhort people with perfect patience as a teacher. For a time will come when they will not listen to wholesome teaching, but to gratify their own evil desires will surround themselves with teachers who teach to gratify their own evil desires, because their ears are itching so to be tickled,
Continue to obey and to be submissive to your leaders, for they are ever watching in defense of your souls, as men who will have to give account of their trust. Treat them in this way, so that they may work with joy and not with grief.
All Scripture is inspired by God, and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in doing what is right,
until we all attain to unity in faith and to perfect knowledge of the Son of God, namely, to a mature manhood and to a perfect measure of Christ's moral stature; so that we may not be babies any longer, or like sailors tossed about and driven around by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men through their cunning in inventing new methods of error.
And it is my prayer that your love may overflow still more and more, directed by fuller knowledge and keener insight, so that you may always approve the better things, and be men of transparent character and blameless life,
But solid food belongs to full-grown men who on account of constant use have their faculties trained to distinguish good and evil.
Then Peter interrupted and said to Jesus, "Teacher, it is good for us to be here. So let us put up three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." For he did not really know what to say, he was so frightened.
And Peter interrupted, and said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here! If you consent, I will put up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
And just as they were starting to leave Him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah" -- although he did not know what he was saying. But as he was saying this, a cloud came and was circling over them, and they were frightened as the two visitors entered into the cloud.
Then they left the tomb and fled, for they were trembling and bewildered, and they did not tell anybody a single thing about it, for they were afraid to do so.

They went to the tomb early this morning and could not find His body, but came and told us that they had actually had a vision of angels who said He was alive. Then He said to them, "O men sluggish in mind and slow in heart to believe all that the prophets have said!
So many of His disciples, when they heard it, said, "This teaching is hard to take in. Who can listen to it?"
So some of His disciples said to one another, "What does He mean by telling us, 'In just a little while you will not see me, and yet in just a little while after you will see me again,' and 'Because I am going away to the Father'?" So they kept saying, "What does He mean by saying, 'a little while'? We do not know what He is talking about." Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him a question, and so He said to them, "Are you inquiring of one another about this saying of mine, 'In just a little while you will not see me, and yet in just a little while after you will see me again'?
On every side I am ever hard-pressed, but never hemmed in; always perplexed, but never to the point of despair;
For even after I had gotten to Macedonia, my frail, human nature could find no relief; I was crushed with sorrow at every turn -- fighting without and fears within.
O my dear children, I am suffering a mother's birth pangs for you again, until Christ is formed in you. I wish I could be with you right now and change the tone of my speech, for I do not know which way to turn in your case.
I am astonished that you are beginning so soon to turn away from Him who called you by the favor of Christ, to a different good news, which is not really another one; only there are certain people who are trying to unsettle you and want to turn the good news of Christ upside down.
but now, since you have come to know God, or rather have come to be known by Him, how can you turn back to your own crude notions, so weak and worthless, and wish to become slaves to them again?
By our union with the Lord I have confidence in you that you will take no other view of the matter. The man who is unsettling you will certainly pay the penalty for it, no matter who it turns out to be.
But if any one of you is deficient in wisdom, let him ask God who generously gives to everyone and never reproaches one with its lack, and it will be given to him.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send to represent me, will teach you everything Himself, and cause you to remember everything that I have told you.
But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into the whole truth, for He will not speak on His own authority but will tell what is told Him, and will announce to you the things that are to come.
But, as the Scripture says, they are: "Things which eye has never seen and ear has never heard, and never have occurred to human hearts, which God prepared for those who love Him." For God unveiled them to us through His Spirit, for the Spirit by searching discovers everything, even the deepest truths about God.
