While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Then after they had fasted and prayed, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
But Paul chose Silas and left, being commended by the brethren to the grace of the Lord.
And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brethren who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so.
But remember the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a great struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to insult and persecution; and at other times standing side by side with those who were so treated. For you had compassion on the prisoners, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.
And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you stand firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, in no way frightened by your opponents. This is a sign of destruction to them, but of salvation for you and that too, from God. For to you it has been granted for the sake of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for his sake,read more.

choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

And the disciples determined, each according to his ability, to send relief for the brethren living in Judea. And this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.
As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people begged that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath. When the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted what was spoken by Paul, and blasphemed. Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. Since you reject it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us: 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'" When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord; and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord spread through the whole region. But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, and stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.
Now at Iconium they entered together into the Jewish synagogue, and so spoke that a great number believed, both of Jews and of Greeks. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren. So they spent a long time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.read more.
But the people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles. When an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the Jews with their rulers, to mistreat them and to stone them, they became aware of it and fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and to the surrounding country; and there they continued to preach the gospel. At Lystra there was a man sitting who had no strength in his feet, lame from birth, who had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking; and Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well, said with a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet." And he leaped up and began to walk. And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!" Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, because he was the chief speaker, they called Hermes. The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds. But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out "Men, why are you doing this? We also are men, of like nature with you, and bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. In past generations he allowed all the nations to go their own ways; yet he did not leave himself without witness, in that he did good and gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness." Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowds from offering sacrifice to them. But Jews came there from Antioch and Iconium; and having won over the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and entered the city. And the next day he went with Barnabas to Derbe. After they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, "Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God." And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they believed.
Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren, and they sent the following letter with them: "The apostles and the brethren who are elders, to the brethren in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia who are from the Gentiles, greetings. Since we have heard that some persons from us have disturbed you with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions,read more.
it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith;read more.
if service, let us use it in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
For the body is not made up of one member but of many. If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason be any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason be any less a part of the body.read more.
If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But now God has arranged the members in the body, each one of them, just as he desired. If they were all one member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of God's varied grace.
And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you," nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those parts of the body which we think less honorable we treat with the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty,read more.
while our more presentable members have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving the greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
but on the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised (for he who effectually worked for Peter in his apostleship to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles),
Now you are the body of Christ, and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, then those having gifts of healings, helps, administrations, and those speaking in various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?read more.
Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.
You know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints. Now I urge you, brethren, to be subject to such men and to everyone who helps in the work and labors. I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, because they have supplied what was lacking on your part.read more.

And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord assigned to each one. I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.read more.
Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
To one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the working of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another distinguishing between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.read more.
