In those days there went out an ordinance from Caesar Augustus that a census should be taken of all the world. This first census was taken when Cyrenius was proconsul of Syria.

to governors, sent by him for the punishment of evil doers and the praise of those who do well;

At the same time also he hoped that money would be given him by Paul; and on this account sent for him the oftener, and conversed with him.
