Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done. But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; please give her to him in marriage.
He shall not multiply wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.
“If my heart has been enticed by a woman,
Or I have lurked at my neighbor’s doorway,
but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
It shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot,
O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, our fathers, preserve this forever in the intentions of the heart of Your people, and direct their heart to You;
Whom I myself shall behold,
And whom my eyes will see and not another.
My heart faints within me!
Do not trust in oppression
And do not vainly hope in robbery;
If riches increase, do not set your heart upon them.
And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not keep worrying.
