When I formerly writ to you, not to keep company with the vicious: I did not mean the vicious Gentiles, the misers, the raparees, or with idolaters; for then you must have gone out of the world.

Now as to the question you writ to me about; "whether it is best for a man not to marry?" I answer, with regard to the licentious, it is best for a man, to have his wife; and for a woman to have her husband.

nor did they repent of their murders, of their poisoning, of their brutality, nor of their robberys.

now the effects of vicious passions are manifestly these, fornication, uncleanness,

out of the heart proceed evil designs, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimony, slanders. these are the things which defile a man: but to eat without washing one's hands, that does not defile a man.

for from within, from the heart of man proceed wicked designs, adulteries, fornications, murders; thefts, avarice, malice, fraud, impudence, envy, scandal, pride, vanity. all these vices come from within, and are what defile the man.

This I say therefore, and conjure you by the Lord not to live for the future as other Gentiles do, in the vanity of their minds, which are overspread with darkness, and averse to a religious life, thro' their innate ignorance and obduracy: who without remorse, have abandon'd themselves to brutality, in gratifying every lewd unnatural passion.

Marriage is every where honourable, and that state is innocent: but the licentious and adulterers God will punish.
