And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple, and having looked round about upon all things, it being now evening, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year, at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem, after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew it not,read more.
But supposing him to be in the company, they went a day's journey; and sought him among their kinsfolk and among their acquaintance. And not finding him, they went back to Jerusalem, seeking him. And after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished, at his understanding and answers. And seeing him they were amazed. And his mother said to him, Son, why hast thou done thus to us? Behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said to them, Why sought ye me? Knew ye not, that I must be about my Father's business? And they understood not the saying which he spake to them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them; but his mother kept all these things in her heart.
And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on the battlement of the temple, and said, If thou be the son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
well reported of by all the Jews that dwelt there, Coming to me, stood and said to me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him. And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, to know his will, and see that Just one, and hear the voice of his mouth. For thou shalt be his witness to all men, of what thou hast seen and heard.read more.
And now, why tarriest thou? Arise and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. And when I was returned to Jerusalem, and was praying in the temple, I was in a trance, And saw him saying to me, Make haste and depart quickly out of Jerusalem; for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
Our fathers worshiped in this mountain: but ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith to her, Woman, Believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest them who are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a bird gathereth her young under her wings; and ye would not! Behold your house is left unto you desolate. For I say to you, ye shall not see me from this time, till ye say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets and stonest them that are sent to thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together as a bird gathereth her brood under her wings, and ye would not! Behold your house is left to you desolate; and verily I say to you, Ye shall not see me, till the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
And having said these things. he went before, going up to Jerusalem. And as he drew nigh to Bethpage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying, Go ye into the village over against you, in which entering, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man yet sat; loose him and bring him hither.read more.
And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him, thus shall ye say to him, The Lord hath need of him. And they that were sent went, and found even as he had said to them. And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said to them, Why loose ye the colt? And they said, The Lord hath need of him. And they brought him to Jesus, and they cast their garments on the colt and set Jesus thereon. And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. And when he was now come nigh, at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God with a loud voice, for all the mighty works that they had seen, Saying, Blessed be the king that cometh in the name of the Lord: Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
And as they led him away, they laid hold on one Simon a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. And there followed him a great company of people and of women, who also bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning to them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.read more.
For behold the days are coming in which they will say, Happy are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps that never gave suck. Then shall they say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do these things in the green tree, what shall be done in the dry? And there were also led two other men, malefactors, to be put to death with him. And when they were come to the place, called the place of a scull, there they crucified him, and the two malefactors, one on the right-hand, and one on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment and cast lots. And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others: let him save himself, if he be the Christ, the chosen of God. And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. And a superscription also was written over him in Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew letters, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. And one of the malefactors, who were hanging on the cross, reviled him, saying, If thou be the Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering, rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this person hath done nothing amiss. And he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me, when thou comest in thy kingdom. And Jesus said to him, Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in paradise. And it was about the sixth hour; and there was darkness over all the earth till the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And Jesus crying with a loud voice, said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And having said thus, he expired. And the centurion seeing what was done, glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. And all the people who had come together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, returned, smiting their breasts. And all his acquaintance, and the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
And on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices, which they had prepared and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre, And entering, they found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And while they were perplexed concerning it,read more.
behold two men stood by them in shining garments. And as they were afraid, and bowed down their face to the earth, they said to them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen. Remember how he spake to you being yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and rise again the third day. And they remembered his words, And returning from the sepulchre, told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. But Peter rising, ran to the sepulchre; and stooping down, he seeth the linen clothes laid by themselves; and he went home, wondring at what was come to pass.
And having assembled them together, he commanded them, not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard from me. For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost, not many days hence. And when they were come together, they asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?read more.
But he said to them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, the Holy Ghost being come upon you, and shall be witnesses to me, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the earth. And having spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up, and a cloud received him from their sight.
And when the day of Pentecost was come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there was a sound from heaven, as of a rushing, violent wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them distinct tongues, as of fire; and it sat upon each of them.read more.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. And when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together and were confounded, because every man heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how hear we every one, in our own native language? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and dwellers in Mesopotamia, and Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Africk about Cyrene, and Roman sojourners, (Jews and Proselytes) Cretans and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our tongues the wonderful works of God? And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What can this mean? But others mocking, said, They are full of sweet wine. Then Peter standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said to them, Men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known to you, and hearken to my words. These are not drunken as ye suppose for it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel, And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophecy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And in those days I will pour out of my Spirit upon my servants and upon my handmaids, and they shall prophecy. And I will shew prodigies in heaven above, and signs on earth beneath, blood and fire, and vapour of smoke, The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the day of the Lord, the great and illustrious day, come. But whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord, shall be saved.
And at that time there was a great persecution against the church, which was in Jerusalem. And they were all scattered abroad through the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
