And the mariners were afraid and cried every man unto his god, and cast out the goods that were in the ship in to the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah gat him under the hatches and laid him down and slumbered.

All whirry men, and all mariners upon the sea, shall leap out of their boats and set themselves upon the land.

And Hiram sent by ship also of his servants, that were shipmen and expert in the sea, with the servants of Solomon.

Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat, "Let my servants go with thine in the ships." But Jehoshaphat would not.

They that go down to the sea in ships, and occupy their business in great waters,

Sing unto the LORD, a new song of thanksgiving; blow out his praise unto the end of the world. They that be upon the sea, and all that is therein, praise him; the Isles and they that dwell in them.

so that thy wares, thy merchandise, thy riches, thy mariners, thy shipmasters, thy helpers, thy occupiers that brought the things necessary, the men of war that are in thee: Yea, and all thy commons shall perish in the midst of the sea, in the day of thy fall.

They are carried up to the heaven, and down again to the deep; their soul melteth away in the trouble. They reel to and fro, they stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end. So when they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, he delivereth them out of their distress. He maketh the storm to cease, so that the waves are still. Then are they glad, because they are at rest; and so he bringeth them unto the haven where they would be.

which they took up, and used help undergirding the ship, fearing lest we should have fallen into Syrtis, and we let down a vessel and so were carried. When at the last neither sun nor star in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay upon us, all hope that we should be saved, was then taken away. But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were carried in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that there appeared some country unto them, and they sounded, and found it twenty fathoms; And when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found fifteen fathoms. Then fearing, lest they should have fallen on some rock, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day. As the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, and had let down the boat into the sea, under a colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship: Paul said unto the under-captain and the soldiers, "Except these abide in the ship ye cannot be safe." Then the soldiers cut off the rope of the boat, and let it fall away. And in the meantime, betwixt that and day, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, "This is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting receiving nothing at all, wherefore I pray you to take meat: for this no doubt is for your health, for there shall not a hair fall from the head of any of you." And when he had thus spoken he took bread and gave thanks to God in presence of them all, and brake it, and began to eat. Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took meat. We were all together in the ship, two hundred and three score and sixteen souls. And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship and cast out the wheat into the sea. When it was day they knew not the land, but they spied a certain haven with a bank, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship. And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bonds and hoisted up the main sail to the wind and drew to land. But they chanced on a place, which had the sea on both the sides, and thrust in the ship. And the fore part stuck fast, and moved not, but the hinder part brake with the violence of the waves. The soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners: lest any of them, when he had swum out, should flee away. But the under-captain, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose, and commanded that they that could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and escape to land. And the others he commanded to go, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they came all safe to land.

As the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, and had let down the boat into the sea, under a colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship:

And Hiram sent him, by the hand of his servants, ships and servants that could skill of the sea: Which went with the servants of Solomon to Ophir, and brought thence four hundred and fifty talents of gold, and brought it to king Solomon.

And call unto thy god, that God may think on us, that we perish not." And they said, one to another, come and let us cast lots, to know for whose cause we are thus troubled. And they cast lots. Then they said unto him, "Tell us for whose cause we are thus troubled: what is thine occupation, whence comest thou, how is thy country called, and of what nation art thou?" And he answered them, "I am a Hebrew: and the LORD God of heaven which made both sea and dry land, I fear." Then were the men exceedingly afraid and said unto him, "Why didst thou so?" For they knew that he was fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. Then they said unto him, "What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may cease from troubling us?" For the sea wrought, and was troublous. And he answered them, "Take me and cast me in to the sea, and so shall it let you be in rest: for I know it is for my sake, that this great tempest is come upon you." Nevertheless the men assayed with rowing to bring the ship to land: but it would not be, because the sea so wrought and was so troublous against them. Wherefore they cried unto the LORD and said, "O LORD let us not perish for this man's death, neither lay innocent blood unto our charge: for thou LORD, even as thy pleasure was, so thou hast done." And then they took Jonah, and cast him into the sea: and the sea left raging. And the men feared the LORD exceedingly: and sacrificed sacrifice unto the LORD: and vowed vows.

Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the violence of the governor will:

They shall mourn for thee, and say unto thee, 'O thou noble city, that hast been so greatly occupied of old, thou that hast been the strongest upon the sea with thine inhabiters of whom all men stood in fear: How art thou now so utterly destroyed?'

The eldest and wisest at Gebal were they, that mended and stopped thy ships. All ships of the sea with their shipment occupied their merchandise in thee.

for at one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every ship governor, and all they that occupied ships, and shipmen which work in the sea, stood afar off;
