In all their travels, when the column of smoke moved from the tent, the Israelites would break camp. But if the column did not move, they would not break camp.

Jehovah went in front of them in a pillar of cloud to show them the way during the day. He went in front of them in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel at night.

The angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them. The pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them. So it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel. There was the cloud along with the darkness, yet it gave light at night. Thus the one did not come near the other all night.

The column of smoke then covered the tent of meeting. The glory of Jehovah filled the tent.

Moses said to Aaron: Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel: 'Come near before Jehovah for he has heard your complaints.' Aaron was speaking to them, when everyone looked out toward the desert and saw the bright glory of Jehovah in a cloud.

On the morning of the third day there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain. A very loud trumpet sounded. It caused all the people in the camp to tremble.

The congregation came together to confront Moses and Aaron. When they turned toward the tent of meeting, they saw the smoke covering it, and the glory of Jehovah appeared.
