But whenever they persecute you in one town, flee to a different one. For I solemnly say to you, you will not cover all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man returns.

"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace but a sword.

And you, Capernaum, are you to be exalted to heaven? No, you belong to the regions of the dead! For if the wonder-works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have continued until today.

But He answered, "Only a wicked and treacherous age is hankering for a spectacular sign, and no sign will be given it but the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in the whale's stomach for three days and nights, the Son of Man will be three days and nights in the heart of the earth.

He told them another story, as follows: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed seed in his field. But while the world was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed wild wheat seed in the midst of the good seed, and went away. And when the wheat plants grew up and yielded their ripened grain, the wild wheat plants appeared too.read more.
And the farmer's slaves came up to him and said, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Then where did the wild wheat plants come from?' He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' Then they said to him, 'Do you want us, then, to go and gather them?' And he said, 'No, never, for while you are gathering the wild wheat plants you might root up the good ones with them. Let them both grow together until harvest time, and at the harvest time I will order the reapers, "Gather first the wild wheat plants and tie them into bundles to be burned up, but get the wheat into my barn."'" He told them this story, as follows: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it is grown it is the largest of plants; yea, it grows into a tree, so that the wild birds come and roost in its branches." He told another story: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to yeast which a woman took and worked into a bushel of flour until it all had risen." Jesus told the crowds all this in stories, and without a story He told them nothing, to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: "I will open my mouth in stories, I will utter truths concealed since creation." Then He left the crowds and went into His house. And His disciples came up to Him and said, "Explain to us the story of the wild wheat in the field." And He answered: "The sower of the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world; the good seed are the members of the kingdom; the wild wheat seed are the followers of the wicked one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the close of the age, the reapers are angels. Just as the wild wheat plants are gathered and burned up, so it will be at the close of the age. The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all those who cause wrongdoing, and the wrongdoers, and will throw them into the furnace of torturing punishment; there they will wail and grind their teeth. Then the upright will shine out like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let him who has ears listen! "The kingdom of heaven is like a pot of gold which was buried in a field, which a man found and buried again; and for joy over it he went and sold all he had and bought that field. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a gem-dealer who was looking for beautiful pearls. One day he found a very costly pearl, and he went and sold all he had and bought it. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was let down into the sea, and gathered fish of every kind, which, when it was full, the fishermen drew up on the shore, and sat down and picked out the good fish for their baskets and threw the bad away. It was just after that that Jesus Christ for the first time clearly taught His disciples that He had to go to Jerusalem and submit to many forms of suffering at the hands of the elders, high priests, and scribes, and be killed, but be raised to life on the third day.

I solemnly say to you, some of the people standing here will certainly live to see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."

While they were going about in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be turned over into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, but on the third day He will be raised again." And they were crushed with grief.

"Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be turned over to the high priests and the scribes, and they will sentence Him to death, and turn Him over to the heathen to mock and flog and crucify, but on the third day He will rise again."

"Listen to another story. There was once an owner of an estate who planted a vineyard and built a fence around it, and hewed out a wine-vat in it, and built a tower, and rented it to tenant farmers, and then went abroad. But when the time for gathering grapes was near, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his rent. But the tenants took his slaves and beat the first one, killed the second, and stoned the third.read more.
Again he sent other slaves, and more than at first, and they treated them exactly the same way. At last he sent his son to them, for he said to himself, 'They will surely respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is his heir, come on, let us kill him, and get all that is coming to him!' So they took him and drove him out of the vineyard and murdered him. Now when the owner of the estate comes back, what will he do to these tenants?" They answered, "In vengeance he will put the scoundrels to death, and rent the vineyard to other tenants who will promptly pay him the rent." Then Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures: 'That stone which the builders threw away has become the cornerstone; this is the work of the Lord and seems wonderful to us!' "This, I tell you, is why the kingdom will be taken away from you, and given to a people who will pay a fair rent for it. Who ever falls upon that stone will be broken to pieces, but whomever it falls upon will be crushed to powder."

Therefore, I am going to send you prophets, wise men, and scribes, some of whom you will kill -- even crucify -- and some you will flog in your synagogues and chase from city to city, so that on you will come all the righteous blood shed on the earth from the blood of upright Abel to the blood of Zechariah, Barachiah's son, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. I solemnly say to you, all this will come upon this age!read more.
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem! The city that has kept on murdering the prophets, and stoning those who have been sent to her, how often I have yearned to gather your children around me, as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, but you refused! Now your house is abandoned by me! For I tell you, you will never see me again until you say, 'Blessed be He who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

And Jesus left the temple, and was going away, when His disciples came up to Him, to show Him the temple buildings.

Jesus answered, "Look out that no one misleads you about it, for many will come bearing the name of the Messiah, and saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many people.

And this good news of the kingdom must be preached all over the inhabited world, for a testimony to all the heathen, and then the end will come.

"If anyone at that time says to you, 'Here is the Christ!' or 'There He is!' do not believe it, for false Christs and false prophets will announce themselves, and they will show great signs and wonders to mislead, if possible, God's chosen people. Remember, I have told you beforehand.read more.
So if they say to you, 'Here He is in the desert,' do not go out to see. Or 'Here He is in some secret place,' do not believe it.

"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

"You know that in two days the Passover Feast will take place, and the Son of Man will be turned over to be crucified."

I solemnly say to you, all over the world wherever this good news is proclaimed, the good deed that she has done will be told, in memory of her."

And while they were eating, He said, "I solemnly say to you, one of you is going to betray me."

He answered, "The man who has just dipped his hand with me in the dish is the man who is going to betray me. The Son of Man is going away as the Scriptures say of Him, but a curse will be on that man by whom He is betrayed. It would have been better for that man, if he had never been born!" Then Judas, who afterward betrayed Him, answered by asking, "It cannot be I, can it, Rabbi?" Jesus answered him, "Yes, you are the man."

After that He came back to the disciples and said to them: "Still sleeping! Still resting! See! The time has come for the Son of Man to be betrayed into the hands of sinful men! Get up and let us be going. Look! Here comes my betrayer!"

Then He instructed them for the first time that the Son of Man had to endure great suffering and be disowned by the elders and the high priests and the scribes, and be killed but rise again after three days.

And He said to them, "I solemnly say to you, some of the people standing here will certainly live to see the kingdom of God come in its power."

for He was now teaching His disciples, and saying to them, "The Son of Man is to be turned over into men's hands, and they will kill Him, but three days after that He will rise again."

As they were walking along the road up to Jerusalem, Jesus was going on ahead of them, but they were dazed while those who were still following were afraid. Then again He took the Twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to befall Him. "Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be turned over to the high priests and scribes, and they will sentence Him to death, and will turn Him over to the heathen, and they will make sport of Him, and spit on Him, and flog Him, and kill Him, but three days after He will rise again."

Next day, while they were walking over from Bethany, He felt hungry. Now in the distance He saw a fig tree covered with leaves, and He went up to it to see if He might find some figs on it, but when He got to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the time for figs. So He spoke to it and said, "Never again may anyone eat a fig from you!" And His disciples were listening to it.

As He was leaving the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, "Look, Teacher! What stupendous stones, what beautiful buildings!"

Jesus began to say to them: "Look out that no one misleads you about it. Many will come bearing the name of Messiah, and saying, 'I am He,' and they will mislead many.

"If anyone says to you at that time, 'Look! Here is the Christ,' or, 'Look! There He is,' do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will announce themselves, and they will do signs and wonders to mislead, if possible, even God's chosen people. So you must be on your guard. I have warned you about it all beforehand.

She has done all she could; she has beforehand perfumed my body for my burial. I solemnly say to you, all over the world wherever this good news is proclaimed, the deed that she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

And the following signs will attend those who believe: By using my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in foreign languages; they will take snakes in their hands; even if they drink anything poisonous, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well."

as He said, "The Son of Man has to endure great suffering and be disowned by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes, and be put to death but be raised to life on the third day." Then He said to them all, "If anyone chooses to be my disciple, he must say 'No' to self, put the cross on his shoulders daily, and continue to follow me. For whoever chooses to save his lower life will lose his higher life, but whoever gives up his lower life for my sake will save his higher life.

Do you think that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not so at all, but rather discord. For from now on, five in a house will be divided, three against two, and two against three. Father will be against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

"You must struggle on to get in through the narrow door, for I tell you, many will try to get in, but will not succeed, when once the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand on the outside and to knock on the door again and again and say, 'Lord, open it for us'; but He will answer, 'I do not know where you come from.' But I must continue on my way, for it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside Jerusalem.' "O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! The city that continues to murder the prophets, and to stone those who are sent to her, how often I have yearned to gather your children around me, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings. But you refused! Now your house is abandoned to its fate! And I tell you, you will never see me again until you say, 'Blessed be He who comes in the name of the Lord!'"

Now, when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with visible display, and so people will not say, 'Look! Here it is,' nor, 'There it is,' for the kingdom of God is within you." Then He said to His disciples, "The time will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.read more.

Do not start in pursuit of Him, for just as when the lightning flashes, it shines from one end of the sky to the other, so will the Son of Man be when He comes. People continued to eat, drink, marry, and be married, right up to the day when Noah went into the ark, and the Flood came and destroyed them all. It was so in the time of Lot; people continued to eat, drink, buy, sell, plant, and build; and the very day Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. It will be so on the day when the Son of Man appears The man who is on the roof of his house that day, and his goods in the house, must not come down to carry them out; and the man in the field, too, must not turn back. Remember Lot's wife! Whoever tries to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will preserve it. I tell you, two men will be in the same bed that night; one will be taken, the other left. Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things in it, and He said to them, "The Scripture says, 'And my house shall be a house of prayer,' but you have made it a cave for robbers." So He was teaching daily in the temple, and the high priests and the scribes and the leading men of the people were trying to destroy Him, but they could not find, as hard as they tried, what to do with Him, for all the people continued to hang on His words.

So He said, "You must take care not to be misled about it! For many will come bearing the name of Messiah, and saying, 'I am He,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not go after them.

But Jesus turned to the women and said, "Women of Jerusalem, stop weeping for me, but continue to weep for yourselves and for your children. For a time is coming when people will say, 'Happy are the women who are childless, and the women who have never borne and nursed babies!' Then people will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us up!'read more.
For if they do this when the wood is green, what will they do when it is dry?"

Jesus answered them, "Destroy this sanctuary, and I will raise it in three days."

And just as Moses in the desert lifted the serpent on the pole, the Son of Man must be lifted up,

Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

But a time is coming -- indeed, it is already here -- when the real worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and reality, for the Father is looking for just such worshipers.

I most solemnly say to you, a time is coming -- indeed, it is already here -- when the dead will listen to the voice of the Son of God, and those who listen to it will live. For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted to the Son to have life in Himself. He has also granted to Him authority to act as Judge because He is the Son of Man.read more.
Stop being surprised at this, for the time is coming when all that are in the graves will listen to His voice, and those who have done good will come out for a resurrection to life, but those who have done evil for a resurrection to condemnation.

Now the will of Him who sent me is this, that I should lose none of all that He has given me, but should raise them to life on the last day.

Whoever continues to eat my flesh and drink my blood already possesses eternal life, and I will raise him to life on the last day.

Then Jesus said to them, "Just a little while longer I am to be with you, and then I am going back to Him who has sent me. You will then look for me, but you will not find me, and you cannot come where I am going."

Then Jesus again said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, but you will die under the curse of your sins; for where I am going you can never come."

So Jesus said to them, "When you lift the Son of Man (on the cross), you will know that I am the Christ, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but that I say exactly what my Father has instructed me to say.

When Jesus received the message, He said, "This sickness is not to end in death but is to honor God, that the Son of God through it may be honored."

He said this, and after that He added, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him."

Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."

Jesus said to her, "Did I not promise you that if you would believe in me, you should see the glory of God?"

Then Jesus said, "Let her alone; let her keep it for the day of my funeral, for you always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."

Jesus answered them, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified,

And if I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men to me."

Jesus said to them, "Only a little while longer you will have the light. Keep on living by it while you have the light, so that darkness may not overtake you, for whoever walks about in the dark does not know where he is going.

I do not mean all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but I know that the Scriptures must be fulfilled: 'The man who is eating my bread has lifted his heel against me.' From now on I will tell you things before they take place, so that when they do take place, you may believe that I am the Christ. I most solemnly say to you, whoever welcomes any messenger I send welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes Him who has sent me."read more.
After saying this Jesus was deeply moved in spirit and solemnly said, "I most solemnly say to you, one of you is going to betray me." The disciples kept looking at one another, but were at a loss to know which one He meant. One of the disciples, whom Jesus specially loved, was sitting very close to Jesus at His right. So Simon Peter nodded to him to ask Him which one it was that He meant. He leaned back on Jesus' breast and said to Him, "Lord, who is it?" Jesus answered, "It is that one to whom I give the piece of bread when I dip it in the dish." So He dipped it into the dish and took it and gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son. As soon as he took the bread, Satan took possession of Judas. Then Jesus said to him, "Make quick work of what you are to do."

Dear children, I am to be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, but, as I told the Jews, so I now tell you, you cannot just now go where I am going.

Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "I am going where you cannot follow me just now, but you will later follow me." Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow you right now? I will lay down my life for you." Jesus answered, "You will lay down your life for me! I most solemnly say to you, before a cock crows, you will three times disown me!"

And now I have told you this before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe in me.

But I have told you these things that when the time does come, you may remember that I told you. I did not tell you these things at the start, because I was with you.

about uprightness, because I go away to the Father so that you can no longer see me;

"In just a little while you will not see me any longer; and yet, in just a little while after you will see me again."

Listen! A time is coming, yea, it is right here, when you will all be scattered to your homes and will leave me alone. And yet, I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

I most solemnly say to you, when you were young, you used to put on your own belt and go where you pleased, but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will put a belt on you and you will go where you do not please to go." He said this to point out the sort of death by which Peter was to glorify God. So after He had said this, He said to Peter, "Keep on following me!" Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus specially loved, who at the supper leaned back upon Jesus' breast and asked, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?"read more.
So when Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "But, Lord, what about him?" Jesus answered him, "If I wish him to wait until I come, what is that to you? You must keep on following me." So the report got out among the brothers that this disciple was not going to die. But Jesus did not tell him that he was not going to die; He said only, "If I wish him to wait until I come, what is that to you?"
