Yea, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we might not trust in ourselves, but in God, who raiseth the dead:

And he cometh to the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith to Peter, What! Could ye not watch with me one hour?

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God; as it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and abolish the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

Which things (though they have indeed a shew of wisdom, in voluntary worship and humility, and not sparing the body) yet are not of any value, but are to the satisfying of the flesh.

Then said Jesus to him, Put up again thy sword into its place; for all they that take the sword, shall perish by the sword.

Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break thro' and steal:

He that received the seed among the thorns, is he that heareth the word: and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
