'Business' in the Bible
[The] oracle of [the] valley of vision: {What business do you have going} up, all of you, to the roofs,
‘What business do you have here?And whom do you have here,That you have hewn out a tomb here for yourself,You who hew a sepulcher on the height,You who carve a resting place for yourself in the rock?
By whom was this purposed against Tyre, the crowning town, whose traders are chiefs, whose business men are honoured in the land?
And at the end of the 70 years, the Lord will restore Tyre and she will go back into business, prostituting herself with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth.
So will they be to you those with whom you toiled and did business since your childhood they wander about, each in his own direction; there is not one who can save you.
‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and You do not see it?Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not notice?’Hear this [O Israel], on the day of your fast [when you should be grieving for your sins] you find something you desire [to do],And you force your hired servants to work [instead of stopping all work, as the law teaches].
You must observe the Sabbath rather than doing anything you please on my holy day. You must look forward to the Sabbath and treat the Lord's holy day with respect. You must treat it with respect by refraining from your normal activities, and by refraining from your selfish pursuits and from making business deals.
