'Cry' in the Bible
Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say,“Blow the trumpet in the land;Cry aloud and say,‘Assemble yourselves, and let us goInto the fortified cities.’
For I heard a cry as of a woman in labor,The anguish as of one giving birth to her first child,The cry of the daughter of Zion gasping for breath,Stretching out her hands, saying,“Ah, woe is me, for I faint before murderers.”
“As for you, do not pray for this people, and do not lift up cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with Me; for I do not hear you.
Behold, listen! The cry of the daughter of my people from a distant land:“Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King not within her?”“Why have they provoked Me with their graven images, with foreign idols?”
Therefore thus says the Lord, “Behold I am bringing disaster on them which they will not be able to escape; though they will cry to Me, yet I will not listen to them.
Then the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and cry to the gods to whom they burn incense, but they surely will not save them in the time of their disaster.
“Therefore do not pray for this people, nor lift up a cry or prayer for them; for I will not listen when they call to Me because of their disaster.
“Judah mournsAnd her gates languish; They sit on the ground in mourning,And the cry of Jerusalem has ascended.
When they fast, I am not going to listen to their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I am not going to accept them. Rather I am going to make an end of them by the sword, famine and pestilence.”
For each time I speak, I cry aloud;I proclaim violence and destruction,Because for me the word of the Lord has resultedIn reproach and derision all day long.
“Go up to Lebanon and cry out,And lift up your voice in Bashan;Cry out also from Abarim,For all your lovers have been crushed.
“Wail, you shepherds, and cry;And wallow in ashes, you masters of the flock; For the days of your slaughter and your dispersions have come,And you will fall like a choice vessel.
“Hear the sound of the cry of the shepherds,And the wailing of the masters of the flock! For the Lord is destroying their pasture,
‘Why do you cry out over your injury?Your pain is incurable.Because your iniquity is greatAnd your sins are numerous,I have done these things to you.
The nations have heard of your shame,And the earth is full of your cry of distress; For one warrior has stumbled over another,And both of them have fallen down together.
Thus says the Lord:“Behold, waters are going to rise from the northAnd become an overflowing torrent,And overflow the land and all its fullness,The city and those who live in it;And the men will cry out,And every inhabitant of the land will wail.
“Moab is broken,Her little ones have sounded out a cry of distress.
“For by the ascent of LuhithThey will ascend with continual weeping; For at the descent of HoronaimThey have heard the anguished cry of destruction.
“Moab has been put to shame, for it has been shattered.Wail and cry out;Declare by the ArnonThat Moab has been destroyed.
“Therefore I will wail for Moab,Even for all Moab will I cry out;I will moan for the men of Kir-heres.
“Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai has been destroyed!Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah,Gird yourselves with sackcloth and lament,And rush back and forth inside the walls; For Malcam will go into exileTogether with his priests and his princes.
“Raise your battle cry against her on every side! She has given herself up, her pillars have fallen,Her walls have been torn down. For this is the vengeance of the Lord:Take vengeance on her;As she has done to others, so do to her.
The Lord of hosts has sworn by Himself:“Surely I will fill you with a population like locusts,And they will cry out with shouts of victory over you.”
